Is it just me or is everyone started moaning about new york always being destroyed because Yahtzee said it in his crysis 2 review?
I've been moaning for years about wanting a GTA set in Sydney. Sometimes when I'm walking around in the city I think "this would be a great setting for GTAV".
I've had similar feelings about Melbourne actually. Afterall, Melbourne is the organised crime hub of the country.

OT: It would be nice but publishers are so scared of new ideas that they honestly believe setting a catastrophe anywhere other than America, in this case New York, will cause the game to flop.

You ARE aware that Australia contains amongst the most deadliest flora and fauna on the planet yeah? For example, we have an eagle (google wedge-tailed eagle) here that hunts Dingoes (they are dogs, but think of them as Cougars that hunt in packs).

Aliens and most other countries know this. All us Aussies could just sit back, drink real beer, and watch as the invaders shit their pants in sheer terror and run screaming.

yes I know. Its one of the reasons why I would love to see a Fallout Australia. No need for an enclave, no need for a BoS. Just a bunch of poor bastards doing everything they can to survive in the god forsaken irradiated hellhole. Of the type that makes Fallout 1- New Vegas look safe.

I also like the GTA idea, though personally I would prefer a saints row style game in sydney instead.

The OP seems to be under the impression that Bondi Beach ACTUALLY looks like it does in the picture he posted. That beach is a horrible, grey sanded wasteland with green water and nasty, jagged rocks in the water. Let's not even start talking about all the cigarette butts and broken glass in the sand, either. I have never witnessed a more deplorable sight than when I went to Bondi Beach.
If you want a true example of an Australian beach, look up Surfers Paradise, QLD or ANY beach in Western Australia or North Queensland.

I thought it was rather refreshing to see London being destroyed in that Mass Effect 3 trailer for a change. New York is nice and all, but historically and culturally it's still just a gnat compared to the sort of leverage older cities can boast as significant human cities in serious need of being blown up by Alien invaders.

Sydney though... why Sydney? It's a nice city and all, I rather liked it when I visited a year or so back. Probably my favourite part of Australia, which is a bit depressing really but hell, I still enjoyed myself. Scenery and the novelty of change aside, I can think of numerous places that'd be more interesting to fight over. I do agree it would be a nice change of pace though!

Me? I'd like to either go somewhere more exotic as a setting or more historically significant. Fighting from the battlements of Hadrian's Tomb or within the vast splendour of the Vatican in Rome would be breathtaking, as would be going somewhere rarely explored such as Delhi or Santiago.

Bondi isn't like that...at least not when I went, which, granted was a few years ago.

But I agree, many gold/sunshine coast beaches are better.

It's all about the money, dude. Movies, games, you name it.

I'm thankful we still have games like Metro 2033.

Mind you, I didn't get to see much more than the first few metres of it when a bunch of lebanese guys heard my mum and me speaking Croatian and decided to run us off it with threats of violence and worse. This was when I learned that apparently the lebanese and croatians in Sydney don't get along. Thank God I live in Queensland.

I kind of agree.. Lets throw everyone a curveball and blow up mexico city. Considering its within the top 3 of largest population, and even ahead of NYC by a fair amount would make more sense.

Somehow I have to wonder if a game blew up mexico city would anyone care? (outside of those living in mexico of course.)

Good point about the beaches but i don't think aliens would be keen on invading from surfers with all the mechs and the gear they were carrying you know because they'd get dumped by the waves and drown.

Good point, and there isn't really anything worth invading on the west coast of Australia. I don't think there are any beaches at all in Melbourne, at least, none you could invade without freezing to death in the water. Sydney it is then! I'll just sit safe up here in Brisbane, no way they'll get through all the bikeys and wildlife on their way up here.

Well yeah that would tarnish your perception of a place.

It seems like the Lebs in Sydney don't like anyone much..

No ethnic group gets along with any other ethnic group in Sydney.
I don't think it's a phenomenon exclusive to Sydney.

Because If your trying to sell a game you need to make it AMERICAN.
And the main target audience for games is AMERICAN. They dont give two shits if anywhere else is blown up. They are simple minded people who only care for them selfs. and the best way to get inside their head space is to INVADE AMERICAN! again for the four hundredth time. i dont enjoy being racist to the people i game with most on online. but i really dont think Americans would care if aliens blew up the eiffel tower or say big Ben. Thats why every war game must take place in america. all characters must be american or a horribly done voice acting of any other race such as Aussie, English, Russian ect.

Being a Seventeen year old British born now living in Aussie gamer i find it quite hard to take america seriously. all it ever does is BE INVADED and if we are not in america we are in a jungle or a bloody desert city blowing up "terrorists or aliens or terrorists aliens"

But again going back to my last statement if you want to make money spend it on making it as american as possible so that way they can save there freedom! AND LIBERTY! and all that other stuff that we all have but dont take it as serious.

Now to End my rage lets all enjoy some Nyan cat

I've been thinking about a GTA game set in Berlin for quite some time, and honestly, I don't care much about games where New York is destroyed. I've been there for 2 days in my life so I'm hardly able to recognize something that I haven't also seen in countless movies. Also I'm one of those who likes games set in a world that isn't real. Seriously, there's nothing you can't do with that. Want there to be lions and ninjas in the streets? Sure.
I do agree that it's time for some change of scenery when I start knowing the streets of post-apocalyptic New York better than the streets of my home town...

Well both that and you got to admit that it's an overused cliche for a setting/venue.
