Black Ops, that will split this forum right in two. I was initially skeptical, I'm not a fan of Treyarchs entries into the CoD series, but a combination of the reviews, and just amazing adverts wore me down. It wasn't a good game, half the time I could ever tell who was who during the gun fights, and was called up on friendly fire more than a few times. That wasn't my only gripe with the game, but I'm sure my problems with the game are very similar to every other persons who doesn't like Black Ops.

Arcania - Gothic IV.

I won a bet on the quality they managed to produce, but it was the final nail in JoWood's credibility. Horrendous barely scratches the surface of the horrific crimes committed against "RPG" history in this title - added to this, they managed to commit every single "console development crime" in some kind of machoistic stereotype fulfilling ode to inadequacy.

Yes, it was that bad. Invisible walls. "You never liked swimming". Revenge of the bland clones from TES II. Add to this the CEO proudly declaring that the game "was what they were aiming for". Which shows you why the industry is in trouble.

On the converse side, Risen provided a good 20 hours of joy before it ran out of steam, and allowed us to re-visit Gothic 1 - sadly, they failed to actually code any dynamic world behaviour in there, which was a hugely missed opportunity (*cough* If the player has denuded the entire game world of fauna by the end of chapter 1, you should program the game so it notices this and then ramps up the ecosystems *cough*)

[edit]

Sorry, I missed pointing out that Arcania managed to bring a whole new level of bugs to a console game which are (historically), not supposed to suffer from bugs (too much, ahem ahem). Practically the only thing they brought from the PC history of the title was huge great stonking clonkers of bugs. Not a proud moment for coders anywhere.

APB... Had waited 4 years for it to come out... And while it was a fun timewaster, it got extremly boring in the long run...

...don't say "your mother", don't say "your mother", don't say "your mother"...

Seriously, though... Starcraft II.

FFXIII. It just wasn't fun. There wasn't one big problem, it was just all the little things that turned it from an enjoyable game to a chore.

Enslaved... it was 5 hours of bland combat, schizophrenic characters and finished with a Deus Ex machina that doesn't make any sense... and I was looking forward to it so much...<.<
Aww, I really liked Enslaved; I think it's because I'm a sucker for romance. I kind of agree about the "schizophrenic characters", though; Trip more so than Monkey, but I thought they handled the overall plot quite well. The ending was definitely bizarre. I liked it, even for the sole reason that it was NOT what I was expecting.

OT: Biggest disappointment was probably Dead Rising 2; not because it was an awful game, but because I was expecting so much more. It was quite enjoyable, but I don't believe it really improved on the original, which was innovative and creative. Good game, but could have been better.
Didn't really play any "bad" games, so can't comment from that point of view.

Cataclysm.

I quit WoW a while ago, the whole "Everything changes!" thing along with new Race/class combo's I'd been hoping for sounded great. The result: Everything is the same. Same boring quests, same barebones story..

How you can blow up the world and still feel the same, I don't understand.

Maybe I just played for too long.

The continuing tread of what should be minor downloadable content stretched into full game releases.

See also- Bioshock 2, Force Unleashed 2, Fallout New Vegas, Assassins Creed Brotherhood.

since we didn't specify games for the disappointment, I give you The Expendables.
Worst action film I've every had the displeasure of viewing.

As for games I'm not sure, I mean I didn't actually buy many titles last year and the ones I did get were good, I don't think I bought a game that hadn't already been out for a few months, apart from mass effect 2 which I almost overlooked because I forgot it was early last year it came out. Probably due to having less money to throw at games, as such I didn't get fable 3 like I wanted to (More out of the fact that I'd loved the series since the first and knew how Molenyuex thinks so I know what to expect from him) and I never bothered with black ops or reach.

so yeah... I had a pretty slow year I guess. Played a lot of really old games, some older than me...

DmC announcement.

Mass Effect 2. The combat was not improved in the slightest from the original. I can barely stand playing anymore.

Darksiders. Quite a terrible combat system despite what a freind had told me.

Bad Company 2, i love the game, but AWFUl support from EA and Dice make it a glitchy buggy, lagfest, and it dosnt feel like a battlefield game, hope BF3 will be better

Fallout New Vegas: Dead Money. The only Fallout DLC I actually regret buying.
Just Fallout New Vegas in general.
Fallout 3 is my favorite for this generation but New Vegas was just such a fiasco. I have never been more frustrated by a game.
And honestly, even if it worked properly, it wouldn't have been nearly as interesting as F3. They sucked all the life out of the experience: the map was so small and cramped I felt like I was walking around a movie studio's backlot. And they took out the random events so even those few pockets of space were boring as hell. If you're lucky you might get attacked by a giant wasp.
Near the end it really got excruciating to finish. It's too bad because I liked some of the things they changed: mission structures, companions, and aiming.

Fallout: New Vegas and Final Fantasy XIII. The ONLY two games I pre-ordered for the whole year, the only ones that I was really really REALLY excited for, and one turns out to be the most boring, automated grindfest I've ever played, while the other, while having a great story, was rendered unplayable due to freezing, slowdown issues that rendered some areas unplayable, and general glitches just ruining everything.

Here's to next year being better!

FF 13 for strange reason it wanted to be a ummm tactical Final Fantasy combat simulator with none of the old role playing stuck in. Dull world story that crawled, to many people say it gets better 30 hours in and course it did not.

Add special mention of Force Unleashed 2 for just to damn short, and you know they will leech another 20 bucks for 3 maps in a few months.

There really were a LOT of disappointments this year. Final Fantasy 13... and 14. Force Unleashed 2. Bioshock 2. But for me it was Metroid Other M because I really thought that it was possible to make it work. Instead, It became the worst game I have had the misfortune of playing.

Fallout: New Vegas.
I had to restart my playthrough three different times because ALL of my saves corrupted, and the one playthrough I did complete was a bug ridden mess, even after the patch.
Not only that, but the game was just Fallout 3 with better side characters to me.
Dead Money was a pretty big disappointment, too, personally.
