Some great points being made by people here. I must admit I'm more of a single player or two player co-op man myself (it's what I grew up on in the C64 days) and rarely does a game make me venture from my cave into the wild world of online, so maybe I'm a bit naive and this is just symptomatic of the online community as a whole.

That said when Halo 3 first came out I never had any problems and often partnered up with people; now not a game goes by without me and my friends having to "avoid" players purely because they're jack-offs (for all the reasons people have listed prior).

Its stories like this that make me wonder why anyone puts up with online gaming, everytime I have ever tried it, I was always in a game with at least 2 cheaters.

Oh man I hate that! Seems I'm not the only one. That happened to me on Avalanche; I flew the Mongoose over the man-cannon, through the window, grabbed the flag, rocketed back, walked the whole map, dropped the flag periodically to shoot down some enemies only to be betrayed as I was about to walk into our base. The dude took the flag and ran it up the spire to score while I lay there waiting to respawn!
Yeah I had a similar issue in Warhawk Badlands Map. I wasn't the one who grabbed the flag out of the enemy base but I was heading to escort him when he died before I got there so I recovered the flag an headed back to base when the enemy stole it right before I got to the capture point. Luckily he didn't get far so it was just a matter of not geting killed to get points for saving the flag and capturing the enemies flag at the same time with 2 other soldiers (only i would have gotten capute points of course)then a 3rd drops down from the ledge wielding a knife my 1st reaction was "crap it's an ambu... oh cool it's a teammate just a few more seconds an...." TEAMKILL in less than a second he gains the flag an turns it in robbing me both points from saving an capturing but I'd have to say the worst part was that the others didn't even seem fazed by the teamkill.

Then in a different game I snuck into the enemy base and grabed the flag an drove out like a bat out of hell I don't know what the other team was doing at the time but I didn't care. I was doing fine until halfway down the map I see an Allied tank ahead again I think sweet that'll slow down anyone persuing me when BANG a Tank shell hit's me head-on thankfully jeeps can take a lil more than one cannon shot but then I thought he mistook me for the enemy an won't fire again an a few seconds from being outa sight of him an geting a repair icon WHAM teamkill again .... the next few minutes we're spent in futility with the flag respawning to thier base from the edge of ours.

I remember playing online a whole generation ago, on the Xbox, and the experience was a lot more pleasant. Playing Rainbow Six untill the wee hours in the morning and you'd have a laugh and get on with whoever you played with. Nowadays, it's almost impossible to play online without some idiot hurling abuse at you because you made a mistake. I apologise for not being flawless 100% of the time.
I'm sure it's all down to the ease of set-up and use of online for consoles nowadays that's degraded the experience. Or maybe kids didn't play Xbox back then, maybe they were all still playing their PS2s...... either way, I rarely play a game online now.

A agree with this. I was actually gonna start a topic on this sort of thing, but I got lazy. Plus I figured "meh, it's probably been done to death".

I really think it has a lot to do with the fact that nowadays, kids really don't appreciate what they got cause they never played the stuff that led up to it. I mean, I remember when I was a kid growing up playing the NES back when it was THE system to get. But back then, when my friends weren't around playing, I'd think "Man, how cool would it be to be able to play with people from their houses."

Then technology got better, we started being able to talk over computers more easily, we started finding games that we could play over the computers with each other, and even though there was no voice communication at the time, it was a good time.

So now that we've finally reached this place where you can just turn the console/PC on and "bang" you're connected to your friends just like that, I appreciate it, and thus don't treat it as an excuse to act like a douchebag to strangers. When I was invisioning it as a kid, I always imagined people meeting each other, having laughs, saying "hey good game", and talking tactics when playing as teams.

Unfortunately too many people use it just to satisfy their inner asshole and feed a part of their ego. They use it to display a racist or sexist side that they wouldn't show if you were in person. I too prefer to play with friends, or at least people who are generally having fun and joking around or whatever. You know, people with more humor and less pride.

