Both games are mediocre.

You get great visuals and sounds, but the gameplay on both is meh.

Go with Mass Effect if you're aching for a new RPG that doesn't suck completely.

Go with Bioshock if you're desperate for a new shooter and have exhausted(played) all other options.

Mass Effect, especially if you liked KotOR . BioShock starts out well, but towards the end of the game it kind of goes down hill. Mass Effect however, starts out relatively slow but gradually gets better and better. The last couple of hours in Mass Effect are some of the best I have ever played. Oh and the end credit song is epic.

Both games have their strengths and weaknesses, unfortunately their weaknesses overshadow their strengths. Both have great graphics, and will give you hours of game play, but ultimately both games are nothing too special or ground breaking. You may get more enjoyment out of a game circa 1997 then with either of these games, but at the price their at right now, you may as well pick both up and figure it out for yourself.

both are loosely rpg/shooters but bioshock is more horror/shooter, mass effect more story/RPG focused. also do you prefer 1st or 3rd person? sci-fi or steam punk?

I only played the demo of bioshock need to buy it soon. I think I won't enjoy it as much because I'm not a huge fan of games that scare/freak me out. even parts of hl2 had me on edge...

I've played both and I'd have to say that Bishock is the best choice, especially if you're on the PC.
I thought that Mass Effect was utter shite.

Well....
-They're both third person shooters(/rpg) with an over the shoulder camera where you fight waves of enemies.(Well Mass Effect does have that whole "story" thing to it)
-In both games you aim and shoot very similarly.
-Thematically there isn't much of a diffrence, but Mass Effect does rip off the level design on some outdoor levels.
-And , yes the cover system is "ripped-off" from GoW even though it's done much better there.
-Third person shooters hav existed at since the 90's, and the concept of waves of enemys has existed in games for nearly as long as there ahve been games.
-Yes, it's called a TPS. See above.
-Name one please.
-Actauly if it was ripped off from anything it would have been from Kill.Switch.

I'll go with Bioshock, having played both I find that the mood, weapons and general setting of Bioshock are just... Awesome it's one of my Favourite Games of all time! The Steampunk vibe and the 60's/70's setting is simply awesome and immersive....

I'd say Mass Effect is a better buy, it has a lot of replayability. BioShock is almost worth getting just to see what all the raving fans are on about.

To be honest I've played and still don't know what they're on about. What's really so special about a corridor shooter with a decent story in which you can upgrade your guns and magical abilities that function just like guns (they even have ammo). Maybe they're just sexually stimulated by dieselpunk?

Anyway, for $20 each why not get both?

Mass Effect it has way more classes to choose from and bioshock has only 2 endings...Well 3 if you count a subtle voice change.

Id say ME Bioshock was just far too easy and when you have to handicap yourself on the highest difficulty to get a challenge you know the developers have done something wrong. Thats and the horrible endings, why no stinkin middleground ohh murdered one whole kid must make me Stalin reincarnate.

*[1]bioshock,*[2]bioshock, *[3]bioshock. *[4]if you think differently*[5] you must*[6]stupider than stupid!*[7,8]

1. Bioshock needs a capital.
2. See number 1.
3. See number 2.
4. 'if' being the start of a sentence needs a capital.
5. A comma would be prefferable here.
6. I think you need a 'be' between 'you' and 'must'
7. Stupider is not a word, please use 'more stupid'.
8. Consider revising that phrase.

Thank you, your continued donations keep Neosage running.
That being said, I did enjoy Bioshock more, but I never got round to completing Mass Effect.[/small]
I think the 'be' should go after must and not between 'you' and 'must'

Bioshock, it has a brilliant story, i can guarantee that anyone who has played Bioshock will agree when i say "would you kindly"

The only downside to Bioshock is that the end boss is a let down, and you start off weak and become chuck norris combined with god towards the end.
Chuck Norris is a god...

As to the question, Bioshock sits currently in my favorite game spot. Mass Effect requires more time though, a lot more time, but the payoffs bigger I guess. Oh and for clarification, Bioshock is more Art Deco than Steam Punk [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_punk]. Although some of the game's elements are very steamish.
