Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Some kind of protoype robot tank, very fast. In a circular area, more like the lower half of a sphere. No cover vs machine guns and rockets. Really not feeling like it...

Really wanted to make a thread for this entry, but I'm sure the subject has been covered before and my search skills came up short, so I'll throw it in here in spite of not really fitting in.

Playing through FFVIII atm, for the first time in over ten years, and recently came across a huge undead boss. Doing a no-level run so my attacks are fairly worthless and did next to no damage at all on the boss. Had been a while since I saved so I didn't feel like restarting to junction properly.
So, just as I'm about to unleash the Alexander summon with Squall(undead should be weak against holy, right?) the boss slaps a confusion on him. "FML!", I thought. "What am I gonna do now...?", I sighed.

First confusion attack starts.
Squall uses X-Potion.
"No! Not my precious X-potion!"
On the boss.
The boss dies.

The crashed ship boss from Super Metroid. I had to quit the game and rest for a while at least four times. When I did eventually beat him, I didn't have any energy tanks left and I had 6 HP. It looks like I broke my record for the lowest HP after killing a boss in this game (the previous one was Kraid with 19 HP left).

Oh right! I just remembered the gem from Golden Sun! Dullahan! Yeah... I basically used half of my 8 person party as sacrificial pawns at the start and just had them blast it with their most powerful attacks with little regard for their safety just so I could take out a chunk of its health for the other half. This guy is just a monster, especially with its Djinn Storm which causes all of the Djinn of the four party members you're using to be put into recovery mode, making you much much weaker.

I also felt this way when fighting Smithy's final form in Super Mario RPG, not only is he scary to look at, especially to a young kid, but the fight takes place in what looks like the destroyed remains of a factory from hell with this music playing.

He's also pretty hard (Or at least he was for my less experienced and younger self, I've found I can fight him much better now).

The Pupa, oh god, the Pupa. That was very nearly my "F*** this" boss playing Peace Walker. All the bosses get easier when replaying with superior weapons but on the first it is just a war of attrition. The PSP triggers' gift for bending your fingers into unnatural positions just adds to this.

OT,: Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy. The final showdown with the Mayan, or at least the action sequence immediately following. OK so I've used all my hard won lives up in a Matrix showdown with an immortal Incan priest that apparently was a natural progression from hiding murder weapons in a cafe toilet. I've pretty much exhausted my fingers and my attention for quick time events.

Now I have to hammer L1/R1 with ridiculous speed while Lucas wall runs 50 feet above the carrying a distractingly ugly kid? Now I'm dead. Restart.

F*** this. Outie 5000

Since I've found out this was the very final action sequence of the game and I wonder if knowing this at the time I'd have persevered. Since learning how the game can end. F**k that.

Cortez from Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. That boss has three phases. And just when you think you've finished him off in his third phase, he decides to suck the life out of the audience members to replenish himself.
Yeah that fight was a bastard, The whole game is made easier by specializing in Badge Points but as I had no idea that was the case that fight was a real villain. I would say that guy is the hardest boss in the game based on the level you are at. On the other hand having him team up with you right after for a cool ship battle made it all worth it!

Technically not a boss fight per se, but I was running through Solstheim in Skyrim the other day and accidentally fell into a Lovecraftian nightmare swamp-realm, then stumbled into a Dragon Priest before tripping into an entire fortress of stupidly uber Reaver pirates: I said "Give me a fucking chance!" and then ran away.

FINAL BOSS IN BLINX THE TIMESWEEPER!

I love that game, I never got to defeat the boss! I got up to his final phase once, couldn't work out how to hit him and died, got stuck on the rewind to old bosses part and ended up not finishing before the 360 came out. Compared to the rest of the bosses, a boss that could finally use time powers just like you made my jaw go all, to the floor and stuff.

Seriously though I need to play Blinx again, I love that game. It's like up there with Banjo Kazooie for me. Now when people ask me why I converted to Xbox instead of PS2 I can say Halo and Blinx fools.

Seriously though the final boss is like a disturbing black armor plated demon with a clock face.
I'm gonna have to second the last boss for Blinx. I got stuck on that boss for ages too! And if you think it's cool that he uses time controls against you, then you might find it even cooler that to beat that phase you have to counter his time controls with your own. It dazes him and you shoot him after you counter his controls.

Blinx got such a bad rap for such a good game. I don't even know why it got such average reviews, I loved everything from the art to the music to the concept.
The graphics at the time were really top notch. Also the water physics when effected by time control and stuff were really good looking. I even got shivers when the computer was doing the alert thing at the start, but I'm lame like that so I don't think that counts. A better word of putting it is I actually got really immersed in the game, for a platformer that's a pretty solid effort.

To my recollection, the final boss is probably the only final boss I gave up on for good. Considering I beat General RAAM on insane in Gears of War by myself I put it down to my inability to think tactically during a crises. lol

So that's what you had to do! I feel silly now.

I only beat one of the dragon priests in Skyrim who would one shot me with some of his spells by running out the door to heal. This only worked because I had put a mana draining bow on my companion and by the time I had healed and everything he couldn't cast back at me.

Keep in mind that Twilight Princess was the first console game I had owned (before that, I was getting some serious mileage out of my old gameboy). So when I had progressed through the game and gotten to the end of the fire temple, it really scared the shit out of me that I was going to have to fight the behemoth king of a warrior race that had been possessed to become even scarier. And the thing was on fire, and used its sheer strength to break down the chains that held it. My internal monologue was basically just "Aaah! Aaaah! Aaaah!! I can't fight this thing! It's freaking gigantic!"

Looking back, it really wasn't that bad, but the task of defeating this thing seemed damn near Herculean at the time.

