They don't give out "Game of the Year" awards to just anyone...

It's good. Get it.
They did give it to gta 4.... (not that I hate gta, but fallout or gears would have been better choices. I enjoyed saints row more so gta is basically everything yahtzee said) na Bio shock definatly diserves it, there is no way in hell Halo 3 diserved it. (custom games is the only good part)

Well, Andrew Ryan created a paradise based on objectivism, then it all went to hell Ikar-style. It was kind of a warning for mankind to not get too proud, feel like gods etc. but if it weren't for the plasmids, Rapture would be an awsome place to live, therefore objectivism works.
One of the more subtle features someone pointed out was the Ammo Bandito machines. Here we have a city in the midst of a biological civil war between an megalomaniac and a gangster, and the citizens must pay to defend themselves. Now, I like Objectivism as much as the next man, but does that seem right to you?

On topic: good game. Pay full price for it if neccesary.

Yes. Not the best game ever or anything but certainly worth a visit. A rental would probably suffice as it's easily beatable over a weekend of heavy playing and it's unlikely you'll feel the need to revisit it any time soon.

Ammo has to be transported or made somehow, and either way it cost money. It only makes sense that you'd have to pay for it. It's not like you had to buy ammo after a certian point in the game, at least not regular ammo.

No, BioShock is fairly innovative, but like my brother says, (exception obviously being all Valve games) "What's good isn't original, and what's original isn't good". It's extremely dark (mood and lighting), it's boring, it's difficult, it's laggy, it's got bad graphics, there's no weapons we haven't seen before, it's unneccesarily violent. Three words: DO NOT BUY.
I would say your brother is an idiot. How could we establish what's good without originality in the first place. Without originality there would be only side scrollers, dynamic lighting the ability to move your camera in all directions. Yes, the game is a glorified fetch quest, but you never mention the narrative, which was the main focus of the game. It has extremely nice graphics that many computers can run, which should never be a reason to not purchase a game. Bland weapons, the game is set in the 1950's. What are you expecting a super powered laser?

I didn't like it. I rented it for a week and tried really hard to enjoy zapping people with mah hand-liteninz, but I ultimately failed. It's just not the game for me.

But you're immensely stupid if you believe that BioShock's graphics are average. I'd agree with that statement on the PS3 version, but on PC with a mid-high graphics card it looks stunning.

Have you even played it?
The ONLY nongeneric thing is the setting but the gameplay is really bland, you basically have a pistol/tommygun/shotgun/flamethrower/camera/crossbow... wow.
Then there is your magic (no not plasmids, magic), which are most of the time very unuseful, you wont use em very often, because 1 or 2 shots will drain your mana (no, not eve) quick.

Its not a bad game, but there are much better games out there, if you get it cheap, buy it of course, but dont expect the messiah here

?: halflife is also very generic but i enjoyed it because of the believeable characters and EXTREME immersion

They gave you.... *gasp*....GUNS?!?
Those generic bastards. The game would have been great if not for those damn guns.

Dude, it's an FPS. Of course there are going to be guns. The "S" stands for 'shooter'. At least they're stylised to the time period, not a goddamn World War rifle or space laser.

I just don't see how combining genetic upgrades (no, not magic, genetics) with a flamethrower and an underwater 19050's dystopian city is in any way generic.

Also, clearly I have played the game.
I figured they give you guns... wait, what?

Did I SAY that there weren't guns? Uh, no. I didn't. Crossbow has obviously been ripped off from either TimeSplitters or Half-Life...

By the way, it's set in the 1960's, not the 19050's, in which case they WOULD give you space lasers. BioShock obviously didn't TRY to base it in the future, but they made it seem an awful lot like a futuristic one by the cover and manual.

My graphics card is a brand-new spiffy ATI that runs anything that XP can run.

Definatly worth a rental. It is great, but it has very little replayability. Beats the shit out of CoD though

I thought BioShock was a nice change from an average FPS. The introduction of super powers (known in the game as 'plasmids') was a nice touch and was done really well. It's as much fun as you can have setting someone on fire, then electrocuting (sp?) them, and then sending a swarm of bees at them, that is to say, it was barrels of monkies fun.

Now, people have complained about regenerating in the health cambers (I can't remember what they're called, it's been awhile since I've played) making the game to easy, but I really didn't see it as a problem.

You will notice I have only talked about the gameplay, and that is because I did not want to give away anything in the main storyline, as it was not a half bad story (other than one or two plot holes).

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you want something a little different, yes, buy it. It is well worth your time. :)

Someone said the game is cheap on Steam and other places.

1: It's not even on Steam, what?
2: I'm sorry, I though $90 (New Zealand) was actually fairly expensive... (for comparison, Ford Racing 3 is $30, Black and White 2 is $100, Half Life 2 Episode Pack is $50.)

The games is quite good; not "Best game EVAR!" but quite good.

Edit: Bioshock is on Steam; that's where I bought it.
