bioshock instilled a more "wtf is this crap?" reaction for me
but friends kept me from putting down the controller from lack of any actual plot surfacing within the first 2 hours of gameplay

I don't think it is scary at all but then again I don't think that HL2 was scary nor do I think that of Resident Evil or Silent Hill or Eternal Darkness or Dead Space so I might not be the person to rely on.

Some blood stains, creepy sound, and the occational enemy that jumps around on the wall. If you played HL2 and liked it you got nothing to be scared of.

I got scared ONCE throughout the whole game, when I turned around and saw a disfigured splicer two feet away from me, the rest is just way too actiony to be scary.
Ah, I remember that :) In that medical place with the mist? I was half expecting it, but then again I half expected it whenever I entered a new room. Still scared me enough to hit it with my pipe a few more times than necessary.
That guy? He got me too, i literally dis-configured the crap out of his body, i beat every part of him with the wrench, then electrocuted him and set him on fire, shot him a few times to.

Hate for that guy, i still won't go in that room.
Oh yeh, where smoke fills the room, u get moved in front of a tonic, turn around then.....AAAAAAAAAHHH *BOOM* shotgun to the face! it scared me too

If you want a scary game then i recommend Dead Space, seriously i could only play for about 40 mins to an hour because of the dread and/or anxiety of the next vent and big room

As soon as I figured out that I can die without consequence or any real hitch, that even on the hardest difficulty I came across more supplies than I could carry, I could obtain every last special power and wield more powers than I needed etc then Bioshock lost all horror and it's atmosphere became moot.

I was spoiled by System Shock 2. It's not a scary game because it looks real and the critters are disturbing. It's scary because the lack of supplies, your general weakness, lack of skills, etc create a masterpiece atmosphere of tension that compliments and highlights the psychologically unsettling atmosphere Bioshock attempted to run solo with.

I'm just like you in this case and I was fairly concerned about Bioshock being scary beyond my limits. But this is the equivalent of babys first horror game, it eases you into the genre. Through my playthrough (Which is still going on. I take longer than most to finish a game because I like to savour them) There've only been a few genuine startle moments, the rest were easily predicted (Like the surgeon who burst out of the coffin after you sneak up on him. You all know which guy I'm talking about here), The atmosphere can feel creepy but it's more of a shudder grade creepiness and not some kind of drenching dread of death. The voice acting is top notch and when the characters say something which is genuinely suppose to freak you out you get a little bit freaked out. And apart from that I suppose the only other major thing you should know is that occasionally there are inescapible moments of a subtle but deadly sense of "Oh shit I have to turn around or do something but I know what's going to happen and I don't want to) such as when first encounter these guys called

Houdini splicers. When you first encounter one you have to chase him around this florist with creepy music constantly rising in a crescendo. Eventually you chase him into a room with a wierd shrine, you go up to the shrine and all you see is the dominating shadow of the houdini splicer just waiting there behind you.

But all that adds some very fitting atmosphere into a fun, addicting, incredibly immersive experience of a first person game.

The first time you play it, yes, very. The other times, it's still pretty scary, but nothing could beat the first time.

It's not that scary, it's more disturbing, if you will. It's full of scripted moments which give a "live" feel to the game. If you take your time to listen to all (or most) of the audio diaries, you're gonna hear some pretty disturbing things.

BioShock... scary?

Mostly no. But a bit yes.

It's often described - accurately - as immersive and atmospheric. Said atmosphere is rarely friendly and frequently leans towards creepy. However, BioShock certainly isn't scary in the style of Doom 3 or Dead Space. It's just not that sort of game. There are a few moments that will probably make you jump, but they're rare.
That said, I should probably admit that the one particular type of enemy scared the living crap out of me. And no, I'm not talking about the Big Daddies.

Bottom line: BioShock is an excellent game. You mentioned everyone raving about it. They rave for a reason. Besides, $5 is an absurdly good deal. So, would you kindly do yourself a favour and go buy it.

(For maximum enjoyment I suggest using the 'disable vita-chamber' option and playing on at least normal difficulty.)

Maybe I missed a big part of the game, but nothing in the game scared me...
I might have missed the crazy doctor or something,.... I do recall walking around after the video and stuff, and realised I didn't even turn around.. So I saw the doctor from like 10 feet away.. Not really scary :p

Some parts made me scared from the tension and suspense, like the frozen morgue in the first couple levels. I was never able to find that dentist's room though, but I can just imagine what it would be like if you weren't expecting it.
