You guys think that Oblivion's combat was bad, go play Morrowind.

Oblivion's combat was INFINITELY better than Morrowinds.

I was a huge Morrowind fan at the time, so when I played Oblivion I saw the combat as a drastic improvement.

I still don't really have many qualms with it.

Yea, they improved the combat but everything else got worse. (except for the graphics that is)
What else was worse? I mean, I know the world of Cyrrodil wasn't as cool as Morrowind's was, but I think they definitely did a good job at portraying the difference between the imperial world vs the Dunmer world.

Oblivion was so much more generic overall compared to Morrowind. It didn't have retarded ass level scaling , MW had better writing, more depth, less hand holding, you know, the same things that have been stated over and over again..
It DID have level scaling, whether or not it was 'retarded ass' I guess is a matter of opinion. I'll agree MW had better writing, depth and less hand holding.

But I can't help but wonder if part of what contributed to the "generic-ness" of the world is largely caused by the fact that Cyrrodil was the Imperial-centric nation, and the Imperials, out of all the races from the Elder Scrolls are the most generic. That is, what one person might criticize as "generic medieval scenery" is actually just Bethesda keeping continuity with the Imperial style they set in Morrowind.

It's just a shame the graphics have aged so badly and the run speed at the start of the game makes you want to punch somthing. :<
you know they have some pretty big graphical overhaul mods for Morrowind like... Morrowind 2011

And Oblivions level scaling was the WORST compared to their other games.
I thought Morrowind 2011 was plaguerised from loads of seperate mod developers so they were forced to scrap it. I agree about the level scaling in oblivion. I'm not saying Morrowind is a bad game but It does have it's down sides.

I didn't really mind Oblivion's combat, mostly cause I loved spawning random monsters to fight things. The melee combat, while not terribly varied, functioned well enough for me

Fallout 3 is one of my most favorite games of all time, and I thought the combat was good, but again, not amazing

I don't play those types of games for the combat, I play for the epic environments and freedom to do what I want, not every game with combat needs it to be perfect

Combat and wandering the wasteland are the only things in Bethesda RPGs... and they both suck. Why do people like these games gain?

Wandering the wasteland is actually pretty good. IMO, that's Bethesada games' main selling point - huge worlds to explore.

well if you want that much realism then mod the game after you get it. in reality a single sword slice or a single swing of a mace against your knee is enough to bring you down and take you out of the fight. If the combat was that realistic then we ourselves might as well run around and fight each other with swords. My point is that beyond a certain point with realism you cross awesomeness and it becomes annoying that every-time you fight a single hit in the right place can bring you down. Annoying enough to make you want to stop paying the game cause you get you ass kicked every time. Bottom line is this; in an rpg game the combat is not the main focus. sure we all like a kick ass combat system that is better then oblivions, that has finishing moves, decaps, and insta stealth kills, but the whole point of rpg is to "live another life in another in another world" and bethesda games do just that, so they live up to what they are supposed to be. If you don't personally like something in an rpg game like this then do one of two things.
1. don't play the game
2. mod it

I played Oblivion for over 100 hours and loved it, but the melee combat was no good.

You guys mostly seem like PC folk, but a game with the best melee i've encountered in an RPG is Demon's Souls. The weight of your weapons and armor + the stamina bar brings SOOO much depth to every single battle. Basically you have a stamina bar that deplets as you swing (Around 5-6 swings) and block attacks. When it deplets, your character can barely hold his shield up to block until it regenrates to a minimum level. It regenrates when blocking but MUCH faster when your in a neutral stance (weapons down).

Hope that makes sense. I think it works really well.
