Being an avid fan of body horror, I think it's safe to say that blood doesn't affect me.

I can stare straight at the container when getting blood collected, but for some reason, i just hate bleeding from cuts... it might have to do with the fact that i got hurt for no good reason, or just the way it bleeds out...

I fell headfirst onto a cement floor when I was 4, and what made me cry over it was blood dripping my parents carpet. I suspect I was in shock/passed out for a while, because I can't remember any pain, or understanding what had happened - just my parents carrying me, with blood dripping from my forehead onto the floor. Always found it weird in hindsight.

Nowadays, I mostly get annoyed, though I do usually just get nosebleeds or cut myself slightly while cooking (especially while chopping onions). I'm not a fan of it, but I don't freak out.

So what is/was your typical reaction to seeing your own blood both in small and large quantities?

If I see a little blood, I'm annoyed at the most nowadays. Back when I was a kid though I used this as an excuse to beg my mother for candy. I've only seen a large quantity of my blood once and that was when I had a wooden spike go through my left foot. That was pretty terrifying and I feel a little light headed just remembering it.[footnote]The pain got much worse after it was pulled out without freezing the foot.[/footnote]

Your turn Escapist!
Indifference. I am so clumsy I just stopped caring. Example: A few months back me and my wife had been spring cleaning and my wife left a bag of trash by the kitchen door to take out in the morning. We had her nephews staying with us that night and in the morning we were going to go to a couple of yard sales before we took them home.

I woke up first and went to go turn on the coffee pot. I forgot the bag of trash was there and it must have had some glass inside because I bumped the bag with my foot and blood suddenly came pumping out of my leg.

My wife woke up ten minutes later and instantly started freaking out because I had put a towel over my foot and proceeded to make the children cereal while standing in a puddle that was quickly becoming a pool of my own blood. When she took the towel off I had a six inch wide gash going from my pinky toe all the way up to my ankle.

She argued with me while I served the kids their cereal that I had to go to the hospital. I kept telling her it wasn't that bad and that I would be alright. It's not that I was naive or in shock or trying to be a 'Tough guy'. I have just hurt myself so many times I think my brain has stopped telling the difference between a small wound and a huge one. It just goes 'Oh good, this retard has hurt himself again. Turn off all pain receptors I REPEAT TURN OFF PAIN RECEPTORS DON'T WASTE THE ENERGY!' It really didn't look all that bad to me.

Anyway she finally convinced me to go, so I threw the trash, took the kids home and went to the hospital where I received twenty one stitches to close the wound. I have a nasty gash on my ankle that is constantly numb because of nerve damage. They told me I was an idiot and I readily agreed with them.

The only thing that made me feel bad about the whole ordeal was that I had thrown the glass in the trashbag without any thoughts of safety or proper disposal. I thought I had grabbed that bag earlier in the day but I guess I didn't. I thought about the kids sleeping over and how shitty I would have felt had one of them gotten hurt. Maybe that's why I made there lucky charms, I fed them sugar to mask my guilt.

I have no problem with it. I got injured the whole time as a child and in the past year I@ve seen enough operations to be more or less desensitised to it.

If it just won't stop, then I don't like it, but generally I don't mind. I played rugby for most of my life so I don't mind seeing and getting wounds, they don't freak me out.

The only time I was terrified by the loss of my own blood was when I was a little kid, and a dog had torn most of the left side of my face off. It was just bleeding so much that the little tiny body I had at the time couldn't have handled the loss, and I kinda passed out. And a little off topic, that was the last time I know of that any doctor made a house call (way back in 1977).

I've bled all my life. Whether it be the numerous grazes on my knee, the massive leak of blood from my elbow or my daily nose-bleeds for 3+ months.

In real life, I'm unaffected.

Generally my first reaction is to appreciate the vibrant red color. Then I ignore it unless it threatens to get on something, there's a lot of it, or the wound itself needs cleaning.

