I was commenting mainly on the post, not the thread. I just mentioned that I haven't seen it so people wouldn't jump to assume I was defending her when I really have no idea if she's right or wrong. And really, I don't care enough about the movie to watch it just so I can discuss its possible sexist implications online.

Yeah, cause someone who's a part of the Big Bang Theory really has grounds to complain when a piece of fiction stereotypes.

My man just went in!

Not going to lie, I was kind of thinking the same thing. The show pretty much lives off of the nerds-are-weird stereotype.

Yeah, just gonna have to say I disagree with her. It's about subverting the whole "Princess seeks prince" trope by setting it up that way, but the most important relationship revolves around the sisters. Pretty straightforward really, not sure where she's coming from.

BUT! I can sort of agree about the figures of the women. The bizarre trend of women in these movies being significantly smaller/thinner than men is just odd. Yes women tend to have smaller frames, but it's like broomsticks standing next to brick walls. No surprise young women tend to have a lot of body image issues when that's constantly the idealized image we present.

Oh hey look at that, I just disagreed with someone about whether or not something might be sexist in a way that didn't involve insults or threats. Didn't even have to resort to talking about agendas or conspiracies! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

So, the film all about inverting standard Disney princess mythology, concerning two sisters learning to accept themselves and make their own choices, is sexist.

Yeah.....ok.

I find it even more hilarious that she's making such an idiotic claim while portraying a character on a show that routinely mocks intelligent people.

And for the record: Sometimes the best way to subvert a trope is to use the trope. You use the trope to lull the viewers into expecting certain outcomes then bring in something from far out of left field. Sometimes the shock of the unexpected can give stronger emphasis to the message you're actually trying to send.

A thread mentioning sexism and The Big Bang Theory? Two of the Escapist's big trigger points, how is this not 500 pages?

Worse, she seems to have largely missed the point of the movie, meaning this would be a great argument to pounce on. I mean, where are all the critics of feminism? Tired from making up things about Sarkeesian?

big bang theory is worse.... the very show she works on!

Frozen was a sing-fest, boring.

Tangled was much more enjoyable.

Didn't the Nostalgia Chick talk about something like this?

The Frozen Thing [http://chezapocalypse.com/thefrozenthing/]

Yes; THEN WHY ARE WE STILL HAVING THIS DISCUSSION?

I know i'm the type of person that normally promotes overanalysis of media but this is stupid, stupid

Before I get a yellow card from the Escapist, I'd like to just get this out.
Was there some massive "Women of Earth" meeting to suddenly start stating that everything was sexist? I mean seriously, 10 years ago no one gave a damn about sexism or political correctness, but nowadays it's just getting worse and worse. Now you can't hold a door open without someone complaining that you're being sexist because obviously I believe she can't open a door herself. You offer to let her go into a room first and you're obviously just trying to look at her ass. There's a reason people ***** that chivalry is dead, but it wasn't killed because the chivalrous stopped being so, it died because suddenly all gentlemanly acts are now sexist and wrong and should be punished with a mandatory trip to the gulags. I'm willing to wager that a large portion of the men on this site were raised to respect women and be gentlemen, yet now those acts are seen as "keeping the feminine half down." Seriously, this shit needs to stop. It's not funny anymore and it's now bordering on the annoying.

Wait what? Frozen was mainly about the relationship of two sisters. And Anna was not trying to find a husband. She just had this fantasy of true love in her head and thought the first "nice" guy she met was her destined partner. Near the end this fantasy is proven false. If anything Frozen breaks the mold when it comes to that cliché.
I have heard articles that presented Frozen as sexist towards females and it was facepalm material. I have heard articles that presented Frozen as presentation of worst of feminist ideals and it was better written facepalm material.

My opinion
Meh, now I really don't want to watch the movie...

There fixed that for you. Do I need to go on?

OT:

Oh, Big Bang Theory, because your portrayal of female characters is so much more enlightened.
Haven't seen Frozen, so I can't comment on that.

There is a HUGE difference between preventing promotion of violence towards people and prescribing the only correct way to represent someone or something.

BTW, it's perfectly within one's right to hold discriminatory speeches. Socially unacceptable but perfectly legal as long as one does not call for violence or other transgressions of the law.

Jeez, Blossom... Way to miss the point of subversion right there...

But, whatever... It's just your opinion after all... For me, the subversion was fine, although I did feel like it could have been better if it wasn't for the movie filled to the gills with songs both great and "seriously?"...

Why, yes. Yes there is. Glad we agree on that. And you bring this up because...?

Well, thank you for that. I can officially say that for the first time in ages big bang theory has made me laugh.

Look, I ain't the biggest fan of frozen, hell, I ain't even watched it due to my annoyance towards 99% of disney musicals, but the thought of big bang theory, a show with more stereotypes than a BNP election advert and a lead female character whose only purposes appear to be to not understand the male character's "nerd" dialogue and to be a conventionally attractive goal for the lead male, calling something else out for sexism or, fuck it, any other "ism", is just hilarious to me.
