A game preluding the events of the original eragon book by a few thousand year. I already have it planned, nobody steel my idea (looks around suspiciously)

Emily Rodda's Deltora Quest series. Just the first 8 books alone would make a great video game or video game serie.

The Mack Bolan/Executioner/Stony Man series of books would more than work.

Also anything from Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series or Brad Thor's series.

Maybe even some of Dale Brown's books, provided there's plenty of aerial action to go around.

I love this one, those books are my favorite books.

I'd also like to say the rangers apprentice books, medieval era can be played as a warrior, or a ranger or a mix of both, as one character has both skills. Would be fun i think, go around as a warrior hack and slash, or a ranger stealthily trying to get from here to there.

It's been proven to work better than adapting one to a movie as The Witcher series has shown us. So what series of books or stand alone novel do you think would work best as a game?

Make sure to write what said book or series is about as well.

My vote: The Dark Tower series

Series about:
Gunslingers questing across a post apocalyptic western esque world (while occasionally traveling to different universes) in order to stop a manic demon from destroying The Dark Tower a.k.a the apex of goddamn existence. Lots of fantastical elements(demons, ancient evils, magical artifacts, prophecies, etc.) Bunch of references and cameos from other Stephen King books, plenty of action, complex characters, and quite possibly my favorite protagonist of all time.

As a game:
Red Dead Redemption meets Lord of the Rings need I say more?!... What? Well o.k. then fine... 3rd person shooter as a prequel before the fall of Gilead. Make it semi open world ala Witcher with branching story lines as different gunslingers on both sides of the conflict as they traverse In-World.

What has your vote?
Awesome when I saw this thread I was thinking the same thing! I think it would work more as a linear narrative than an open sandbox since the game would need that exploring distant lands feel. Maybe a semi open world like the game Journey for PS3.

The Wheel of Time series. There was one game some time ago covering incidents that happened before the story the books cover, but I haven't been able to play that. I also think there would be some issues with compatibility on newer operating systems.

I doubt this will be happen. A miniseries of the first book was planned in 2000, but so far there's been no news. There was talk of making a movie in 2008 and so far there has been no news on that. The game was announced to be made by Obsidian in 2010. It's also worth mentioning that the guy who wrote the series died before he managed to finish so this series seems to be cursed.

OH GOD I hope this is as amazing as it has the potential to be.

OT: I'd quite like to see an Iliad game in which you pick a Greek or Trojan hero, or maybe even a god, and then... I dunno, epic ancient-style fighting with just a flicker of the supernatural about it.
Otherwise, an actual Mogworld would be amazing.

The Dresden Files.

Protagonist is a wizard in his late thirties. Plenty of Lore and background. Wizard council, evil wizard council, all kinds of different faeries. Complex Vampire society as well as 3 different types of Vampires. Conspiracies, plots, wars, love, relationships, - Ah fuck I have to read this series again!!!
What these two guys said. I've been reading the Dresden Files for the last year, just finishing Turn Coat, and wanting more. It really is the sort of thing that'd lend itself to a game if pulled off well.

Hey! Some of the older Harry Potter games were pretty fun! I recall The Chamber of Secrets being awesome for it's sort of open world-iness. Plus, there was the Quidditch World Cup! Remember that one?
The first 3 games were different on the PC from the consoles, much worse. Stone was horrendous, Chamber and Azkaban were decent. The most competent game so far was LEGO. Quidditch World Cup could be much better, and I can't wait for a better sequel.

Imagine a Quidditch World Cup game made to work like Artemis Bridge Simulation.

Loved those games as a kid.

I pretty much agree with Wheel of Time and the Discworld MMO. Actually, a game series purely about the Watch would be amazing.

The Furies of Calderon series by Jim Butcher. It has a nice detailed world, lore and a magic system. It's kind of like a cross between ancient Rome and Digimon.

Just finished Turn Coat as well. I'd like the idea, but they'd need to make sure the magic worked well (I'm still traumatised by the Harry Potter games). If they wrote a good story and they did it well...*nerdgasm*

You know man. I love you. That's brilliant! And I'm a massive fan of The Dark Tower series. I reckon another good book would he Stephen King's Desperation. I feel that as a stealth game where you have to avoid dying while solving the mystery of the area would be great.

The Wheel of Time series would be great. Also I don't know if anyone has read it, but The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan. It would make a pretty good game, sort of like Harry Potter, but a bit more adult but also there would be a lot of stealth action if the game decides to switch to the other characters.

The question is would such games be based on the books setting, or just a page for page retread of the books story. Walking through a story I've already read would bore the crap out of me. But some books have such an amazing setting that it would be fun to run around in. Game of Thrones has been mentioned quite a bit. That book has a great setting.
