Since I'm not counting visual novels (though Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night have a few), and I've yet to play Eternal Darkness, I guess I submit to you Tales of Symphonia, and its cliche plot of saving the land by releasing seals around the world to regenerate it...

...and watching Colette lose her soul in the process. And then finding out that the whole thing, the entire "cliched" plot, is a complete lie.

If you want old school, think back to Ecco the Dolphin. Surely I wasn't the only one terrified of the Open Ocean level?

Thief. Eye ripping.

nice to see some remember the old days. I worked so hard to pull that damn relic from the zombie infested church. Though i would gladly give my right eye for the mech eye that was crafted for him.

planescape torrment
you convince the paranoid incarnation to merge with you, by promising to keep him safe and take care of him, after all isn't that what we all really want?

Oh! Got another one!

In the new Prince of Persia; in the end when you/Prince cut down all the trees and bring Elika back and to put the Dark God to sleep once and for all. That. Was. Amazing.

C'mon, everyone knows by now that the biggest shock gaming history was when Aeris died.
Dont get upset with me if you havent experienced FF7 yet, because if you havent, you have gaming issues.

agreed
one of the few times in gaming I actually jumped
mainly because the first time it happened, it was 3 am on a stormy night (literally, not being cliche) and my phone just vibrated indicating a message, my attention went to the phone as I...
and then...
yeah.

EDIT: just remembered what was probably the biggest shocker to me in a video game...
Starcraft, original terran campaign.. When one of the Marines walked up to a security-console (in-game cutscene) and realized, in utmost dismay, he... didnt...
know..
WHERE THE "ANY KEY" WAS

I have never played FF7, never will.

Ohshi! I have gaming issues in that I won't experience the seventh game in an endless series of "samey" turn based combat and cliched character designs!

I have truly missed out.

Id say as far as plot twists, I liked an old game's twist...

In Obsidian, you dive into the computer to see where it took its creator, whom it worships like a god...then it tells you that its creator was no longer needed. Doesnt sound like much here, but the presentation was fantastic and so was the (short) game.

What's the biggest shock/surprise you've ever had while playing a videogame? Any sort of surprise, be it plot twists, dramatic set pieces, or good old-fashioned split-second pant-wetting terror?

I'd say mine was probably playing Vampire: Bloodlines. That haunted hotel freaked me out to no end... *shudder*

Sorry if this has been done before btw, I couldn't find anything with the search tool.
In COD4 every second during the nuke

It happens when you least expect it

then everything after is such a shock !

I was JUST THINKING ON THAT.

Edit: Also, Eternal Darkness. Until you get the spell to restore sanity, the game is SCARY.
Yes Eternal darkness was a fucked up game. You never now what was real. When I replayed the game i tried to drain my sanity at the beginning of each level(keeping enough to not damage my healt), really freaky to play that way.

I wasn't a big fan ( still not really ) of CoD4 but it deserves all the credit it gets for the bit after you get into the helicopter, was like 'pheew everythings fine *boom* OH SH-' then being made to slowly crawl around in the wake of a nuke detonation with all the creepy stuff playing in your head - was like something out of F.E.A.R. My face dropped though - I actually thought I had failed the mission. Then theres of course the ending, I won't say anything about it but anyone who has played it knows exactly what I mean.
