dwarf planets are not really planets, the same way a jellyfish is not really a fish. It's one step up from moon, and one step below planet. For a planet to be a planet, it must have its own course of trajectory around a star, unaffected by any other planet's gravity. Therefore, the planet-hopeful must be pretty big and pretty far away. Pluto is small, and is affected by Neptune's gravity, actually intersecting on their trajectories. Neptune still counts as a planet since it stays in its normal trajectory; only pluto changes course.
Every body in the solar system has a non-circular orbit and is affected by the gravity of every other body. Only to smaller degrees. So what tolerances do you hold as the standard for determining the difference between "affected by other bodies" and "not affected by other bodies"?

Why isn't it an "irregular orbit planet", or a "rogue planet".

And what about those other little ones that aren't affected by the gravity of other bodies? I forget their names. Shouldn't those be planets?
no, look at a map of the 'roads' that the planets take. I never once said a planet has a circular orbit, if you will look closely at my argument. I know all planets in the milky way have an elliptical orbit. I have no idea about rogue planets, i'm only quoting the scientific definition that was given when pluto was classified as a dwarf planet.

Grammatically it should be a planet but because of it's odd orbit and size....it's just not good enough.

Gaea isn't a perfect shape either guys, contrary to what you may see in photos and pictures, our planet is actually shaped like an egg.
Plus, the main reason Pluto's orbit is whacked out, is because it was probably only pulled in by Sol recently.

Pluto was already on The magic schoolbus space game as a planet, so it's too late to turn back now.

Q.E.D it's a planet.
You sir, just won 100,000,000 nostalgia points!

See, I think that 8 is a good number for mainstream science. I mean, yes, if you want to be technical, there can be 11 planets, or 13, or 21, or whatever we finally discover there are orbiting the sun. The science is never complete, but we like to teach things that are concrete. Pluto was not concrete in a taxonomical sense.

Am I the only one who thought this thread would contain some wacky theory on how the increase of big breasted women around the globe changed the perspective on the size of spherical things, thus making Pluto seem smaller than before... and demoting it?

As I understand it, a decade ago there were 9 planets in our solar system. A few years ago an international astronomical society not only demoted Pluto to be a dwarf planet but re-classified 2 other bodies as dwarf planets. Now, they say there are 8 planets in our solar system.

From a philosophical and English rules perspective, this makes no sense. If I were to say there are 6 billion people on earth; 3 billion are men, 3 billion are women and 1 billion are big-breasted women, that would make no sense. Big-breasted women are not a different category from women; they are a subset. So too it is with any adjective-noun syntax, including planets.

The number of planets in our solar system should have gone up from 9 to 11; with 4 being inner planets, 4 being gas giants (or outer planets) and 3 of the 11 being dwarf planets. Why is it that dwarf planets are not considered to be a subset of planets?

[sub]Maybe I should of used another analogy, but this one was funniest.[/sub]

I was reading that and, couldn't fat people also wear the shirt? Not to be a dick or anything, but...they would see that as something depressing.

Size does matter indeed. Poor Pluto.. pedobear will be all over her now that she's out of the big-breasted women league. Or is she suppose to be in the big-breasted subset?

The biggest issue is that it has not cleared the neighboring space with it's gravitational well. Ever since scientists decided upon a few requirements on what is defined as a planet, Pluto fell short of the list.

I think one of the reasons why pluto isnt considered a planet is because it's orbit is somewhat irregular. Certain parts of it's orbit bring it closer to the sun than neptune, meaning that at least part of the pluto year is spent as the eighth farthest from the sun as opposed to the ninth.

Don't ask me why that makes it "not a planet", I don't really get it either.
Because it was most likely an object trapped in the gravitational pull of the sun, and not formed from the sun like the other ones. It shouldn't have been classified as a planet in the first place is the thing, as others have said, large asteroids would be planets too given the same reasoning.

That's what my head says.
My heart is with pluto being a real planet on the inside *sniff*
Also, can't believe no one's mentioned "I'm your moon" by jonathan coulton yet. Nerd fail guys...

Well, being an American, I vote to somehow turn pluto into a weapon to use against Terrorists.
Perhaps launch it via space catapult?

Nice way of getting people to read your thread.

Anyway, It's because Pluto is freakin' tiny. It's only approximately a fifth the mass of the Earth's Moon and a third its volume.

They need some standard that says at what size an object becomes a planet.

I think Pluto was not dubbed a planet due to size, and something about its trajectory being affected by Neptune.

That's all I know.

science works like our schooling system: every few years they change something for the hell of it to make an impact and hopefully be remembered by future generations, though they always manage to fuck it up and we remember is that some idiot decided gym wasn't a school class anymore.

same here.
scientists got bored and wanted to do some "changes" for no adequately explained reason. they're just attention whores.

i ignore them when they do these things and still say there are 9 planets in the solar system.i recommend you do too.that always makes them cry.
