Blow up Sydney Instead.

Ok now before I start getting flames, I want to post the reason for the title... it got your attention. Now that I have it, I shall begin my mini rant. Why do all these types of games have us traveling to New York, just to fight over its remains? I mean, am I the only one who is sick of traveling the ruined, destroyed scenery with layouts that are close to identical, despite how pretty the graphics are? Note that I'm using Mass Effect 3 as the example, because that's what set me off.

Why can't we ever fight somewhere unusual, and perhaps interesting. Lets get some scenery into it, make things a little more iconic. I propose that rather then going to blow up New York AGAIN in mass effect three, we instead switch that portion of the game to Sydney Australia. I mean, can you imagine standing side with your allies, firing round after round into the surf, as waves of Husks and similar come storming up the colorful and beautiful bondi beach?

Or how about charging up the sides of the great coat hanger, only to look down at a tremendous crash, seeing our beloved opera house shattered by the dramatic entrance of a ruined reaper crashing down into it.

Then, with no time to waste, you quickly finish running to the top of the bridge, going after the macguffin or whatever had attracted your attention. Instead, rather then risking a fight, your forced to flee once more, as another reaper comes storming down after you, attempting to blast you out of the sky.

Until fearless Jack (because which other human character is badass enough to be Australian) shows off exactly why shes Humanities strongest biotic, using the bridge itself to capture the reaper, twisting it into a cage made of patriotism and heroism trapping it in our beautiful scenic harbor.

I mean seriously, why return to the same old song and dance, when you can add the classiness of Australian culture and Truly make ME3 the GOTY.

There's more USAliens than Australians, and setting a game in another country would confuse them. You don't go broke underestimating your target audience.

On the other hand, I did hear once about a city in the US that wasn't New York, maybe they could set games there instead.

Is it just me or is everyone started moaning about new york always being destroyed because Yahtzee said it in his crysis 2 review?

I started complaining when Bioware announced New York as a possible location.

Yeah I totally know what you mean. Wouldn't it be cool if they made a game where aliens invaded mombassa or something?

There really is a trope for everything.

That would be cool, but I'd rather do a little beach side fighting instead

I think they use New York because it's an iconic American location. I'm sure most of their audience lives in America, so they want to use something that would generate an emotional effect. The destruction of the Opera House to an Australian would have the same effect as the destruction of the Statue of Liberty to an American.

Because the "Natural" wildlife in Australia is more than able to kick any kind of invader ass.

I'm was on about here and now, because I've heard no complaints about new york being destroyed in games until recently, I'm guessing Yahtzee and the mass effect 3 things being the main causes at the moment.

Yes, but New York is overused, to the point of Parody. Sydney provides great views, unique scenery, and of course access to the Greatest people in the world. Not to mention that due to a certain Radar station, it also has an excellent strategic target, considering its one of the Largest Homes of SETI, making it more likely that the Reapers would know where to find it.

There are tons of nice places to destroy everywhere. I personally would love some sort of 'storm the bay' scenario played out in San Francisco bay. In a boat, blasting your way through the remains of the Golden Gate that was collapsed to seal off the bay, dodging fire coming from Treasure Island to reach the remains of Oakland.

Because the world has bee brainwashed to believe the USA is the hub of mankind, the cradle of civilisation.

If you ask an American where Sydney is, 7 out of 10 of them will think you're asking about a chick.

Movies such as Independence Day, Cloverfield, the Marvel Superhero movies, disaster movies such as Deep Impact, Armageddon, War of the Worlds etc, all show that Aliens and malevolence in general are only attracted to the USA and only the president and Americans can save the day.

The gaming industry is big $$$, so it makes more sense to go with the masses who are happy to fight to save America, because after all, America is where all humans come from.

I live in Sydney, so I'd probably vote for an alien invasion of Prague, Deli, or Stoke-On-Trent... :)

That was actually a VERY Well-Learned decision on Bungie's part. I cringe at all the Sci-Fi games that show New York (and other American cities) having a Space Elevator (I'm looking at you Front Mission Evolved) When Kenya is one of the few countries in the world, close enough to the Equator to even support a Tethered Space Elevator supported by a Satellite in Geo-stationary Orbit. That's not Plot Armour, that's just scientifically Inaccurate. I think there were some Historical reason or it being Mombasa as well, but I forget.

OT: For better or for Worse, We are living in (speculatively, Ass-end of) the "Age of America". Every Piece of mass media has to be either ABOUT America, FOR America, or at least FRIENDLY to American sensibilities. If it isn't ANY of those, it will be "received poorly by the target audience"....which isn't true, it's just what Publishers believe for whatever reason. They never stop to think that it's actually quite insulting to propose that ALL Americans are too backwards and illiterate to know WHERE Sydney IS!

It's fucking Bullshit, yes..... but it's true.

I've been moaning for years about wanting a GTA set in Sydney. Sometimes when I'm walking around in the city I think "this would be a great setting for GTAV".

Don't be foolish, when confronted with RHD vehicles, even simulated ones, Americans go and hide under their beds. It's a scientifically proven lie.
