I am still playing it. So far the environment is great and the story picks up after a while, but the gameplay is mediocre at best, and the UI has some issues too.

Sounds like you're playing it because everyone said how it's "TEH BEST GAEM EVAR!!!1!".
Take away the hype, and you've got a solid shooter with fun RPG elements and an interesting story. Once you add the hype, however, it just sucks the life out of the game.

Bioshock isn't industry changing, but it's a solid game.
Then again, maybe it's just not a game for you.
This. Hype has led to the hatred of plenty of perfectly good games (Halo, Gears of War, etc.) Try to enjoy it for what it is, and if you don't like it, you don't like it. Try to at least get up to the end of Hephastus(sp?). There's a really interesting bit there ;)

Other than improved graphics, Bioshock doesn't hold a candle to System Shock 2.

However, I still enjoyed playing through Bioshock.

Just got this game from my friend, played it today up until the point that Atlas' family dies in the sub and i gotta say...it really is not that great. It is not bad, the story is good and the atmosphere is awesome but nothing else stands out. What am I missing?
Exactly the same 'ere, heh.

Last night I did some Resident Evil 4 instead, and today, Theme Hospital. I feel like playing some Age of Empires II tonight, followed by some PES. But going back to Bioshock somehow doesn't rank top of the list of 'things I feel like doing in the near future'.
Oddly enough, your feelings on Bioshock are my feelings on Resident Evil 4. RE4 is a great big bag of "meh". So I stopped playing it and put in Ratchet & Clank,
Well, I didn't get far into RE4 last time, but I'm trying to now, and I'm starting to like it more (or it could be because I've been watching shitloads of live streams of RE5)

I've tried Ratchet & Clank on the PSP, couldn't hold my attention for long, so meh :p
That 'cause its not the PS2 games. Specifically, the ones after the original.

First of all, you're not very far in the game. Play it through first. Other than that, I agree with you. It's nothing special, although I did enjoy beating things with a wrench, and hacking was fun for a while...then I had to start trying to AVOID hacking things

To make matters worse I found the FPS mechanics, which make up most of the game to be incredibly clunky.
I found BioShock's gameplay to be nothing special... FPSRPG, virtually bog-standard with enough flourishes to make it acceptable though not brilliant.

For me, the gameplay was a necessary chore to be done in order to find out more about the setting and characters. Now that I've completed the game and found most of the audio diaries, I really don't see me replaying it... but I don't regret playing it the once, and I certainly enjoyed my explorations of that particular spook-house.

The first time I played it I thought the same. And you know what? I still wouldn't say it's a good game. Aiming is a little cumbersome, item management is pretty much neglected once you get about three hours into the game, difficulty is undermined with the Vitachamber system, and the ending is a little suspect.

However as an experience I don't think it's over-hyped. It invokes a very unique feeling (Yes I'm taking System Shock 2 into consideration and would still argue it falls into its own definition) and that alone sets it apart from anything else this generation.

Come on man! You've only gotten to the part where the sub sinks? you haven't even gotten to the good part. I demand that you go finish it RIGHT NOW!

i loved bioshock soooo much this is like blasphamy to me ^^ was the only reason i didnt kick the 360 out the door (well i have now thanks to it coming to ps3 :D) it was my fav game of that year, it had beautiful artwork, design and a very creepy setting with all the sounds work that went into it, but hey its not for everyone i know people who hate it and love games like halo 3 and cod 4 (figures eh)

Your not missing anything. The games high points is the atmosphere. The gameplay itself really is meh. I only played it two times though. It does not get much better since the Medical Pavilion is the best area, so if your bored already, at least wait until you meet Ryan for the first time, and the games short length will make it fast. You only have three more areas till then.

I thought it was a really cool game.

Call me crazy, but I managed to handle to controls without all that much difficulty.
I also love a game that has a deep story.

I liked Bioshock a lot more once I played it through, then went back to try and explore/find everywhere and everything. Then I began to make all of the connections, and then it became all the more interesting to me.

Oh and the hacking...it was cool the first few times but GOD now it just breaks the flow when i stop to hack a turret in the middle of a firefight.
I see what you did there.

Play the game through. Engage in the story, pick up every audio log you can, put the pieces together. You're supposed to be immersed in the game.

The game isn't fun because of the gameplay. Its fun because it is so easy to become immersed in the game.

The medical and Neptunes bounty part of the game are the two most boring chapters. Wait until you get to meet Sander Cohen, then you'll be having some real fun.
that bit is pretty cool actually...

XD
me and my bro are trying to get the Historian achievement, so he plays the game and i have the laptop :p
we're boring in that way...
i do the same thing but me on the game and then the yelling ensues
