There was day one patch with Generations, Batman: AA, and MW3...

What's the problem and how is it shocking?

What's wrong with a day 1 patch? With the amount of time it takes to burn the number of DVDs and blu-ray discs for every copy of the game, package them, send them to a distributor, and then get them shipped to the individual stores by release day, it stands to reason what was in about three weeks ago is what is on the disk. I would call it a good thing that the quality control process didn't stop there.

Particularly given the track record of the stability of the Fallout installments they have released.
Exactly. Why do people complain about good customer after care?

Would they prefer it to ship with bugs that were never fixed?

Would they prefer it to be delayed?

There could well be a patch after this day 1 patch...

So, everyone, I'm not quite sure how to create a forum thread, but..
In the Netherlands, people can already buy and play Skyrim, I've seen a copy of it myself.
I pre-ordered from the UK so, I'm gonna have to wait.

WHAT?!?

You mean I may be forced to sit through a two minute download and install process one day out of the blue just to improve overall gameplay performance?!? How dare they interrupt the normal use and access of a product I have paid money for just to add benefits I won't notice because they will no longer be broken. They don't have the right! They should have released a 100% product on release day since any competent game studio has the ability to find all of the bugs that millions of players carrying out millions of random unforseen actions will find in normal play, I mean, It's NORMAL PLAY. Now they want to delay my bought and paid for gaming because they dropped the ball?? I want to play NOW and any delay us unacceptable!!

Well considering most games have a day one patch because of the time it takes to make all the discs and ship them off to stores all over the world what do you think the development team is doing between that time and release date having a big paper fight no they are still testing the game especially a big open world game like skyrim you could probabley test that for 2 years and still be finding bugs

Is the patch a bad things; not really shows that there's been some effort to fix the bugs before the game comes out(The version that ships is probably a few weeks seeing as it takes around that to ship it out in time for a release day).
You know what shows MORE effort to fix the bugs before the game comes out? Releasing games that don't require day 1 patches.

A day 1 patch shows less effort, not more.

Most bethesda bugs people talk about are of the 'this engine is shit' or 'wtf save fail' variety, which have nothing to do with the size of the game world.

Also, there was a time when game companies could press their discs and get them manufactured without bugginess requiring patches. That process hasn't changed in the past 15 years, when optical discs made that fast and cheap. You might have a point here if we're still dealing with cartridges. Funny thing tho: Game companies that make things on cartridge generally get things right.

I fail to see what the problem is.

The game discs have already been produced. It's already waiting to be shipped. They can't go back and retroactively fix hundreds of thousands of already printed discs, so a day-one patch is a pretty good way to go in this case (it's also the only way). And even if, as you say, they will be fixing "the whole game", is it really a bad thing that they're doing this on literally the first day? Would you rather the game go unpatched? As I see it, a day one patch is just a patch. It also means they found bugs in the game--which means they were testing it/playing it up until release--and are fixing them.

I also like how OP jumps at "substantial DLC = horse armor," completely ignoring literally every other piece of DLC. Shivering Isles, KotN, the Warriors Fortress or whatever that castle thing was (which was actually quite a good bit of DLC), and so on. Maybe not spell tomes, though, but those were nice additions to the game, I admit. Also, DLC is not inherently evil unless the game is a pittance of an experience and the DLC provides just as much/more gameplay. TES games have never, ever suffered from that particular problem.

The sad part is that I could totally see something like that happening with all seriousness on the internet.

Well at least their now admitting it. All we have to do now is rage untill they start bug hunting before release. So does this mean that the ps3 will be getting some dlc this time as that was one thing that annoyed me on oblivion.

You realize that was a joke right? Or do people not make jokes about Horse Armor anymore?

Also, for everyone who seems to think this is a bash against day one patches see the last part where the question is asked. Lots of posts about Skyrim have people mentioning that they're going to hold off on purchase until they get a grip on the bugs and glitches that Bethesda games are known for.

Damn people, take your chill pills.

The goal overall is not necessarily to put out more content, but to make the game better.
DLC instead of patches?

ffs. Make a good game first and worry about monetizing it later.

If only.

I am from The Netherlands and had it pre-ordered. Skyrim is shipped with steam. The only thing I could do was register it to my steam account before I got the message "This game could not be installed".

Guess I'll have to wait, with the case taunting me, untill Friday

Have you played any last gen games? Or games that don't get patched?

Guess what they all have in common?

Loads of bugs

Just because the devs didn't provide a patch doesn't mean there aint something that needs patching. However it can be said that many games are released in a sloppy condition; this does usaully tend to be due to the publisher and tight release dates though.

I think I can accept that. Maybe. Somehow. As long as there be dragons to kill and stuff to loot.
