It depends on the type of game you want to make. Blood and gore also provides good player feedback as you can see how much damage your attack did, without a floating number.

Also, games like Left4Dead 2, has blood and gore make the experience better (see: uncensored vs aus version). the australian one, no gore and bodies even disappear as soon as they hit the floor. it's ultimately less satisfying.

Escapist, I am disappoint.

Depends on the game. Although there's no actual blood I find the level of showy God of War style sadism in parts of The Force Unleashed rather out of place in a Star Wars game, especially in the DLC. On the other hand I can fire a dozen bullets into a PKA soldier in Crysis and it doesn't leave a single mark on him, which I find totally inexplicable, given the 18/M rating of the game.

Then there's Fallout 3 and it's magic decapitating bullets. There's a game where the developers were way too in love with their dismemberment physics and applied it to everything, regardless of sense.

Like so many others have said, it depends on the game. Simpler and older looking games just wouldn't feel right having jets of blood from every hit, but little splashes that vanish in the air can lend to some realism. If they're meant to be "Horror" games then yeah, blood is going to be a given. Some games do rather well with blood and entrails bursting out all over, like Mortal Combat, because the beat-downs are so ridiculous that the gore puts the cherry on the overkill cake.

Most games I play tend to treat blood fairly well but I know there are games that treat it in a more juvenile way such as the blood fountain that characterize a few games. Excessive blood or the odd tendency to confuse jelly jam with blood bug me but most of the time I don't really care.

If there is no blood in a game I generally don't miss it, if there is too much blood in a game it starts to bother me. Usually too much blood is when they start to squirt more blood then they should really have.

Eh, I don't care about blood in games. Personally I normally turn it off so that my computer won't die under the strain of a few extra pixels.

I need to get a decent gaming rig.

I generally like blood in games, if somebody gets shot or stabbed it would ruin the immersion to not see blood. One game that used blood to great effect was Carnivores. If you wounded your prey but didn't kill it, you could follow the blood trail to finish it off. That was especially useful on snowy landscapes.

Blood is blood, it's symbolic of death and the red color of rage or passion.

Most games don't use these symbollic aspects though and just throw in blood to prove that they're all "mature".
I guess blood is an acceptable substitute for deep, mature storytelling.

I like it in fps games. It makes getting kills so much more satisfying. Other than that it depends on the game. I'd like to see it a little bit more where it's appropriate. I think that games that showcase brutal finisher kills should at least have some (I'm looking at you, new Prince of Persia and Legend of Zelda) but other than that I wouldn't change much.

well the blood in Gears is more for comedic relief imo. Its super shiny and buckets of blood comeout when you get hurt, so much that its funny.
