heres an idea; being a space opera, how about we blow up something actually important to the whole of civilization? who the fuck cares about new york or even earth in ME? its a human dystopia on some backwater planet that humanity left behind long ago; let it burn. why must the entirety of evil alien stories always revolve around earth? if it was so bloody interesting, i wouldnt be playing a game about traveling the galaxy would i? humanity being the butt monkey of the ME universe is really getting old; i just...dont...care...about earth. do something to the other dozen or so species in the universe already; salarian homeworld? important trade worlds? communication hubs? blow up the hanar homeworld, strike a demoralizing blow, everyone loves them!

anywhere at all but earth...and if earth anywhere other than the location of every disaster movie ever. sydney, mexico city, and unmarked slavic village...i dont care where; just not the most cliche and overused god damn place to show stuff blowing up.

This was when I learned that apparently the lebanese and croatians in Sydney don't get along.
No ethnic group gets along with any other ethnic group in Sydney.
I don't think it's a phenomenon exclusive to Sydney.
It's not but it does seem to be more out in the open in Sydney.

In one game you can destroy sydney.
One of the USA levels in Command and Conquer Generals. Liberating it from the GLA, you can destory buildings though!

Because the world has bee brainwashed to believe the USA is the hub of mankind, the cradle of civilisation.

If you ask an American where Sydney is, 7 out of 10 of them will think you're asking about a chick.

Movies such as Independence Day, Cloverfield, the Marvel Superhero movies, disaster movies such as Deep Impact, Armageddon, War of the Worlds etc, all show that Aliens and malevolence in general are only attracted to the USA and only the president and Americans can save the day.

The gaming industry is big $$$, so it makes more sense to go with the masses who are happy to fight to save America, because after all, America is where all humans come from.

I live in Sydney, so I'd probably vote for an alien invasion of Prague, Deli, or Stoke-On-Trent... :)
Taking that into account....the aliens would simply die of boredom and depression if they invaded stoke-on-trent, believe me!

I think there were some Historical reason or it being Mombasa as well, but I forget.
Under (New) Mombassa is the portal to the Ark, and the Terminals scattered throughout the game explain how The Librarian and her gang went around the galaxy taking samples of races and storing them in the Ark, so when the Halo Array was fired, they could repopulate the galaxy.

Guess which species was the Forerunners favourites? Humanity.

Guess where scientists believe the first Homo Sapiens originated from? Eastern Africa.

Thats what Bungie was going for. I love these sort of stories!

I'm more inclined to blow up somewhere like Prague. It's a beautiful place, filled with amazing architecture and you can have it two ways:hot in summer,or snowy and cold as hell in the winter.

Or Vladivostok,oh man, that would be so cool, fighting between rows of the docked Russian pacific fleet.Using a missile cruiser as HQ while aliens fly overhead.
I should write some of this shit down...

Yeah, Queensland beaches for the win! Er, hang on... *checks location* Shiiiiiiiiiiiit!

Though, I wouldn't mind seeing Syndey ruined. Because I'm from Brisbane and it's a law that we have to rag on New South Wales in this state. Until Victoria and/or its capital, Melbourne, comes into the picture... then we're united in paying them out.... until another country comes into the picture... it's a vicious cycle.

Fallout 3 was novel. You don't see Washington DC in *every* USA-gets-blown-to-bits scenario. Or (New) Las Vegas for that matter.

Yahtzee wasn't the first person to mention the fact that New York gets unfair attention from natural disasters in movies. I'd be happy enough to see Washington, or Seattle or Detroit get attention for once. I think from memory The Conduit was set in Seattle, but that was a bad game.

There's more USAliens than Australians, and setting a game in another country would confuse them. You don't go broke underestimating your target audience.

On the other hand, I did hear once about a city in the US that wasn't New York, maybe they could set games there instead.
Wow, we're really through the Looking Glass now!

NY is the hub of international commerce in the modern world. Likewise, it's one of the most well known and iconic cities in the USA, which is (technically) the most powerful military force in the world. If you were an alien capable of destroying entire cities at a time, would you go for a tactically insignificant target (no offense to Sydney, there's just little point in trying to take over a city on an island continent that would probably kill most of your invading force via angry critters), or one that would cripple both the morale and the infrastructure of not only the target nation but much of the world in one fell swoop? Likewise, if you're trying to defend the core of humanity from an alien invasion that's taking place all over the world, personal nationality aside, would you defend New York or, say, Buenos Aires?

Sure, it might be cliche. But it's cliche for a reason. Once the hub of human commerce migrates somewhere else in the world, games will be focused there. If games were being made a hundred years ago, we'd be seeing them take place in London. A hundred years before that and it'd be in Paris. Chances are pretty good that'll happen within the next fifty years at most, so don't get your panties in a bunch. Be patient and you'll probably see aliens invading Beijing before too long.

Actually, even though I'm not religious myself,I would go ahead and defend Jerusalem. What more iconic then everyone forgetting their differences and defending the place so many fought over with their lives?
Commerce is nice and all,but it's not the thing we seek refuge in when the whole world goes to hell in a handbasket.

Hmm... didn't think of that, although I might go for strategic importance rather than iconic importance in this case. New York is an island city with enough infrastructure to make survival possible even if it's in ruins; you'll be able to salvage canned food, basic medical supplies, etc. that'll be necessary to keep a fighting force in shape. There are probably better places in America to set up a coordinated defense (an actual military base comes to mind), but if you're looking to set a game somewhere people know about, it's probably better (read: easier, more recognizable, brings more feeling, etc.) to pick New York than a random base in the Rocky/Appalachian mountains that would actually make for a good hold-out position.

It all depends on the situation really,if it's a real defence, then yeah, somewhere with supplies and cultural importance makes sense. If it's a last stand, you can go ahead and skip the supplies and go all out symbolism and religious/spiritual/cultural icons. It would be a pretty natural feeling reaction in a game world:defend until you have nothing to hide behind but reassuring words.
