The "recent" ones that spring to mind are:

Brink
Prototype 2
Crackdown 2
Starcraft 2
Borderlands (PC)

However, the biggest let down of them all?...

Diablo 3. I expected SO much more from a Blizzard release. Should've learned my lesson from Starcraft 2. Blizzard doesn't give a rats ass about the "gamers" anymore. They're only interested in the "customers".

The biggest letdowns of all?

All the lost games. The ones that looked like they'd be really neat, but never came to be because of cancellation or being put on hold permanently.

Explain to me how improving the gameplay does not make a better game, please.
It was less of a game than SR2.
Less activities (where are the races?), activities as filler missions, less missions overall, no mission replay, downgraded customisation, no cutscene reviewer, forced choices for weapons (you can`t switch between single- and dual wild, if you upgrade once it stays that way), less buildings to visit(only 2 besides of your cribs), a less varied city, That`s all i can think of for now.

The whole improved gameplay is not much worth if the overall elements are downgraded and it´s not like SR2 is unplayable. SR3 gives you good gameplay with less to do with it. The freeroam get`s boring pretty quick.

Apart from that i don`t like the design choices and the character changes. SR3 is to over the top, has to much si-fi stuff and i miss the ruthless psycho maincharacter from SR2.

I had a bit of fun with this game but it was a short (way to short for an open world game), easy platinum trophy and i never played it again. SR2 is still on my harddrive.

The most disappointed I've ever been with a game was with the Wii.

Yes, pretty much every Wii exclusive as well as the system in general can be considered a massive flop. With the exception of Wii Fit(yes, really, Wii Fit) and No More Heroes, every game exclusive to the Wii is garbage. Motion-based controls are the cancer that is killing video games.
And yet here I am with an extensive library of great Wii games. I think you are referring to something else. You really didn't like Xenoblade, Sengoku Basara, Darkside Chronicles, Madworld, or Trauma Team?
I'm with Raika on that... the Wii is, by far, the most underused console I've ever owned, and I've owned every SEGA/Nintendo/Sony console since the NES days. Yes, it has good games, but they are much harder to find than with previous systems, lost, few and far between the insane ammount of shovelware that plagues the Wii.

Does it have the occasional good game? Yes, it does. But it had a far fewer ammount of memorable games than any of its predecessors. In fact, the only games I have REALLY enjoyed on the Wii have been New Super Mario Bros, Muramasa, Dead Space Extraction and No More Heroes... and even those last two had better ports come out later for the PS3.
You clearly haven't played enough. The third party devs have just been slow and need to pick up the pace on their quality game releases. I have faith in the good ones yet.
That's the thing: maybe I haven't played enough. But that is simply because the competition has a better, more diverse and far more appealing offering. When I look at Wii games at a store, I see one, maybe two games I want to buy, which are immediately overshadowed by any of its competitors and their gigantic catalogues where you don't have to endure twenty games to get to that good one. Having worked at Gamestop, I am well aware of how Wii games are sold, and it's a damn shame they went that route...

Spore - I had hoped it would be a deliciously complex game. It turned out to be shallow and uninteresting.

True Crime: Streets of LA - Waited for this game for ages, it wasn't BAD, it was just mediocre.

Black&White/Fable/The Movies - Oh Peter, for a metaphorical premature ejaculator, you sure do know how to foreplay.

F.E.A.R. 2 - "Let's try to scare the player every 2 seconds!"

Battlefield 3 - Bad Company 2, and especially -Vietnam was near perfect. BF3 is the bastard child of BF2 and CoD.

Crysis 2 - Felt way more linear and unimpressive than the first one.

I spend 15 minutes silently clearing a bridge of nazis, lining up my shots to get the most kills per bullet, and waiting til the sound is masked by bombs, and what do I get? More nazis spawn out of a door when I am halfway across the bridge! I reloaded and tried waiting for them, I even tried to get their attention by shooting at the door out of which they were running, but no. They spawn when you cross the bridge. And it's like this the entire game!

For me that ruined the game. I love preparation and sneaking, and nothing makes me feel cooler than picking oblivious idiots off 1 by 1, but in this game, probably about 5-10% of my kills were the sneaky kind, and the rest were cover-based headshots of instantly by-default alerted enemies.

Also the enemy counter snipers. God, they are annoying. The only way to spot them is by taking a bullet from them, and then scope out the location the shot came from.

Mafia 2

AND FINALLY:
Deus Ex - This game has been lauded as the best thing since sliced bread (which is pretty great), but when I got around to playing it 2 years ago, it hadn't really aged well. I was massively disappointed.

Fallout New Vegas, the game itself was alright but it disappointed me due to that there just wasn't enough available on the map to do.

Back when I was 14, I found a lone copy of Half Life 2 at K-mart and decided to buy it, I thought it looked like a great game from looking at the box art.

Shock and horror! How dare she mention such a brilliant game on a thread like this!

Calm down, I'm not hating on Half Life at all. Besides, I was never able to play it after I got it.

As you may know, Steam requires you to put in the serial number that came with your game.
Cool, lemmie just look into it's case and... Hang on. No serial number. What gives? Is it on the disc? Nope. Is it on the back of the box? Nope.
Confused and annoyed, I returned the game to the store the next day where I did get a full refund, but I also learned that someone had actually stolen the number from inside the CD case, so they could download it from Steam and play it for themselves for free.
Thanks a lot, douche.

This may not be the kind of game disappointment you were looking for, but hey, it sure disappointed me.

