Stephen King's The Running Man
My God that would make for the best open-ended game ever. It would literally shit all over GTA and the like if done properly, and dominate the entire 'open world mayhem' market with an iron fist. The premise of the book is absolutely perfect for a game: Stay alive for 30 days whenever everyone wants you dead, if you can do that, you win... of course no one stays alive for 30 days. No one!
Personally I'm seeing it like a modern Roguelike game, where the goal isn't so much to win as it is to experiment and try to beat your own records in an incredibly open ended world. Add some rpg elements, an open world, some stealth gameplay mechanics, and you've got the perfect modern open-world premise for a game.
