I don't really care because nobody seems to get it right. What bothers me most is Dragon age. I kill a mouse and it looks like someone dumped a bucket of blood over my head, wtf? But because it's so common in games, it's kind of unnoticeable.

There are places where it works, but also places where I see no blood and feel it breaks the immersion, and places where I see too much and facepalm at the studio's attempt at being "gritty." So it's contextual to me. It's an art, and can be done very right or very wrong. Like swearing. There's a difference between a good curse when the situation demands and gratuitous obscenity.
EDIT: it's also somewhat fun to drill a dead Grunt in Halo until you get more blood on the ground than physically possible, but thhat's just for the lulz.

Swearing and violence is second nature in games. Sex will soon follow.
And that is a throughly depressing thought if it continues in the same self deprecating vein it inhabits now.

Doesn't bother me at all, but there are appropriate games for it and inappropriate games for it.

It doesn't belong in games for children.

My feelings on this are fairly straightforward. Blood happens. Things bleed, so excluding it is kind of silly.

Going over-the-top with it so long as everyone's fine with it being deliberately silly is ALSO fine, because that's like parody, harkening back to the Evil Dead days where a blood-flood is actually campy and funny.

Doing it just because you want to be the bloodiest is actually pointless. This is kind of why later Mortal Kombat games after the second one lost their luster. (The vote is still out on more recent games.) The reason it worked in the first two games was because they pushed the envelope and invented the bloody death of your opponent. Once that happened though, it became ordinary, and pushing it farther became ridiculous. Oh, and MK isn't even the worst abusers of blood anyhow, so my using them as an Exhibit A is through.

Exhibit B for overdoing it is the Splatterhouse remake. If you like it, then I have to assume you like LOTS of blood ALOT of the time. Because if you don't like that much blood, then why are you even playing this game, whose point it is to horrifically murder opponents? And don't you tell me it isn't that graphic, Splatterhouse fans. The game's title tells it like it is!

Now, I can't stop blood from happening, and I wouldn't want to. I simply won't buy the ones I don't want to buy. That's freedom of choice in action.

I think the idea of blood is: in moderation. Especially when you're killing humans. How much blood does a human have in it's body? Certainly not as much as Dragon Age sprays around.

I think blood can set a mood. It can help create an atmosphere, but it shouldn't be used as the only things setting that mood. Then it can have an opposite effect.

Just like seductive women in revealing clothes can help set a mood of adult fantasy, blood can help set a mood of danger and destruction. But when it is relied upon solely to do that, it becomes ridiculous. Like the developer is saying "Look at us; we are adult. We have boobies and blood!". It is PART of a scene, hopefully creating an atmosphere of a mature game, not the ONLY sign that the game is intended for adults.

If the game doesn't take itself too serious, blood fountains don't bother me.

However, in a game like Dragon Age, they could tone it down a tad. The bit where you kill some rats and are completely drenched afterwards is unintentially hilarious.

I see it as an artistic choice. Games with ridiculous amounts of blood feel different from games without any blood. There's nothing wrong with how either feels, it's up to the developer to decide what they want to convey. But then there's people who just can't stand the thought or sight of blood even if it's obviously fake, and yet others who think that blood directly equates to violence and thus shouldn't be viewed by minors (I really don't understand this).

Blood decals are the first thing I turn down if I'm having any sort of framerate issues with a game. Blood itself doesn't add any value to the gameplay experience for me, so if tamping down the effects means I can crank up detail that does matter (texture depth on characters or scenery, for example) then I do it.

The thing about Star Wars is that most of the weapons in the Star Wars galaxy generate enough heat damage to cauterize any wound almost immediately after impact.

Anyway, I am mostly desensitized. Blood in games doesn't shock me like it used to and when too much is put in then I see it as more of a spoof. Gears of War is brutal but once your enemy dies, it turns into a multi-piece meat puzzle. Funny stuff I think

I liked the blood in Dragon Age, even though it did get ridiculous at times. But it's a good change from those RPGs and action games where your armour remains immaculate after gutting dozens of enemies.
yes! I agree completley, alot of people didn't seem to like it but for me it just added an extra somthing to the game

I hope they keep it for number 2, if they don't well no big deal I'll just be a tiny bit disapointed

generally blood all depends on the game I just realised there isn't really blood in Mass Effect, mabye a little more int he second one if I remember correctly, but I never gave it any thourght

It all depends on the mood the game is going for. Blood in Gears? Works great because the game has that fun violence feel to it. Blood in a game like the Tales series? Only if someone just got run through with a sword. Having a lack of blood can completely ruin a game's feeling too. See Xenosaga Episode III.
On a side note: There's no blood in Star Wars because ever weapon that is used burns the wound shut (yes, I know there's a medical term, but I don't know how to spell it and don't want to look any more like an idiot). Think about it: Blasters and lightsabers. That's it.

The word you're looking for is "cauterize". Learn it, live it, love it.

Bah, is there an issue if you have a problem with blood and still play bloody games? Alright. Maybe there is, turning stuff to ash in fallout to not see blood is damn hard i tell you.

That's the one! I knew it, just too lazy to go look up how to spell it. Or scroll up a few posts, as apparently someone already pointed out the same thing.

I think that people tend to forget that gore, including blood, is like punctuation. You use it to underscore the gravity of the situation as you would in text with an exclamation point, but if you go overboard then people just roll their eyes at you. For example:

Oh my god, he's dead!
OR
Oh my god, he's dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first one makes the point, the second one is just annoying.

Besides which, side glimpses paired with imagination are far more effective than anything which is actually shown. If you cut to black right before the sawblade hits a living target then the audience will do far worse to themselves than you could ever do with special effects.

I always liked the color red so I think blood looks pretty cool sometimes, and when it's overused for the sake of comedy it's strangely effective and can set a mood if something is bloodless until a certain point.
