I've noticed a lot of posts from people thinking that this is about them monitoring your hard drive online well it's not this is about them having the right to search your hard drive without having any cause to, a good example is travelling etc.. I know that a program would be stupidly hard to develop that searches your hard drive online or whatever, but this is more about the fact that they should't be able to look at your personal things and information without having any reason to.
That's even dumber. Not only would this still be easy to avoid it would just waste massive amounts of time for people who are traveling.

I doubt that it'll go through. It really is a major breach of privacy and would leave the population feel violated.

Here's the plan: Write a program that looks a lot like something that could be used to pirate music or something. The second that they open it, it installs a rootkit on their system, and then writes over their MBR. That'll show the bastards.

And by the Obama legislation you mean one senator out of California?

Relax people. This isn't happening.
Agreed...this is pretty well bullshit to the highest degree...Obama has some whacked out policies, but there are some that just won't happen. This is one of them.

What is seen, cannot be unseen.

I rest my case in the defense of my HDD will remain intact, even against crazies.

Thank you. That's the one thing that actually made me roll my eyes at the OP.

It's not the Obama administration - it's a few Senators. Two very distinct branches of government there.

If you've got nothing to hide you shouldn't be worried, also hooray for being Australian! Since this doesn't affect me I say go for it and see what they find.

Privacy + Patriot act (that you fuckers actually voted for) = No privacy.
Hey! I'm too young to vote, and my parents were against it. Oh well, I've given up on the U.S. actually following it's own Constitution.

Invasion of privacy that probably won't happen. If this does go through, well... I guess it's the Obama version of the Patriot Act (man, what a misnomer! I guess true "Patriots" don't support the rights that our forefathers fought for, like the Right to Privacy.)

Hopefully these few morons won't get this legislation passed. I see it as a transparent attempt by big media outlets to crack down on piracy, thus ensuring more profits for themselves. I mean, it IS coming from California, which is a big mass media center for America. Lots of Hollywood types over there that are strongly anti-piracy.

It's a breach of privacy. The Privacy Act put forward by Bush and other laws put forward much longer ago and the Constutional Rights would protect us against this. It wouldn't hold up in the US Supreme Court which holds power over the President to an extent. He'd be forced to back down on the situation. I won't worry about it until it makes its way to the Courts.

This kind of reminds me like in movies they get hackers to crack thier way into a big company and a huge hacker battle insues.

Where's the random intern that just says "pull out the plug you fucking idiots"

If this does pass, and they are scanning your filesystem you'll notice a big drop in your internet speed and your drive will go all crazy too.

Then, there will either be a program to say that this is happening, or one that'll stop them from getting in.

How much to bet, if this does go through Linux will become much more accepted because it's way more secure.
