On a side note, what exactly do you do with all that space on a Blu-ray? Its like a massive dump for data. The movie is only so much space, and then you have a big canyon to fill. Someday there'll be more bonus features on your disk then movie.
Well the movie itself is about 4-6 times the size, then you get more interactive special features which are often of a higher quality so that takes up a fair bit of space as well.
I'm pretty sure that most of the films only use single layer discs, so that's only 25gb, quickly taken up.
One of the biggest differences for blu-ray over DVD, is the sound quality, shame I don't really have the money or the space to justify getting a good surround sound system.
Get can a decent sound system for about 100 bucks easy .
So doing maths to take advantage of Blu ray/Hd you need to pay at least 100$ for a good sound system, 400$ to 800$ for a Tv that takes the most out of Blu ray/HD and of course the Blu-ray player which costs like betewen 200$ to 300$.

Thats alot of money to watch movies with slightly sharper picture.

Yeah you dont notice it on small 1080 tvs but on the bigger ones the difference is huge. My bro has a 50-60 inch plasma. There is a huge quality gain from DVD to Bluray. We tested it on 300.

I dont think people are accepting it so quickly becuase DVD is really cheap and sufficient and movies on DVD havent been around for that long. People have still used VHS to record and still do up until some DVD recorders have become a reasonable price.

I think it's because there's actually a large majority of the world that can't tell the difference between standard and hi-def. Like my uncle. I actually sat him infront of a standard tv and my hdtv and he couldn't tell the difference. And with 1080p you can't really tell the difference between 1080p and 720p cause you'd need a tv screen at least 46".

Hd movie watching isn't cheap . It really depends on how much you use it. Me for who plays a lot games and movies it wold be worth it.{i got like 2000 dvds and around 300 games so i get my money's worth out of my tv and speaker system. If you hardly use your tv it wouldn't be worth it.

Actually...the VHS was doomed when the CD-Rom kicked in, so when the DvD showed up no one cared for the VHS.

Also not everyone hates HD or Blu Ray. Its that the differences from regular DvD to HD/Blu Ray are so "pointless" you will hardly ever miss it. Not to mention the fact to get the most out of HD and Blu Ray you need very expensive TV's.

And quick pointless trivia: The VHS only became famous cause the Porn industry choose the VHS to release its videos.
thats why the blu ray and HD companies are fighting to get huge amounts of porn onto their particular format, because it is the biggest video market on the planet, and whatever porn is made on, the rest of the world follows. good man oliviera8 for knowing about this!

also i think the price difference is too great and the jump up in quality too small for it to be a cost effective upgrade, cos you got to get your HD TV, your blu ray or HD DVD player, etc. plus if you want the 'movie theater' experience that they promise, you will need a biiiig TV (expensive), the player, and great surround sound (expensive) but most people already have the surround sound...

Yup the Porn industry is the industry that sells more in the realm of DvD and that assorted stuff.

And don't think this is fake or a something to laugh about. The Porn industry back then really did choose VHS to support their products. Which made VHS popular. If the Porn Industry went Betamax, you would have never heard about VHS.

Edit:bah double post sorry.

Too expensive, and there's apparently no discernible difference on a screen smaller than 40". And anybody who owns one of those is a douchebag with too much space and money.

Wow thats alot of DvD's and games...:p

I only my TV to make noise in the room so I won't feel alone. I watch movies in my PC.
I sometimes put in a old b movie to just hear the noise while i surf the net etc. I look over to see if anything big happened. I used to be more of dvd collector but i am leaning more towards games this last year onwards.

I think I'll just put a Blu-Ray drive in my PC eventually. I have a 28" screen and pretty much I'd just like to see what difference it makes to the picture. Am running 1920x1200 resolution atm but I guess I'll upgrade to something slightly bigger that can handle better resolutions soon.

As for HD-DVD, well, that kinda fell over. Should really buy one of the add-on ones for the 360 as they're meant to be going cheap now days.

oliveira8 makes a good point. it`s pretty much the same thing. my problem with it is it`s still a circular disk that i have to go to the store and try and find depending on availability, hop back in my car and head back home to watch it. or order it and patiently wait for it to come into the mail. when are companies going to stream in high definition? it would be nice if high definition tv`s were made with lan or wireless capabilities and an internet browser. you could have a whole library filled with movies to watch at any time for a fee. you wouldn`t have to run around collecting little plastic disks.

in comparison, what it the bandwidth of a car carrying three hd dvds?

I don' hate either one.

I have a ps3 and a 360. I don't buy movies though, so my ps3 doesn't really have a movie collection

That explains why my dad has two VHS players.

Anyway, the technology debate has gone on like this for ages. Back in the times of VHS, it was competition between VHS and Betamax, and the problem with this debate is that you can't tell what will and won't be a success. Betamax was actually better quality than VHS but VHS was more of a success. But back then there was very little competition. Nowadays, there are tonnes of companies with "outstanding new products". In gaming, we have PS3, XBox 360, Wii, DS, PSP and the computer. In film, we have DVD, Download, Blu Ray, HD DVD and films you can watch on various consoles. And in music, we have CDs, MP3s, iPods and Mobile Phones nowadays as well (Though mine's a brick so it doesn't really play music).

The reason why there is so much debate is because people pick one out of the competition and try to argue for that one. The reason why there is so much hate for Blu Ray and HD DVD is because people have had DVDs for over ten years now with very little or no competition, so it has a lot of people who support it (In almost every household nowadays you see a DVD player or something that can play DVDs).

Another reason for the hate is that as technology increases in quality, cost increases as well. A new gamecube used to cost about £120. A new Wii (Cheapest of the new generation consoles) costs about £200. If you buy a Blu Ray CD in store, it will cost almost twice as much as a DVD of the same film, and why should people have to pay the same price as a DVD for a Blu Ray CD online and then wait for it to arrive, when you could just buy a DVD from a store and walk out with it the same day? Also, not everything is compatible with Blu Ray, so you would need to get a Blu Ray player and an HD television as well, so the cost increases once again.

the only problem with Blu Ray is that you still need to be rich for it to be better then DVD. If your TV isn't HD, then your picture will look WORSE then just watching a DVD.

No real hate, just waiting for cheaper HD TVs before I get excited about it.

Nice. Personally, I put up with a crappy old TV for many years, saved my cash, waited for HDTV's to come down to a reasonable price. I have enjoyed video games for many years, and playing them in 720p or 1080p, with surround sound, is getting the best experience out of the awesome latest gen games.

Eventually, since I got a PS3, I just had to get at least one blu-ray movie, and as someone who wasn't really expecting anything that great, I must say the picture quality can be totally amazing. I don't really care that much about pic quality, and blu-ray discs are too expensive, but I always rent them when I can, and have bought a few. If they were the same price as regular DVD's I'd buy blu-ray everytime.

I see the use in them, provided you have a gigantic screen. Otherwise DVDs look no different, and you're paying extra for nothing.

And I mean a gigantic screen. Like an 80" one.

I recently bought myself a 450 euro's 32"LH3000 Full HD tv, and I must say, compared to that shitty 19" thing I had for my 360, it's one héll of an improvement. Me like HD, me likes it a lot. I can't test HD films though, since I lack a Blu Ray player. Hopefully I'll get a PS3 for that at the end of the year. In the meantime, I'm very satisfied with the improvement I made games wise, and it's worth every penny.
