And everybody who says it won't pass is wrong. Far stupider and more hurtful laws have been passed, and are still active. I don't ant to mention them due to being of topic, but trust me. I recall a simaler bill to this or even this one already passed all of the steps it needed to except the very last few.

Everyone send a letter to their state senators and etc.

If you aren't a amercian citizen, send emails to the white house or something.

Yeah, I don't see it going through, at least not until it's reworded so much it's almost unrecognisable. I'd like to say that in the event of a worst case scenario at least it's only the U.S.A, but that's flawed for two reasons. One, I'd say most content in any area of entertainment comes from the U.S.A, and I live in Australia, so we wouldn't be far behind. Kind of surprised we weren't the ones this originated from, but I guess our governments been busy filtering our internet in a much more unsupervised way...

There's no chance of this bill getting passed. Youtube is owned by Google, and they make millions from that site. Let's face it, Google would stomp all over any governement who even remotely thinks of implementing this.

I think we all know that even if this was enacted into law, all gaming/media companies would just redefine their copyright terms. Except for WMG.

Holy fuck, I hate WMG.

There are already better and more even handed laws in regards to copyrighted material being posted online. It's already illegal to post whole movies online, and that isn't being very well enforced due to the huge numbers of people disregarding it across many different hosts who provide anonymity (whether I support or condemn this shouldn't be taken from this, it's just to illustrate the difficulty enforcing these laws), it's already illegal to post full game videos on online without commentary, etc etc...

Games publishers and developers, film studios, directors, etc, artists and the music industry, would not want a more prohibitive law in place. They should recognise it would be detrimental to their sales. Fair usage laws already cover these legalities, and this new bill is just unnecessary and ultra-controlling.

I REALLY doubt it'll get far even if we ignored it, but we definitely shouldn't take such a lax stance in case it's assumed by the insightful geniuses that run the US, that we're somehow supportive of it. Let's get to making some noise...

Oh crap.
Before anyone gets to confident that this will be repelled due to how absurd it is....

...When they change a law that is going to be unpopular, they always make it much worse on the first draft, and everyone has a horrible gut reaction and hopes it doesn't go through.

Then it's usually revised, but still strips away your basic rights. But no one minds because we're just relived that it didn't go through as it was in draft 1. We compromise.

This is something there really should not be a compromise on. The whole thing needs to be chucked in a fire. The internet is being clamped down on enough as it is.

So many of my game purchases are decided by video reviews, and I've bought older games (which are no longer actively marketed) because of Let's Plays. SWAT 4 is a great example of this. I had so much fun watching a let's play when I saw it on sale on D2D I snapped it up.

I agree that movies and t.v shows should have this happen, but all youtube really does with let's plays and videos like them is encourage people to buy games. I wouldn't have bought Darkest of Days, Mirror's Edge, Assassin's Creed, or COD 4 if it weren't for the videos on youtube that showed me the gameplay and allowed me to make an informed decision, and I'm sure that there are many others who have bought games after seeing these kinds of videos.

Surely the big gaming companies should be opposing this? The internet, youtube, E3 is most of thier advertising surely.
They may be, but it's the film and music industry that are pushing for this. That they might damage the game industry indirectly is irrelevant. As for Youtube? It's not even a secret that they make most of their money off of copyright infringement. They do what they need to to maintain safe harbor, but they still profit off infringement.

You know that this if it pass (which it won't) will only affect u.s. The U.s goverment doesn't control the world so they can't make it illigal in other countries.
Tell that to the British college student who's currently facing extradition to the US because he linked to TV Show torrents in his blog.

Because UK doesn't have copyrights law themselves, right?

It's not like this will ever happen. Bills like this are suggested and tried all the time, and it never works. No real need to worry.

Let's be clear here. He isn't being charged with posting infringing material online. He isn't being charged with hosting infringing material. He's not being charged under UK law. He's being charged with linking to infringing content on a personal site, and he's being charged under US law for a crime which occurred in the UK. Quite frankly I don't know where they're getting subject matter jurisdiction to charge him, much less personal.

I don't understand this bill. Doesn't it being passed means that 98% of YouTube instantly gets nuked?

It's not the governments job to hunt down people that violate copyright. The TV and music industry (read RIAA/MPAA) need to get their freaking hands off my government. If your business model isn't working any longer perhaps you should consider revising it rather than attacking your customer base.

It's not going to happen.

On the plus side, if it does, it may include rule 34s of things from games, surely?
