(Yes, there is girl with a name like that in BG2 as well!)
Where else is there a girl with that name?
Well, Aeris/Aerith from FFVII has a quite similar name and is frequently mentioned on most desirable gaming romantic interest lists:)

And both are similar in being vulnerable magic users best suited for healing. The problem I had with Aerie is
that she is FAR too immature and self-pitying, to the point of "Ooh I really really love you and I want to sleep you"---"but if I do I will regret it and think we are going too fast and never ever speak with you again at least until the expansion where I might want to get it on if you didn't do WHAT *I* ASKED FOR when I asked the first time and then I will become pregnant on the first try and go through the entire thing in two weeks and have a baby that will take up one inventory slot and which I will assure you won't be hurt by the final battle because of being wrapped up in my magic cloak while I fight"
Actually, hers might be one of my least favorite romances ever now that I think about it.:)
I've never played a FF game, so I'm not surprised I didn't know about her.

While she was a little whiny, I kinda liked Aerie anyway. Although everyone I talk to seems to hate her, she wasn't that bad...
Or maybe I'm just masochistic?

naturally, but Shepard isn't very much for talking. Everyone seems to hate the female voice too. I frickin' loved it. Sooo sexy... *shivers*
You are SO right there. Jennifer Hale's work on Shepard is THE best voice acting I've heard in any game, period. She nails every nuance of it and makes the male version sound pretty "meh" in comparison.
The only bad part of the romances in Mass Effect was that they were too short. Four or five longer dialogues and no real in-between banter? Could and should have been much more.

Worst one I can think of is in Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy between Lucas and Carla. Come on he's dead which technically makes him a zombie!

Everyone seems to be hitting on FF, but I'd have to say Balthier and Fran from XII are the best. Period.

Anyone who played the game *had* to hear those innuedos. And seriously, it's a runaway noble and a bunny girl, what's not to like?

I'd go Shepard and Ashley in Mass Effect, or Max and Mona Sax in Max Payne for best ones.

This is a hard question since games tend to muck up love stories with unprecedented accuracy. For some reason, the love story in Indigo Prophecy sticks out in my mind. It's been awhile since I played it, but the story's setting, coupled with the events that play out and the possible endings just make everything seem happy and satisfying.

Braid's love story was cryptically interesting.

I think, by far, Shadow of the Colossus has one of the better love stories. In some regards, Ico as well.

As far as the worst love story...Ryu's love interest in the first Shenmue. Oh, how I love thee, Shenmue, but that was one of the most painful cinematics to ever take place in a nighttime park setting.

wow i leave this one night and how much hate is there?
yeah i see a lot of final fantasy hate going round
yahtzee would say that there is no feeling for the characters, they are just labelled "hero" or "love interest" or "comic relief character".
actually in ff8, at least you can see how squall begins to fall in love with rinoa, but unfortunately its still not actually a surprise :(

Overlord + His Minions/Gnarl for the best love story.
"Giblet, wake up, there's forging to be done! Heehee"

Worst I'd have to agree with Masterchef and Cortana.
Or possibly Alyx/Gordan Freeman even though it's not truly existent seeing as Gordon's MUTE!
well the only Love i can see is the love of paste sized Minions

Planescape Torment had a good love story between The Nameless One and Annah. the fact that it was doomed from the start made it better.

Mass effect, and Jade empire I think both did a really good job ( though I still think all games allowing a player initiated romance should make you work a little harder at it)
kotor 1, and even 2 had a interesting thing... I just cant get into the FF, or devil may cry, lost odyssey or other ones, as the delivery was so bland..

In my opinion the best would be The Darkness. I mean, even I got attached to Jenny. It's totally justfied, and not overdone at all. And the scene where you know what happens... very atmospheric and lifelike
(if you don't count the darkness thing. imo that shouldn't have been in to begin with, it would have been an excellent maffia story without this whole demon bullshit but i guess the Xbox kiddies wouldn't have bought that)

Yes!

This!

Annah was sexy as sin, I tells ya! She's a nibbler. I find nibbling very sexy.

Also, tails always make women hotter. This is truth. And she's a redhead. And Irish. You know? I should play that game again...

I personally loved Max Payn and Mona Sax's relationship. I played that game on the hardest difficulty, fighting through the fucking levels, constantly dying...why?

So I can get the happy ending where Mona lives!

I cheered when I got that, "YES!" I shouted. "NOW MARRY HER AND HAVE MANY FAT CHILDREN!"

But the makers of Max Payn 3 (if they make one) will not listen to me, for they are doubtlessly assholes.
