Has been done before, I suggested the Lay of Leithian. Or more specifically the story of Beren and Luthien as told in the Silmarillion.

I WOULD say a book, but as we learn from film and game cross overs, THEY DON'T WORK. I am too afraid my favorite books would be burnt before my eyes. keep them seperate please!

Big fan of these books, bought all 3 series.. I don't really know how we'll they'd translate to a game though. I can only imagine it as an Assassin's Creed style ripoff, and it really would not do them justice

The Lord of the Rings. I really wish they'd stop neglecting this fantastic series and do something with it.

True enough, but don't you ever just wonder how a book you like would be played as a game? What ever book you say, is most likely not going to be made. It's just how you would like a certain book to be played if it were a game.
Hell, I would be happy with just a free roam world from the books I mentioned, just to see them.

um dune, i know there are a million dune games however they are normlly rts games with no aknolagement of the origional books and if they do reference the books it tends to be non cannon or simply a violation to the origional story lines "ordos" anyone?
the first dune game was most true to the books but since that was released in like 1990 or something compatability wizzard normally crashes the game as soon as hakonens pop up.
also i mean in no way to criticise dune 2 godfather of nearly all rts since (unless i am wrong) and being an rts junkie without dune 2 there would be no C&C and without C&C maybe thered be no dawn of war though since dow2 is a screaming pile of bs and simplicity maybe dow shouldve been sterilised rather than allowed to reproduce.
this response was powered by dyslexia so save ur breath and words if u feel like pointing out my mistakes.

The Soul Drinkers Omnibus.

Space Marine chapter, corrupted by Chaos, still follow the Emperor, leader has Spider Legs, one member has 2 chainswords instead of hands.
Now tell me where you thought the idea was awesome.

Hells yeah. Also "Ratcatcher" (James McGee) with just the basic character used.

Alice in Wonderland.

I haven't read it, it just seems like the sort of thing that could be really interesting as a game.

American Gods and Hithciker's Guide to the Galaxy (the book's a lot better than the movie) they're both incredibly good for completely different reasons one has a compelling serious in-depth mythology storyline, whereas the other one is hilarious, though if they ever make those games, I'm sure I'd be thoroughly dissapointed as is always the case.

Also Neuromancer would probably make a great game, unfortunately I can't remember the plot really, just that it was good (awesome title too)
Hitchhiker's Guide has been made into a tremendously difficult adventure game written by Adams. Neuromancer was also made into a game but I don't believe it followed the book much.

I would love to see George R. R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series made into either a Morrowind style free roaming RPG or a Total War type of game.

thats the one with the bastard son and the "wit" right? personally that would make a terrible game, unless they made it heavy on that story with a more walk about puzzle adventure in a castle feel to it. but no game company wants to do that, they found the formula that prints money and it inolves blood and space marines.

I would like to see a oblivion style game of the Dragon riders of Pern series. That would be f'ing great.
But for god sake's do not make it a MMO.

The Pern series have such i well designed world and city setting that it would be great to walk in that world.

also the whole dragon riding part.

Anything by peter f. hamilton specifically the commonwealth saga would be awesome.
You sir are a Legend.

Can't wait for the third in the void trilogy.

Also, Ontopic, "The Witcher" was based off an awesome book-More games should take this idea because the storyline is usually already made for them, The dimwitted story creationists of today would no longer have to think too hard. Disagree with that sentance? Think about the amount of sequals we're seeing nowdays. Is it a case of the public not wanting anything new, or the devs. not being able to think about inviting stories.

In contribution to the thread, Any of the Richard Morgan series (Broken Angels, Woken Furies, Market Forces, Altered Carbon), Any of the Void Trilogy (or any of Richard F Hamiltons works).
The universe has already been setup, The pieces are ready to be played however the game simply isn't here.

Also to think about-If Grim Fandango had a book, would you read it?
