I know that this wouldn't be too balanced, but how about gun construction? The ability to build any sort of gun from the ground up sounds appealing. Maybe not in gameplay, but as a separate "minigame".

And hey, people requesting better story: at least developers honestly admitted that story in Borderlands sucks. What did you expect from a campfire story told to some kids by an arms dealer? By the way, in the opening of the first DLC, Marcus really begins to phone it in.
Which makes it even more hilarious.

But, yeah, gun construction would be awesome. Strip apart a couple weapons you find and build a new gun from the pieces? I'm there.

no i dont mean the fire rate i mean how fast the bullet travells through the air from the gun to its target. There is ussualy a one second delay.
That also varies by weapon.

More guns please. There were not nearly enough. (Sarcasm)
A better plot would be nice. Also if it didn't take place on Pandora again that would be good to. I have been to way to many planets named Pandora lately.

Better menu, that's the biggest gripe I had with the game. The way you shop, equip, quests, it's so bloated it hurts... for a game that's supposed to be geared toward the action, there are a LOT of loading screens, forced dialog boxes, etc. I know the load screen thing is a limitation of the UT3 engine, but there are plenty of games out there that have done sandbox-style worlds forever - Most notably and relevant, Fallout 3.

I know Borderlands isn't Fallout 3, but isn't that part of the issue? It needs to try harder to really be one of the best games. As it was, I'm glad I merely pirated it as I got my requisite 6-8 hours of "I'll try it" time.

A story. And interesting characters that you actually get to interact with, rather than that MMO bullshit. They also need to make the setting seem more alive, so hopefully they'll ditch Pandora entirely and go for a buzzing city-world or something.

The gameplay worked... for the most part. The abilities/skills needed some work... they need to give a sense of progression rather than just ticking things off a checklist.

I think the plot must be improved, but as stated before. The quest system made it feel almost like a mmo. Maybe it's because I played WoW for a bit, but it felt similar. Go there and kill this big dude, or collect these parts of a weapon, etc.

So a better plot, with a few twists and turns. On the first run through make the difficulty curve less crazy. I remember being enraged at the Lost Caverns and one of the warehouse bits near the beginning(To get the key to get to Mad Mel). And a better, more well contructed quest system, rather than something ripped out of a mmo.

Oh, and while you're at it, a better menu, I felt it was pretty bad. At least on PC.

Drop gamespy: their multiplayer interface is terrible. Match making always finds mostly people 10+ levels different from you, invites to friends fail sometimes, the game does a terrible job of letting you go back and finish someone else's quests if they are behind the host.

Gameplay itself is awesomely fun, they just need to work out the multiplayer and how joining/questing works related to that.

Less repetitiveness.

That counts for everything; more variation in enemies, more variation in landscapes, more variation in missions. All you did was grind the same bastards all over again. By the time I got to the Rust Commons I was also sick of the brown junkyard aesthetic and constant Bandit spam and I just stopped playing.

Oh and for the love of the gods, improve the friggin' AI, it was pathetic.

Right now, all you can do is use it or sell it. Why not let us disassemble the guns, to Frankenstein our own ultimate kick-ass gun?

"Let's see... Take the scope from this one, the clip from this one, this one's shooting fire capabilities and voila!"
This would remove the need to make a decision about what you value more (Speed, magazine size, Damage etc.) and also remove the point of having brand names.

I do think that it would be cool to make your own gun but I think it would also detract from the game in the end.

OT: I found split screen on console to be horrific, specifically in the menu. Instead of scaling down or squishing the menu to make it fit, the ends were just cut off. Now I need to look left and right to see all of my inventory? Thanks.

Regardless, the game was fun (more so single player to be honest) and split screen is a plus regarless of the menu being half the width it was supposed to be.

One quick thing I can think of that isn't unrealistic in a Gearbox title (like story, hur hur hur) would be socketed items. Perferably in a system similiar to Hellgate London where they were items of their own with their own loot qualities and could be removed from the items. I know D2 added runes and so on with the expansion, but if my memory serves Hellgates were far more variable.

Now we all know that Borderlands equals co-op, so let's forget single player for a bit. Right: BL is insanely fun as it is. Even if they decided to make more of the same old, I would buy it and die happy. But sure there are things that are not perfect. Let's see..

GUN CREATION
Yup. Everyone would love to to see their favourite SMG shoot fiery bullets ten at a time with a clip of several hundred. Try to come up with something balanced - like a system where every modification to the weapon slightly lowers all other stats that the one just improved. That way you really couldn't have a ridiculous doomsdayweapon but had to constantly be thinking if the weapon is balanced enough as it is.

MORE SKILLS
I mean really, it's not like you have any choice in the matter. When choosing skills you had to go for the ones that were actually useful, so "freedom of choice" was quite limited. Also, 5% this or that isn't very motivational. I would like to see more stuff along the lines of Lilith's elemental finale: those fire wings were pretty damn cool. 40% better chance for elemental damage is nothing in comparison.

MORE VARIETY IN MONSTERS
I was awed when they showed me Lance engineers - I was sure I would be killing skags and the rakk for a small eternity. More different enemies with original fighting styles would greatly enchance the game. Bandits grow old slightly faster than after a few playthroughs.

LESS WASTELAND
Sure, it fits the picture. But words cannot describe the joy I felt in Old Haven or Trash Coast just to get away from the yellow sand for a few moments. Please, without sacrifising the postapocalyptic feel, add more actually different areas. The battle on top of that huge mining machine was epic, for example.

MORE CO-OP ARENA FIGHTS
Please.

Then, perhaps make it so that parts only work on guns of the same manufacturer?

I'd like a weapons customization option. I originally pre-ordered the game when the guy at GameStop told me that the game had "zillions" of weapon customization options. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but I still want a customization option. With all the options, and a second play through, it begs for it.

That's a really good idea, another option would be a point buy system similar to the system used in d&d 4th Ed. Where the cost of increaing an average stat of 10 to 11 costs 1 point but the cost of increasing 17 to the maximum stat of 18 costs (from memory) about 5 points so that increasing a 10 to an 18 costs like 12 points. This allows you to have all just above average scores, 2 decent scores and 4 average scores or say 1 really good score and the rest average.

Interplanetary travel
It would be cool if there was a solar system to explore

So, I guess I'm saying more variety and more length
