Biggest Mistakes on consoles.

The new PS3, it has no backward compatibility with PS2 games. They took off the SD card reader feature, which is ok with me. And reduce the number of USB ports on the console down to two. It's basically an old PS3 40GB with larger hard drive, but it's not remotely as good as the 60GB version during launch. I'm guessing this is going to one of the many things that lead to Sony's ultimate downfall in gaming.

The tiny PC elitist inside me wants to say "existing". I think the N64 controllers and the weird middle handle that was jutting strangely to make 3 handles for people with 2 hands.

I agree with you there those N64 controllers were just odd.

The PS3 is one big mistake..har har har. But really I think Blu-Ray was a pointless feature. The Ps2 had the DvD player feature when DvD's themselves were starting to make a name for themselves, so the public saw a good deal, get a DvD player to replace their VHS player and a console at the same time! Ps3 comes with Blu-ray and most people go "uh?" (Also it was launched when there was a format war between Blu Ray and HD DvD. Only recently Blu Ray won the war.) Maybe in a couple of years it will change.

You do know sony won the format war because of the blu-ray capabilities of the PS3 don't you?

Yeah, and where has it brought them? It was good at first when the PS3 was the cheapest BD player out there, but now that you can get players for nearly half the price, Sony can't revel in the victory.

RTS's (Again with the damned pluralization of genres). They need a mouse and keyboard to be played properly. If they don't, they're not worth playing in my opinion.

Endwar or whatever it was called almost had something, but the need to speak in a decently loud voice ruined it for me. Can't really play that late at night when others are trying to sleep.

Pretty much this.
FPS's (Doh!) are fine on consoles, and so is most every other genre...except the elusive RTS.
Endwar was the closest, but not perfect.

I don't think any major mistakes were made for the current gen consoles. Well besides the Nitendo wii that is. I mean does anyone even play games on that thing for longer then 30 min before he gets bored with it.

Well, seeing as they've sold about 50 million worldwide, I don't think we can qualify that as a mistake, let alone a big one.

Yes..and took them two years to win it too, two years they spent doing no profit. And so far the Blu-Ray didnt make the PS3 sell more. As someone said a Blu-Ray player is much cheaper than a PS3.

They made perfect sense if you were playing multiplayer games wih a large group. Except for A and B most of the split screen games had an indentical layout on the left side of the stick, which was great for lefties when you were playing bottom 2 comes off.
It's the main reason I dislike the current trend for offsetting the left analogue stick, it stops you having a proper Southpaw layout.

Anyways.

The biggest 3 mistakes of console gaming are (in my view):

3) Making it Purple.
2) "We feel rumble is very much a last generation feature, modern gamers want to explore new methods of control so we will not be including a vibration feature in our new controller,"
1) Five hundred and ninety nine dollars.
