I want someone to explain body modding to me.

No, I don't mean this:

I mean crap like this:

What the hell drives people to do this to themselves? Do they think it looks good or cool? Do they realize that shit like this will forever fuck up their lives, that they will never have decent employment, and that things done to this extreme cannot by undone?

I mean hell, I've seen a picture of a guy who tattooed his entire penis, and then cut it in half lengthwise so that it forked. WHY?! Why would someone do this?

Is there anyone here who can help me understand why anyone could possibly think that this is a good idea?

People are all different. These people must feel very strongly about what they are doing in order to change themselves this drastically. Don't judge. :/

It is human nature to judge everyone and everything. I judge them just the same as they would judge me.

Their body is theirs. They can do what they want with it. As to why... well, I'm sure they have their reasons. Most see it as art, self expression, or just to be different.

Subjective reasons for them will probably be outweighing the objective reasons for getting/not getting these modifications.

I'm pretty sure that its as simple as yes, they do think it looks cool. I don't really care what people want to do to themselves, it only looks so strange because it isn't normal in our society. Less extreme body modification is already pretty excepted now.

In tribes where people get those huge lip discs people don't see it as a big deal. Circumcision is body modification just the same and most Americans think its quite normal.

Well, whatever floats their boat I suppose. I just hope they'll still like their look when everything starts to wrinkle and sag with age.

I think body modders want to stand out. Unfortunately for them they will always stand out because of their modding even if they don't want to later.

When I saw the title I was thinking cyborg parts and stuff, not... this.
This is just wrong.

Honestly, I think extreme shit looks completely retarded, but it's not like you'll change their minds so why bother caring.

Both are cries of "Hey look at me, I'm special and pretend I have a huge base of disposable income."

Course society tells them to be yourself and to do that, you get a tat or piercing like everyone else. Then some need to be "Xtreame" about it. And there ya go.

It also says "Hey society, tell me to get a hair cut and a real job now! HA HA. Your norms would never hire me! I'll show you when I'm unemployed for the rest of my life haha!"

Whatever, just wash your hands.
does it really matter? I mean if someone wants to do weird things to themselves, how does it hurt you?

I know where you got those pictures from, I just saw them yesterday.

Usually people who do this 1) Have no fucking clue how badly this will destroy their lives. 2) Are already established is their community on what they do for a living, therefore they can do whatever they want to their bodies and get away with it. 3) They are already so far removed from 'normal' society mentally/socially, they just went the next step, and have enough confidence to pull it off on a daily basis.

Gross? Disturbing? Dumb? Perhaps. But if you are willing to live with the ramifications of your actions for the rest of your life without regret, then go for broke.

Personally myself, I have been working on half-sleeves (elbow to wrist) on both arms for about six years now. I'm only a 1/3 of the way there, because it is very time-consuming and expensive and I'm always talking with my tattoo artist on what step we are going to do next. I'm very proud of my tattoos, but I made sure I was well-established with my company before I started work on my arms, and I also made sure we NEVER tattoo across the wrist and onto the back of the hand. I do have to interact with some pretty important people from time to time, so its in my best interest to be able to cover up with a long sleeve shirt.

I find the piercing/skin stretching stuff overdone myself, and just see no point in it. It was all cool and edgy in the seventies, but now that counter-culture has become mainstream, its just more or less hackeneyed with no true meaning now.

Ok...the mouth and nose ones...thats GOT to be a health issue! I am all for tattoos, and piercings and all...but those two are going too far. Do I think we should force them not to? No...but they shouldnt be upset when people dont want to look at them or hire them.

My guess is they do this out of some short-sighted attempt to look unique.
Really it's just the natural progression of people's desire to mutilate themselves in an attempt to make themselves look better.
I don't really care what they do to themselves, as long as they stay away from me. I feel like if I saw that in real life it might just be unsettling enough to make me nauseous.

Some people feel they should look like this. Does it bother me? Yes, because I'm not used to looking at people that look like that. Do I for a second think there's something wrong with it? HELL NO! If I have a problem with it I look away. It's their body, they're allowed to do with it what they wish and if that's how they feel comfortable, then I support them fully.

So as to why....none of your damn business. If you don't like it, don't do it. Don't like looking at it, don't look. Go on with your own life.

My mom rang up some kid with the ear discs the other day, he only had small ones about the size of nickles. They got to talking as she was scanning his prescription (he had an infection from the ear thing) and she offhandedly mentioned that his ear lobes would never go back to their original state if he got bigger ones. The kid immediately got real worried at this cause apparently he didn't realize something like that was permanent.

Point is that I wonder how many people start getting the smaller stuff like the ear discs and don't realize what they're doing is permanent.

I respect people's right to do what they want to their bodies but that's not gonna stop me from laughing when they tell me it's to get more in touch with their tribal roots.(especially when they're whiter than a bottle of bleach)

Great. Any hope I had of good dreams has officially been ruined. Fucking Internet...

I don't get people like this either. One piercing, okay, but REALLY?
