I think the success of THE plot twist everyone gabs about has a lot to do with how skillfully it was written. Support character stabs you in the back / changes identity - not new and exciting material, BUT:

Beyond the assumption that 'would you kindly' is just a verbal tick of atlas's, the game manages to actually break the 4th wall without being self-referential about it:

We're so used to following arbitrary instructions and objectives handed to us in videogames that we do so without really thinking about why, or an alternative. Consequently, our natural approach to progressing through the game as a player is actually implied via the game's writing and setup. We DID as the human behind the player character everything Atlas asked of us.

That kind of masterfully written meta-mindfuck is precisely why the 'big twist' in Bioshock stood out above all the other backstabbing-identity-changing-predictable-betrayal twists of other games. Even while paying homage to System Shock 2's twist, it retained it's own independence and integrity.

I'd agree IF there was ever an opportunity not to. The fact is there isn't, and whilst clearly that would also defeat the point of the twist, we have to follow the vast amount of arbitrary instructions in almost all games.

Final Fantasy 7: Cloud is actually the same solider level as Sephiroth and was once friends with him.

Was that a WTF moment when you first heard it and believed it? because technically it's not true, that whole thing was one big lie.

Every time I've completed the game it's always been Cloud was a soilder (not a Shinra SOLIDER but never the less the same skill), looked up to Zack (who was a SOLIDER) and was friends with Sephiroth, through Zack. Sorry if I said it incorrectly.
