There are some black metal bands that tweak me really badly. Not so much musically as the members of the band themselves ie, Danny Filth.
But all in all the overall ambient and symphonic, yet destructive power of black metal is awesome. If I had to pick overall a black metal band, I'd be hard pressed to choose between Dimmu Borgir (With Nick Barker) or Zonaria.

Dani Filth rules. All else are mere ants. ANTS I SAY!
He's kind of a prick, unfortunately. Something about the "I'ma hoity toity douchebag" attitude that bugs me. Rest of the band were awesome though

Metal (gaaah loud stop i cannot even understand the words you are saying if you are indeed saying words cut it out right now)
While a lot of metal is indistinguishable grunting sounds (see Chris Barnes) there are alot that don't have the gutteral vocals, while still being heavy. Power Metal (Iron Maiden the best name in power metal) and alot of ambient metal (Do yourself a favor and listen to Damnation - Opeth, then listen to the rest of what they've done. It might surprise you :D)

Avoid death metal if lyrics sounding similar to "GRRRRROOOOMMMM GRR GRRGRRGGR RGRGGRGRG" (Thank you Growl Karoeke) bother you, but black metal has a nice mixture of many vocal styles.

Is Slipknot, Mudvain or Dark Funeral black metal? Those are probably as far as I go with that genre.
NO
Then give some bloody examples! What do you think is the best black metal band?
if you had bothered to read my first post you would see i said specifically that burzum is my favorite black metal band.

cradle of filth is technically black metal but you can do a lot better (i still like them though)

try Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Nargoroth, Venom, Celtic Frost, Bloodhammer, Immortal, Mayhem (before the daeth of euronymous), Satyricon, Enslaved, etc.

Norway makes the best black metal
for death metal go to sweden

I like some of it.
Mostly Cradle of Filth, but to be honest it's getting too loud.

I'll listen to it sometimes, but I'm more into the black/drone genre (namely, Khanate, Sunn O))), Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine). Some black metal is cool, some of it's...not so cool.

Of all the black metal bands people have listed on this thread, i have only heard one - Cradle of Filth. However, having heard them, i have no desire to hear any others. So much no desire that you could call it negative desire, if you felt so inclined.

It's not just the complete lack of talent that the try to make up for with epic distortion and picking fast and screaming like a tart. It's also the whole satanism thing that these bands embrace, all the killing jesus imagery and the "look at satan, he's awesome".

Don't get me wrong, i am in no way a fan of religion. But satanic obsession is to me just as ill-informed and stupid as any other religious persuasion.

I'm not ripping on black metal fans, because my taste in music is eclectic and often abused by others, and i think abusing someone for what they like is very douchey. I'm just voicing my opinion on the genre itself.

Someone mentioned Opeth. They have the right idea. Prog-metal ftw. In fact, anything progressive = win.

Crimson Moonlight's Veil of Remembrance is actually a really, really good album. I'm not usually a Black Metal fan, but that album just blew me away.

I like some Black Metal.
Most stuff is just too average and over the top for me.
I prefer death metal.
ACTUALLY, I prefer anything progressive.
