Hello fellow escapists,

I was wondering if people could recommend me some books/series to read? I prefer sci-fi, but any genre is good. My favorite author is R.A. Salvatore, though i've read some threads that claim he is overrated o_O. I was thinking about reading Glen Cook's Black Company series, can anyone say if this book is worth the money or not?

EDIT: sorry meant to say sci-fi or fantasy

EDIT 2: I guess i should also mention that I have already read all the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher (a really good series), just saying this because a ton of people have recommended it (which says a lot about how good the books are)

Stephen Fry (author), Leo Tolstoy (author), Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (if that's your kind of thing), His Dark Materials, Catch 22.

I'd think of more but laziness has again overwhelmed me.

Read The Stand. IMO the best thing that Stephen King's ever written.

I'll list a few of my other favorites, in no particular order, most are sci-fi but there's some variety in there.

The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress
The October Country
Brave New World
Tunnel In The Sky
The Martian Chronicles
The Hitchhiker's Guide
Missing the Piano
Shade's Children

If you're looking for a series, the Ringworld one is great

Eragon,Eldest, and Brisinger are pretty good, as is pretty much anything from the Star Wars library.
I hope you see the similarities there.

Anyway, If you've read all of Salvatore's work(which you should) read some by Ed Greenwood, and the Undead triliogy by Richard Lee Byers. Both amazing authors.

If you can find them, Peter David's King Arthur trilogy is pretty good (Knight Life, One Knight Only and Fall of Knight).
The Stars My Destination was a fun Sci-fi book, but I doubt most fans of the genre have not read that yet.
The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides is also an interesting read, though anything but sci-fi.

Also Accelerando by Charles Stross comes highly recommended from a friend of mine is into hardcore sci-fi, but I haven't had the time to read it yet.

If you like SF, Dune is an absolute must-read. It's pretty much the Lord of the Rings of SF novels. Other than that, Niven is ok, but his science tends to take precedence over his characters, which I disliked quite a lot. Iain M. Banks is very, very good.

Other than SF, if you like fantasy, which you probably do given that you like Salvatore, then you have to read A Song of Ice and Fire. Admittedly, it is extremely long, and there are still three books yet to be released, but fantasy fiction really does not get any better than it.

They're fine as long as the plagiarism doesn't make you want to burn the damn things.

Almost anything by Terry Prachett and/or Neil Gaiman.

Jules Verns wrote some incredeble stuff. Catch 22's pretty good as well.

Fast food Nation is a cool look at American history. A History of the World in Six Glasses is also a fun look at global history from a different perspective.

For some random ones, The Simpsons and Philosophy is heavy at times, but offeres a new view into the series. A confederacy of Dunces is also good.

One of the best books I've read in a long time is 'The Digital Person' by Daniel Solove, but that's a book about personal privacy on the internet and how much data businesses can and have obtained on people.

Probably not your thing but very eye opening.
