Andy McNab is good for action. I'm an old fan of the Nick Stone series.

John LeCarre is a good book if you like to think. One of the best character writers ever.

And Cormac Macarthy. Well, his books will conjure images in your head... that may give you nightmares.

The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks

Assassin stuff, with some mystery stuff, kinda.

Edit: Holy FUCK someone else has read it, and suggested it o.o Must amend my suggestion then.........

This Perfect Day by Ira Levins

Drug-enforced utopia, and breaking free of it.
i would suggest the way of shadows but im just not sure what to think of it, its a great series but it seems almost immature in the way it loves to cuss so much at times almost like a middle school child who has just heard the words for the first time, and subtlety is not that series' strongsuit, but despite all that i couldnt put them down

My biggest beef was with the completely random plot twists. In a comedy, soldier on, but this was like taking ideas out of a hat and taping them over it all, and it doesn't fit in serious things like the events of that story. I didn't finish the series, only read the one, 'cause I'm too lazy to look for the other two.

Breathers: A Zombie's Lament by S.G. Browne which is about a guy trying to get on with his life after he died and became a zombie. It's a very enjoyable book

I've seen Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman mentioned several times and Good Omens mentioned specifically by name. I'm throwing a vote in for that as well. Good Omens was absolutely hilarious... no small feat when your subject matter is the apocalypse.

Well, if you like action, violence, guns, more violence, espionage, even more violence and a Robert Ludlum/Tom Clancy style thriller, you can't miss Vertical Run or Whirlwind by Joseph R. Garber.

Anything by Matthew Reilly's good for an afternoon read of action.
Stephen King and Dean Koontz are pretty damn good as well.

Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The third is the hardest to get through but still worth it to finish the series.