I say most Dark Fantasy games. Outside of Zelda, I've never been able to get into them, whether it be because of a shit story (Dragon Age 2), shit gameplay(Dragon Age 1), confusing world map (Skyrim), lack of my character speaking when I make a dialog choice(Kingdoms of Amalur and Skyrim), or just ripping another game(Castlevania: Lords of Shadows), I can never seem to get into them and they just keep disappointing me.

Knowing that should make you feel better. I assume you got the last copy there, since you didn't just get another one. And for an example like yours, I was disappointed with Magicka and Second Sight, because Magicka won't run on my computer and Second Sight requires me to click both mouse buttons, which my laptop can't do.
Geez, I was just posting my answer to the thread.
No need to be a jerk about it.

I cant help but feel the same, but for slightly different reasons.

Everything about it was near perfect, great looks, great models, that checking your ammo thing in realism? God that was epic.

It wouldve been a really good game if i could find a bloody server to play on nowadays. Its pretty dead.

I partly blame battlefield 3 for it....

For me the biggest gaming letdown, ever, was Spore. The fucking NO TEXTURE WIREFRAME concept mock up program for land phase (just after leaving ocean) had more complex gameplay than what was in the full game! It actually had critters than moved around and did stuff, instead of sitting at there next doing nothing until you came and killed/danced them. Space era? Terrible.. That game made me sad. Such wasted potential.

StarCraft II, sort of...

Diablo 3. (in some ways) Auction House ripped out one of the core driving factors of the game and took the joy out of finding loot.

Infinite Space. Too simplistic.

Half-Life 2. Combine? Who the hell are these douchbag assclowns? What even really happened? Even after finishing the game I was like WTF did I just do? What was the point of the story?

World of WarCraft is building trying really hard to hold a spot on my letdown list. Seriously? So many years later the classes aren't reasonably balanced, and most specs are not viable? Really? More money than some countries make and over 6 years of time isn't enough?

Syndicate. Never played it. Saw gameplay vids and knew in short order it's not Syndicate.

Dragon Age 2. Wagons were used as plot direction controls. Yeah. Also, the enemies appeared out of thin air in waves. And more recycled content than a sitcom clip show.

And yes, of course, the last few minutes of Mass Effect 3. All our choices meant NOTHING. The complete opposite of what the game was about. Artistic integrity my ass. That's just an excuse so you don't have to say you messed up and put the time and money into making it decent and make people think you caved in to the pressure. Tainting your great series is apparently more desirable.

Command & Conquer 4. Oh god...it was such a putrid pile of shit, I can hardly believe it. They literally stripped out every single one of the things that made the previous games great. They left nothing of even half-decent quality in the game. I was expecting something brilliant, which is what C&C3 was, but C&C4 most certainly wasn't!
This. This game was so disappointing I have already forgotten about it until now.

Good, someone mentioned it before me. Mafia II is the only time for myself where the very demo of a game is more entertaining than the full version (the demo being the reason I wanted the full game) I spent 30 dollars on it and was bored senseless, too much goddamn driving, awful checkpoints, barely passable excuse for a story. Feels like so much more could have been done with it.

Metro 2033 to some extent, I loved the atmosphere but the scripted events really became repetitive and tiring. The fake difficulty didn't help either.

But the funniest instance of a game being disappointing for me was Halo 3. Because I held my expectations lower than I thought possible and I was STILL disappointed.

I want to say Juiced for the 1000th time, but I wasn't expecting anything beforehand...

Aw, who am I kidding.

Juiced- 5 minutes playing could, in personal theory, act as novocane to the ending of ME3. Worst racing game of all time.

I tried.

Gran Turismo 5- The racing was good, great in spots, but once the race is over, it flows like cold molasses. How bad, I have more fun with GT PSP than this.

Ready for ammunition?

CoD- While I am not a FPS fan, I do try things out. Played some CoD 1, 3, and the MWs. So much hype, not much actual fun.

Battlefield 3- As I said to friend playing the game," I thought you said you took MW out?" He did. Tried it anyway. See the above.

NFS: Most Wanted- Forced cop sections, choppy animations, general BS, and other issues resulting in me staying at #5 or 6 since 2008.

NFS: Carbon- Liked the game more than MW, but problems of MW were magnefied. Then there's the final four races that by themselves took me as long to beat, if not longer, than the rest of the game.

NFS: ProStreet- Fun, but same issues from most wanted.

NFS: Undercover- Proof Black Box didn't get the memo that shit is broken.

NFS: Shift- The second worst racing game in the world.

Shift 2- The third worst.

NFS: The Run- Fuck you, Black Box.

Final Fantasy VIII- I'll admit, possibly the wrong game to start into the series with, but I was bored before the intro was done, and was forcing myself to get through part of it.

Uncharted series- Nice thought, but hated it once I got to play it.

That's all I've got. GT5 is the only one I was hyped for, all the others were either neutral or expecting crap. Can you tell which ones apply to which games?

I'm agreed with you here. While I found New Vegas to be a little too restrictive, it's my main gripe with Oblivion/Skyrim. My favourite part of TES V was when I got mauled to death by a Frost Troll because I was level 5.
That's what I love about Skyrim, running around caves or nordic ruins, getting to the end, finding out that the enemy placer put 3 draugr death overlords at the end, even though they dont spawn in the normal enemy lists for another 10 levels, then having the three of them take turns ragdolling my body around with their force-push shouts while the other two beat up on my with their ebony weapons.

They vastly improved on the enemy scale thing by adding enemies that dont spawn in the normal groups for another 10 levels or so, at the end of dungeons.

They do need high level enemies for once you get to level 40+ though.