I'm glad the technology's there now, but it sucks how a lot people choose to use it. But hey, that's humanity for ya.
That's exactly it. I probably can't claim to be as old as some people and here and my age which I'm about to say, may just put some people at the point of skipping over what I have to say, but listen. I'm 16 I grew up playing a super nintendo and some NES (Took us to our 3rd and 1 would work sometimes) and at most I could play with my one friend sitting next to me. And I had the same dream of one day playing without having to call my friends house, getting one of our parents to drive us to the others house and lugging over about 6 games (Cartridges were cool but bulky) to his house to play that he didn't have. Obviously computer gaming solved this. It mostly solved it for me with me starting out Half-life online and it was great just having to call my friend tell him I'm going online and what server and he'd meet me and we'd play together. To get more recent it is also something I love to do in Battlefield (2142 a lot since I stopped 2) and all I did was come home read my e-mails or send him an IM and then go online to play together. But consoles get rid of that, no servers, no choosing who you want to play with, unless you get a choice to party up with your friends, and no respect from people who think they're better than everyone else. If I try to leave I get a message calling me a 'pussy' or something like that. But back then and still today, on my PC I can play a quality game in a fun server without worrying about playing with someone I don't want to play with. (And yes I know I could just not play on consoles, but some people I've met are really cool but don't play on PC's or some of my friends don't have their own computer to install games on, they just have a family computer they have to share)

This brings up another issue I want get other peoples thoughts on. With the recent release of Battlefield Bad Company (Yesterday for me). Would you worry about Halo assholes playing cause its another fps and being complete douche bags and ruining the tactical and complete team co-operation of a game like Battlefield. And since it's console you lose the choice of servers. What do other people think about these things? That's what I REALLY want to hear from people who respect the ability to game online.

I had one guy from the get go follow me around and occasionally melee me in the back of the head (not an insta-kill in H3, although it should be).
um, yeah it is.

It's called an assassination, and will kill you even if you've used the "invincibility" powerup, even if you're on full overshield.

if they're the type of people who shoot you & take you shield down, commit suicide, it'll count as their betrayal, they you boot 'em.

I know a couple of people who play Halo and are interested in Battlefield. But they're not the kind of people that anyone complains about. I'm thinking of checking the game out myself. I'm not too worried about the halo-tards (and I'm only using that term to describe annoying Halo players, not all Halo players in general) moving over to Battlefield, they seem pretty content with what they're doing.

Whenever I run into one of those annoying types, I usually glance at their gamer card and most of the time, Halo is the only thing they play. It's not a rule, but it's a common trait I find, whereas the more mellow people seem to enjoy branching out to other FPS's, and genres.

That's not to say that there aren't idiots in every other multiplayer game too, but as for the topic of Halo players crossing over, I don't think it's that big a problem.

Oh, I have a great story on this subject, where someone betraying me led to the most enjoyable game of Halo 3 I have ever played.

Now, it was Neutral Assault on Standoff with 8 players a side. It was becoming pretty apparent that we were the superior team, and that it would only be a matter of time before we scored a couple of times and won. Our first detonation attempt was foiled at the last moment, so we had to prepare for a second attempt.

I spotted two players on our team, one of which was a guest for the other. One was holding the bomb and sitting on the back of a mongoose, while the other seemed to be trying to drive. The driver jumped off, so I decided that since he didn't want to try, I'd have a go. Jumping into the driver's seat, the original driver took this as an insult and immediately melee attacked me, dropping my shields. Trying to get away from this asshole, I floored the accelerator and tried to get away. The paasenger jumped off, and the driver followed up the melee attack with a neat headshot from the battle rifle.

Of course, I was very annoyed. One of my pet peeves is people who go on social games with a guest and consider it their God given right to be in the same vehicle, and will kill anyone who gets in the way. When given the option to boot, I gladly accepted seeing as how this meant one of them must have betrayed earlier. Goodbye idiots, hello team of 6 versus team of 8. Now, the game lasted about another 20 minutes, with neither team scoring once. It was the most action packed game I've ever played, with desperate last stands, holding actions and mongoose explosions.

In short, thanks to two idiots betraying me, I thouroughly enjoyed myself.

Sometimes people almost try to get themselves betrayed. I was aiming straight up with a Spartan Laser, and it would have been impossible not to see the red glow meaning it was charging. Someone jumps over me as I fire, and boots me for it.

It was getting pretty bad for a while. I really don't like it because it's either people that just have no regard for the game and are just there to F things up or it's people that are actually good doing it on purpose to delevel themselves so that they don't have to play on a harder level in matchmaking and can continue to own the games. It's pathetic either way.

What's worse is when you are attempting to snipe, and your team shoots you. Not enough to kill you, but enough to lower your shields to 0. It is made even more annoying because you can't even stay zoomed in while taking damage.

Yeah that is one of my pet hates too. It's cost me a few kills.

I really don't get why people do that; if you are going to attempt to kill me atleast make a decent effort of it.