I suppose I should say that I go on a lot of geology field trips, and on these trips if one doesn't get small holes in the skin of the palms or knuckles after a couple days, then one is probably not working hard enough. Bleeding (in small amounts of course) is a normal feature of these trips.

My own? Meh. Don't give a s**t.

Others? Depending on the situation it's either: Go get a bandage and something to absorb the blood and constrict the flow. Or, very, very, hot.

I don't like bleeding, because it's generally involves pain and tends to be more than a little inconvenient... but I have had two incidents where it was quite a bit moreso.

1) Knife I was cleaning (I hated cleaning tape residue after Christmas... and I was in my early teens.) sliced a small bit of my thumb pad. Knowing my mom would freak from the copious bleeding, I went to the bathroom to clean the would and bandage it up. Turn on the faucet, stick my thumb under the flow, and choke down a scream as the skin gets folded back by the water. I immediately shake my hand off and clamp down on the throbbing thumb... and wilt a little when I notice the perfect circle of blood droplets from the spray; counter, walls and ceiling.

And, yes, I cleaned it all up, and bandaged my own hand, before my mom knew ANYTHING about the cut.

2) (Not very long ago, actually...) Rode to my daughter's school to pick her up from Pre-K... and got bit on the leg by my bike as I "dismounted".

Now, this isn't your run-of-the-mill diamond frame. My wife and I ride on a pair of Catrike Road recumbent trikes (His & Hers; Blue & Red). You ride in a laid-back position with the crank and main chainring out in front of you. To "dismount" youhave to stand up, and then extricate yourself from between the front tires, and around/over the boom with said cranks and chainring.

Somehow, I got my left foot caught on my pedal while swinging over the boom, got torqued around to have my caught leg's shin and calf get dragged over the teeth of the chainring. So, I got to walk into my daughter's classroom with a spiral of perforations lazily coiling up my lower leg and several red zebra stripes of blood flowing down into my sock. I was able to use the classroom's first aid kit and get myself cleaned up for the ride home.

And now I have a better reason why I live in S.FL and hate the beach: shark bite; nasty little bugger. Want to see the scars? (Still need to see about installing a front chainguard, if they make them for the 2004 model.)

It fascinates me.
When its only a few drops I just tend to ignore it, when its heavily bleeding I tend to just watch it drop down and enjoy it.
I'm weird that way, but I am also a masochist.

Just before I speak, cat scratches have a nasty habit of getting infected, so, if doesn't feel like it's going to heal up cleanly, or anything, you might want to get it looked at.

OT: I don't mind blood at all, but I'm pretty squeamish about the wound itself, be it anything from a large cut to something broken.

Don't really react. I generally try to stop it so I don't get blood on everything, but I don't care otherwise

I don't know if this is normal, but I have no problem with localised injury.

I watched my own toenails being removed (ingrown toenails), and I thought it was awesome.

But if I had watched someone else having their nails removed, I probably wouldn't stop squirming and saying "ew, ew, ew, ew, ew".
Same though the injections were unpleasant to say the least about them >_< Had five in each of my big toes so ten in total. After that though, I just talked with one of the nurses who was doing the procedure about Christmas (it was December back in '08 when this happened). Looking at the nail being removed though was more interesting than it was gross though.

I bleed all the time, as I own plenty of cats. Pretty immune to it by now. I suggest you put something on the bleeding wound to keep it from infecting. Cat bites are the worst, but cat claws can also harbor ugly things scratched out from the ear or shuffled out of the litterbox.

When I was a kid, band-aids were badges. During major surgical moments (like the reconstruction of my face), the only thing I thought about seeing and swallowing excess amounts of blood was that it tasted like eggs. I proceeded to puke normally afterwards (as blood does not sit well in one's stomach, especially if it's your own).

At one point in life (the Malpractice era), I would cut or scratch myself to feel something, anything. For one reason or another I took pleasure in seeing the blood. This was due to the excessive, near deadly amounts of Paxil I was prescribed. This was also before they realized that Paxil was bad for people in their teens. When I took myself off the medication, the problem went away. The scars have since healed.