Titan Hardmode from FFXIV:ARR

it's not even titan that is the problem, it's the server being INCREDIBLY unforgiving.

the FFXIV:ARR servers only check your movement 3 times a second, essentially giving everyone a constant lag of 333ms, his abilities for DPS and healers to avoid are: a 1s cast time AoE which almost always 1shots you, a 1s cast time AoE line that knocks you off the arena (and a knockoff is "you're done for the rest of the fight, you can't be rezzed"), and time bombs that you need to avoid (also 1 shots)

all of those abilities are 1s cast time (except bombs), and with the server's "lag" they are shortened to 0.666 seconds, the servers are ALL in america, so europeans all have the additional lag.

oh. and if a single player out of the 8 dies over the 8 minute fight, that's it, you're done, you won't kill him in time.

and he's needed to get your relic (ie, the requirement for the BiS weapon) and access the binding coil of bahamut (the endgame raid which is actually EASIER than titan until the last boss)

after the 30th fruitless try, I decided "fuck this" and just paid people in full BiS gear to carry me through.

anyone who is able to complete that clusterfuck of a battle, I salute you (you masochists)
Thank you, because I have the honor of one day having to heal that particular fight. I'm not looking forward to it...but the day draws closer that I'm going to if I want a shot at my ultimate weapon. I hear they are going to make the fight a little easier with the new patch...but I don't know how much easier.
in which case, to quote the Doctor: "I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry" because for healers, it gets worse.

periodically through the fight, titan will stomp the ground, damaging everyone with each stomp, and he adds more stomps as the fight goes on (creating a soft enrage), not only that, there is "Geocrush" an attack he does at certain health thresholds that deals large damage to the group (getting worse each time he does it), Earthen fury, which is MASSIVE damage to the whole group when he hits 50% (and is a raid wipe if the group fail a DPS check just before it). and finally mountain buster, which is massive damage to the tank, normally around the time he uses the stomps, we DPS just don't need to care about these mechanics because they're unavoidable damage.

I think titan is the only fight in the game where it's easier for the tanks than the DPS and healers, since he never uses weight of the land, landslide, or granite gaol on the tanks, they just have to sit there and look scary for 8 mins

I've avoided Titan so far, just because I don't think I'm good enough to heal it as my Scholar. Now with me having to actually use pet macros after the patch... it's going to take a lot of work to feel like I can handle things properly. I do know they're fixing the latency for Titan, and will be adding the Echo, so I've decided to wait.

Morgan and I are our FC's main healers, so if we kinda say no... then it's no. :p I plan on levelling other classes for a while... and I might possibly switch over to Summoner if I don't think I can continue hacking it as a Scholar. I often feel like I'm not good enough.

By the by, Adam, if you ever want to change servers, we've got most of the Escapist players with us on Malboro.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Final-Fantasy-XIV-A-Realm-Reborn Or just come and chat with us. We're mostly raging at housing prices now.

OT: I agree with Titan Hardmode in FFXIV - I haven't even tried because I just don't think I can cut it. Now that the "Extreme" versions are coming out, all I can do is laugh and say "fuck no".

"Hi! I'm Gafgarion from Final Fantasy Tactics. I'm an asshole and I'd like to duel you one-on-one. Oh, you don't have enough healing items or effective techniques to survive my attacks that regenerate my health? AND you saved before coming which means you can't back out? ...sucks to be you!"

"Know me by my best name then mortal. You face Demogorgon; Prince of Demons!"
Then I get instantly frozen and three shotted on a character that can kill dragons without taking a hit.

that fight in every game pissed me off to no end. The one in Wind Waker nearly ruined the entire game for me because unless your Cosmo, that thing is impossible to shoot without getting lucky.

In Between World I just went in with 4 faries and just soaked the damage while swinging like a mad man.

This isn't a boss battle in the usual sense, but it's labeled as such in the game, so I'm counting it.

Stage 4 in the Fight Lab in Tekken Tag 2, you have to beat three characters in a row using EXCLUSIVELY air juggles. It sounds easy, but me being the trophy whore that I am, I had to get an "S" rank on this stage. I have no idea how I eventually beat it, and I don't know how, considering in previous attempts I beat the stage in 46 seconds with all of my health intact.

Oooooooo... I HATED that guy.

Ninja Gaiden Black is full of these. Doku and Alma were bad enough, but they'll have you fight them together. The tanks that another poster mentioned already will be accompanied by soldiers and fiends. The Hell Knights would be bosses in their own right in most other games, but are simply regular enemies here that back up the real bosses, including the final boss. And there's the fire dragon with support from skeletal archers. And there's the twin worms backed up by ghost piranhas. In fact, one of the easier battles is against two clones of yourself who have hyper-fast reflexes and infinite Ninpo.

I unlocked every mission in Black, but didn't beat them all. I'm not sure I could even get that far again now.

Runescape, currently, starts out as a pretty easy game... the Kharidian Desert and Morytania excluded. You'll spend the first few hours building your crappy house, learning how to make a potato, and supplexing goblins for money.

Then you fight a boss. Any boss. You probably won't be prepared for it. For the lighthouse quest in the Fremminik Province, I had to bring a full inventory or 16 bits of bacon glued together with grease, and even then, I only survived with about 200 hit points. No, I wasn't underleveled. No, I wasn't wearing bad armour.

Jaqex likes to fuck with its fanbase. I literally just said "fuck it" with the eye of the storm quest. When I got to the boss, I was only about level 70. I had bad Strength, because I was focusing on being a Mage/Ranger hybrid kind of character, and thus, I had to use a sword I couldn't actually use well. I couldn't do it. Several attempts. Fucked it to hell. Not trying it now. Screw it.
