People are lazy. And there are the Wrath babies who scream "It's a game, why should I have to put any effort into it?" Those two types are the reasons the gold sellers make as much as they do.

That said, I've always wondered why Blizzard doesn't just stop the hacking. I don't know much about what they have to do to design the game, so I may be totally off here, but here's my idea: You know how the game is now capable of recognizing when you enter a certain area, and it will give you a buff or summon a certain quest peon? Why not make the game "aware" of when a PC enters the world under the actual world, and have it...I don't know, summon a mob that insta-kills you?

I like how SWG handled credit spammers. They allow certain players to mute other players, however if you are muted you do not know it and see your own txt in chat. Also newly created characters can hear muted players for a period of time i believe.
LOTRO also has an interesting way of handling gold sale spammers. All you need to do is right click their name in the chat box and then click the "report as spammer" button. It both puts them on ignore for you and flags them for the CSRs as a gold seller instantly. Once the CSRs see the flags popping up on their end, the gold seller gets removed and banned.

Why don't they just enter direct competition and offer gold and items for real-world currency themselves? That way, the gold farmers and item sellers and whatever would get into real trouble, and Blizzard could squeeze even more money out of their players.

I don't see the point to gold sellers myself. Why would anyone want to pay real money for fake money?

Though, to be fair, MMGs defy logic for me as well, so...

I still don't understand how anyone needs to buy gold in WoW. Of all the MMOs out there, WoW is by far the easiest to acquire large sums of currency. I have more gold than I know what to do with, and I haven't even tried to make gold for months now.

If you have access to a few characters above L75, you can make thousands of gold a day in less than 30 minutes play time just using profession cooldowns.

If blizzard wants to kill all gold farming completely from everywhere then they simply need to under cut them by selling the gold/items themselves. It is win/win the players get cheaper gold and blizzard makes money.
This would completely and utterly destroy the in-game economy, as well as making playing the game pointless. Why grind out heroic instances when I can just buy the items I want? Why use the auction house when I can just buy the gold I need? See where this is going?

Gold selling hurts the game, there is absolutely no way Blizzard would even consider selling gold/items for real currency, beyond vanity pets and mounts and things of that nature that don't matter.

I don't like that a gaming company can close down paypal accounts they feel were linked to gold sellers.

Blizzard is absolutely full of crap on this one.

I'm going to believe that more than likely this will hurt their fanbase a lot more than they know. There were probably other ways to do this but by enforcing this on Paypal, it's going to have severe repercussions on them.
Why? It's only hurting people who sell gold.

I think this is a good idea, of course it's not going to stop gold selling, but I wouldn't be surprised if it sees at LEAST a 25% drop from this, which is completely worth it.

If that happened, the game would no longer be "World of Warcraft"

it would be "WarcraftVille" where people pay money for virtual items that have become meaningless.

So you want WoW to become WarcraftVille?

It would completely ruin the game if nobody had to work for anything, and could just buy whatever they wanted.

I don't really know what you are talking about, there is no hacking going on.

In the game, players can trade gold to other players, in the real world, money can be transferred by paypal.

The buyer pays the seller in the real world using paypal (outside of WoW) then they meet in the game, and the seller trades the gold to the buyer.

There is no hacking, and no way to detect what is going on, because in game, all Blizzard can see is that someone is giving a very generous gift to another player.

Meh... won't do much, but anything that makes selling gold more difficult is worth trying.

Honestly if people aren't willing to earn gold properly then they shouldn't be playing the game. Cheating in offline games is all fine, but on an online game it can negatively affect the experience of other players.

They got Blizzard to roll back on privacy concerns. It may ramp up if Blizzard starts being dicks about it.
Blizzard backs down to legitimate complaints. "But I wanna buy gold!" is not a legitimate complaint.

"PayPal is giving the owners a chance to either prove their innocence or stop selling virtual products and services."

Remember back when the accuser had to lift the burden of evidence and the defendant was innocent until proven guilty?

I don't even know why blizzard is complaining but if I could print money I'd probably also ***** a whole lot ... no wait ..

Seriously why do people even buy gold?

I can easily make 1-2k gold an hour and that is plenty for raid flasks and enchants.
1-2k an hour! What the hell am I doing wrong! I'll be lucky to make 400 in a day!

Why doesn't blizzard just sell it in the form of microtransactions? Gold is a pain in the ass to get unless you have a ton of free time.

Just do that and you have put the majority of them out of business.

Yes, I'm aware of how gold selling works. I was referencing the under the world hacks for herbing/mining, IE how they get the gold they sell.

Okey, since I actually pondered buying gold recently, I'll put my two cents in.

This is why people buy it; It's easy.
Let me use my situation as an example. I had racked up 30k of gold just before Cata (for you who don't play: It was a fairly decent sum in the recent expansion Wrath of the Lich King, you could get several nice items for it in the endgame). I picked up Cata around three weeks after launch (because I got hacked and couldn't be arsed to fix my account any sooner), and started leveling from 80-85.
When I hit 85, I once more wanted to raid. I did not WANT to grind the horrible heroics with the 40 min waiting time on average for DPS, I did not WANT to spend hours and hours grinding herbs or similar so that I could sell on the Auction House. But I had to do it, because I had failed to realize that when a new expansion hits, prices skyrocket. A single high-quality item easily sold for 25k gold.
My friends and sister had started playing three weeks earlier, were already raiding,b ut I lacked the gear to play with them. Blizzard pretty much told me "You wanna have fun with your friends? Sorry, gotta do the boring shit first before you get to play!"
So I glanced towards the goldspammers, and a part of me just thought "50E and I can save myself hours and hours of time wasted and go straight to the fun part!", but..I did not.

Partly because I know it's wrong, partly because I am afraid to get banned, but mostly because (and most people know this, deep inside) the ENTIRE WOW-EXPERIENCE IS A GRIND. Really. If you BUY your items with gold made from real money, it won't feel as awesome as when you finally have it in your hands, knowing that you have worked so hard for it. You're pretty much shooting yourself in the foot. Why do you think Blizzard makes old epics pointless with every expansion? Because if there's nothing to grind, to desire and wish for, then the game collapses.

Now, more on topic: Is this a good move by Blizzard? Geh. I doubt it. As it has been pointed out, you can easily just switch payment method. Still, nice to know that they care.

Get Herbalism/Mining, have epic flying, go grind. A stack of your average herb/ore sells for around 50-70g on my server. I can make three stacks in an hour, easily. When you get crafting (making epixxx for people), money becomes even easier.

Ha. I buy my gold from an RL friend and just pay him cash.

We're still in business, so come at me, Blizzardbro.

Nobody is actually affected by gold buying. Nobody really cares, either. It's just a good 'cause' to jump on and rabble rabble about.

What's more is I can't be caught, because Blizzard doesn't monitor New Zealand closely enough and to them we're operating from the same computer. So to them, my friend is an alt who makes the gold while my main spends it on himself.
