this is like that time a few years back where some mob dudes strapped a bomb to a pizza guy and had him commit a crime or something.... unfortunately, the bomb went off killing the pizza guy. thank god this girl made it out all right.

I'm surprised she's so calm. Most people would really lose their head in panic.
I agree but the Australia media have really blown this out of proportion
I hope the local news doesn't call her too much to talk about this, her parents might have a short fuse.

well she got away safely. looks like the criminals plans went up in smoke!

Only as much as you, dude.

Unfortunately this isn't Lethal Weapon, where you can just jump into a bathtub and avoid the explosion.
only with exposed wires.. and targeted explosion even in water can still kill

This actually happened before, eerily similar. Almost copy-cat. In 2003, a 40 year old pizza man named Brian Wells made a delivery to remote television station, hours later he robbed a bank. once stopped by police he was handcuffed and forced to wait on the road. Police did not allow him to leave or move. They were supposedly waiting for a bomb squad, but may not have believed him. He was told to rob the bank or the bomb on his neck would go off. There are videos of him, calling out to the police "Why is no one coming to help me?" and other states that are just truly heart wrenching considering the police practically (granted perhaps inadvertently)killed this man. Its horrifying someone tried something eerily similar.

Surprisingly, I actually found the video not of Wells pleading with police but of the bomb going off. I cant think of a worse fate, being make to rob a bank, actually succeeding and thinking you may actually live through all this, only to be stopped by police and made to wait, minute by minute for your own death.....geez

http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/28950/ (Some caution, no gore buts it probably will upset someone)

More info on the entire case

Edit: Damn i just saw someone already mention this up the thread, but after writing all this I don't want to just delete it lol

I was all "damn, poor her".

Then I heard she was 18 and living in the one of Australia's richest suburbs. After that I was all "serves you right". I know it's illogical but I hate all rich people with extreme prejudice, especially the female teenage ones.
Yes, it only makes sense that because someone has more money than you it's good for them to get a bomb strapped to their neck and the potential to die.

Makes total sense and I applaud your total lack of compassion for another human being.
I said it was an illogical hatred, didn't I?

Btw, don't pretend you really care about her. If you do you're either deluded or lying to yourself. She's someone I'll never meet, regardless of whether she lives or dies, her death will not affect me at all so yes, I do not care about her situation and I do not care if she dies.

I wouldn't wish this kind of thing on anyone, but seeing as it has and I can't do anything about it, why should I care?
I quite agree with your way of thinking.
Sure, it's horrible that someone had a bomb strapped around their neck and were in mortal danger, but if someone dies on the far side of the world, how is it going to affect me really?

I had some family in Mosman that got evacuated today. No biggy for them but i can't imagine what this girl would be going through, I'm glad she is safe. And i thought i would be safe in Australia from terrorism.

FYI, if you don't think this is terrorism, your fucking wrong.

It's your prerogative that you don't care, but that's really shallow that you believe and say everyone is stupid about being compassionate. I genuinely care because it was undeserving to her for the sake of extortion. I care because some dickhead could strap a bomb around your neck for ANY number of reasons.

I had a friend that had her mother blown up by a Christmas present pipebomb delivered to their doorstep by a jealous ex husband. This happened before I even knew the girl.

Maybe for you to care, it may have to hit closer to home for you.
Well no shit, sherlock, of course if it happened to someone we care about we automatically would care... Now granted I don't know how the upper class treats everyone down under, but if someone reported that a bomb collar was tied to... the kardashians, Snooki, Paris Hilton, one of the smallest children of the phelps family I certainly wouldn't care about them.

but no there is no problem having empathy.

You care because it was thrown in your face and you felt sorry for her, but you don't care because you have an emotional connection to her personally, just that you have a sense of humanity. Our good fellow over there is the same initially, however where you differ is that he is willing to waver his sense of humanity in the face of social class. It has nothing to do with his lack of empathy or his lack of humanity, it has everything to do with upbringing and the way that he has been affected by the rich.

You are no better than he is because you still care. You are far more pretentious than he is, especially when you threw in the teenager argument.

BanicRhys said:
Be careful what you say. I can see halfway to your point and if I've got that much then I support it. But you got shit for your jump to the nobody cares argument, which is a losing battle from the start.

OT: Poor girl, lucky for her she's safe and sound now.

What I really care about and what I assume is part of BanicRhys' reasoning, is that it's a sick reason to do such a horrible thing. The fact that people are willing to do such horrible things to others in the name of money shows the sad state humanity is in. The other sad thing is that this happened partly because people wear their paychecks as jewelry and make sure others know how much money they have, which is why I think BanicRhys is partly right in saying it was deserved.

Of course it wasn't actually deserved, but when you flaunt steak in front of a starving lion then you deserve to get your hand bitten off.

This isn't the first time this has happened:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Wells_(bank_robber)

He claims he was abducted and had a bomb bolted around his neck and ordered to rob a bank. Police surrounded him and the bomb detonated before the bomb squad arrived where he died.

The police claim it was a hoax but why would he strap an ACTUAL LIVE BOMB to himself? Me thinks the police are incompetent and just want an excuse to close the case.

Woah, you went there. You really had to break out the pun, didn't you? You just HAD to do it, didn't you?
[sub]And you had to ninja me, didn't you?[/sub]

OT: I hope the dumb jackass that did it left fingerprints on the device hoping the explosion to erase any evidence.

If I got a bomb strapped to me I would probably hug the criminal and not let go. If I'm going I'm sure as heck taking the criminal with me!

The alleged assailant, who referred to himself only as "Father Elijah", gave a statement to police. Elijah expressed a deep seated hatred for an organization he called "NCR" as the primary motive for the incident.
