It depends on the game.
If it's CoD, I go with classic rambo-stuff (there is no such thing as sneak)
If it is Crysis, It really doesn't matter, since I'm invincible, super fast, super strong, and just generally a juggernaut.
And Far Cry...
Cheese for everyone!

I tend to like to sneak in blow stuff up style games, and vice versa. Take, for instance, the original Mercenaries. For fun times, I decided to make a large North Korean base go asplode. I was also in an NK choppa, and, at that point in the game, choppas were quite rare, meaning I was reluctant to get out. However, my dilemma was that the choppa I was in carried a minigun and two anti-tank rockets, not the best base-asplosion package. I landed on a nearby mountain top and scoped out the area. The only thing preventing me from using a satellite-guided stealth bomber to stealthily destroy about 500 sq. feet was two jammers. I would have taken these out with my anti-tank missles, but there were five SAM launchers around the area ready to blow me out of the sky at the slightest provocation. So what did I do? I dragged each of the jammers off of a cliff. Each choppa in Mercs has a magnetic winch, and gunships and transport choppas can completely lift items my crappy scout choppa could barely drag at a snail's pace. After about ten minutes and getting my choppa damaged to a single HP above bursting into flames, I finally went back to my mountain, and rained fire down from the heavens. It felt so good.

best approach to any situation, really
Yup. It's called a diversion.
Enemies are usually too distracted from being blown to bits or set on fire to notice me sneaking past them.
This man speaks the truth ,being set on fire ,or dodeging explosions is realy pre occupying

Sneak. Plant a big explosive thing. Sneak. Blow explosive thing up. Sneak. Kill anyone that explosion didn't.

Fallout 3: Sneak attack critical with a missile launcher!!

In all seriousness though, I don't usually go much for sneaking, since I'm not much good at it (unless I'm in a submarine, then I kick ass). Typically, give me the biggest gun, the most powerful explosives, the toughest tank, the most advanced power armor, and I will wreak massive unholy havoc on everything that moves and most things that don't.

Lock n' load, baby!

I do one of each. But I tend to like blowing crap up.

But the first few people have a point. Why can't you blow crap up while sneaking, like setting off a bomb or something?

Well I just finished a Fallout 3 run, where I made my primary skills Explosives, Sneak, Big Guns, and Lockpick... so I can't really say for sure.

I usually have a gradient of the two: I prepare for the fight with mines and take the time to find a good point to attack from. Then I raise hell with disregard for continuing my subtlety.

A combination of both, especially in Far Cry 2. I'd plant an IED around a car or something, get to a safe distance, blow it up and while they were distracted and on fire fill 'em full of AK rounds. Fun times.

Snealing in CoD4's "All Ghillied Up" was really fun. I wish more games followed in its footsteps.

The best way is to sneak up, and THEN blow things to pieces.

Or...

Simply sneak up behind the thick idiots and stab then.

Works for me!
Exactly. Any chance I get to take out an opponent in an excellent manner, I take. It doesn't matter whether by stealth or via the Leeroy Jenkins method. As long as I can do it in a game with minimal damage to myself (well, most of the time), I'll do it.

Depends on the situation. Are there lots of squishy targets called bodies it would be fun to destroy?
Let's get me rocket launcher.

Am I severely overpowered by my enemies?
Perhaps I'll flank 'em. Who knows?

Depends on the mood I'm in. Sometimes if I'm feeling tactical I go sneaky, but if I get annoyed I start blowing shit up a la Mercenaries.

I am a disciple of the "Kill it with an explosion the size of Tokyo" school of thought. Can you sneak past a wall of flame? Well? Canya?

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I'm angry and i just want to brutally kill polygons.

Sometimes I'm in a better mood and I get more satisfaction out of silently, brutally killing polygons.
