Gandalf. Always Gandalf.

Although he isn't strictly speaking human (as mentioned before) so I will have to say... erm, I have no idea. I'll just go with the majority then :D

Always had a soft spot for Ridcully in the Discworld series. Maybe it's just me, but I've always gotten the impression that there's more going on there than meets the eye. Not saying he's a brilliant mastermind by any stretch, far from it, but everyone seems to dismiss him as eccentric and bumbling, not to mention all that great of a wizard, but I've always figured there's more there.

Plus he's the only wizard I know that's practical enough to know sometimes all you need is a sturdy crossbow.

I remember Raistlin from the old Dragonlance series as well, I loved those books as a kid. Plus in terms or just outright power he's capable of kicking every other fictional wizards ass from Rand Al Bore to Dumbledore to Gandalf and Merlin. He kills gods. Still have some fond memories of those books, though it's been probably around nine years since I last read em so no clue how well they hold up.

I have a big enough list of undecided between Merlin from the Sword in the Stone, Zedd or Nathan from Sword of Truth, Harry Dresden or Gandalf.

Raistlin Majere, hands down.

The man not only powerful enough to slaughter an entire pantheon, but also wilful enough to abstain from doing so, at the cost of his own life.

Another dresden fan here.
"He's Gandalf on crack and an IV of Red Bull, with a big leather coat and a .44 revolver in his pocket."

(Dude on the dinosaur is dresden.)

Harry Mother Fucking Dresden.

Nobody beats him, ever. Gandalf is all well and cool but Harry bests him at every turn at every turn. And lets face it, being a wizard never got Gandalf laid. Harry on the other hand...
Bullshit, you think all Dumbledore and Grindelwald did was talk during their slumber parties?
I never said anything about Dumbledore not getting laid. I said Gandalf didn't. =p
I wouldn't say anything bad about Dumbledore or Gandalf anyway, because I do love those characters. But in my opinion, I'm biased as he is my favourite ever character, Harry Dresden is the best wizard.

Please.

Gandalf got owned by the Balrog, needed divine intervention for help, and came back so muddled he didn't remember names of his party.

Dresden carries a gun for "when magic doesn't cut it". For a real wizard, magic will always cut it.

Merlin got owned by someone dangling a hot chick in front of him.

Belgarath can't seem to get anything done without first assembling a team of 20.

Gotta go with Milamber/Pug.
He destroyed a planet and an unspeakable terror from beyond by throwing a moon at it. To repeat: Destroyed a Planet.

But of course, even he couldn't kill Rincewind.

Gandalf. Not only can he use awesome magic, he can use a SWORD while doing it too. Most wizards can't use swords, or if they do, they're generally crappy with them.

Oh, and let's not forget his voice has so much authority that he can command a lesser wizard (who was still pretty damn strong) to obey him, and then cause that wizard's staff to break just by saying "Your staff is BROKEN!"

Oh, and he's a damn Chessmaster. What's not to like?

Best wizard in fiction? I didn't know there were non-fictional ones...

Anyway, I'd say Gandalf, for me the archetype that Dumbledore was based on. Kindly old man, but dangerous when necessary.
I would say Odin because he is the archetype Gandalf was based on. that and he is a god. Not a Wizard that has godly powers, A wizard who not only invented magic but IS really a god.

Macross the Black from the Riftwar saga. This guy is an unaging, dimension hopping wizard who is shown to be far more powerful then any number of the other wizards in many dimesions and has a whole castle filled with his research notes and is still going.
BAM! I was going to say Pug, and it's highly debatable as to which is more powerful.

But still, love that line Miranda pulls when she meets him for the first time in the books 'Hello, daddy!'

Merlin.
LOL, yet another Disney cartoon want to watch again...(!) Damn you... sir! =P

OT: No-one for Jaya Ballard? No? Well, she's definitely hot! (pun intended)
I was waiting for someone to drop a Magic character. But why Jaya? Sure she's awesome and has badass quotes, but what about Urza .

Sure he's a bit stock, but sealing away the satanic god of a race of civilization destroying aliens by putting your eyes in a silver robots chest in order to power up a minotaurs axe and send down heavenly rainbows from the sky has to count for something.

Really? What about the best mages in non-fiction?

OT Quick Ben from Malazan Book of the Fallen. He single-handedly took on the empress, the Tiste Andii, outsmarted gods that number beyond reckoning, and he took down a Pure of the Forkul Assasil. He's material incarnate of the title "bad ass."

Okay, my experience with wizards in fiction may not be as extensive as some of the other posters, but here goes.

I have seen people mention Gandalf, Dumbledore, Merlin, Raistlin Majere, and Robillard. These are all wizards I have known of, and all of them have decent arguments for being the best wizard in fiction.

Dumbledore was the most powerful wizard in his world, and only died because he was poisoned and had to be mercy-killed. Robillard took down an immortal lich wizard way more powerful than him while below decks on a sinking ship. Gandalf was a demi-god that killed another demi-god, died of his wounds, and then came back more powerful than he was before (a fact which causes me to laugh at anyone who thinks Dumbledore would be a match for him). Raislin Majere killed an entire pantheon. Merlin is such an iconic wizard that almost all of the greatest wizards in fiction have been based off of him or pay tribute to him in some way.

But how, how in the hell, has it been this long before anyone has mentioned Negi fucking Springfield? Does no one on the Escapist know who I am talking about? Anyone who has read up to the fight against Jack Rakan will know exactly what I'm talking about. Here is a kid who went from being a weak, fresh out of the academy, child wizard who could barely handle a dodgeball match between some obnoxious girls to being an incredibly competent warrior spellcaster capable of going toe-to-toe with someone who ripped a dragon deity in half with his bare hands. And he earned every drop of his power through hard work, training, intelligence, and innovative magical theory. He was able to ensoul a robot by kissing it really, really hard. (That's not really important, but I think it is too hilariously awesome not to mention.) And did I mention, this super-mage is only 11 years old?

I mean no disrespect to any of the other wizards mentioned here, I don't even know anything about Harry Dresden or Rincewind, and I've only heard a little of the accomplishments of Zedd or Ged. But I have mentioned the accomplishments of the wizards I do know, and I can say with confidence that at this point in his story, with his incredible speed, power, and combat prowess Negi Springfield would almost certainly (barring a surprise attack, maybe,) crush any of the wizards I mentioned before they had time to speak (or possibly even think) the first word of a spell (although I will admit getting Gandalf to stay dead may pose a bit of a problem for him).

The fact that it has been this long before Negi Springfield got so much as an honorable mention is a tragedy.
