Sortiara from Soul Sacrifice. She was the biggest, moodiest ***** at the start and I hated her, and hated having her be my "partner" during this trial thingy. Then I learned she was scared of having to fight me at the end of the trial, dreading to kill her best friend or be killed by him. Then the moment came... Such sad, sad words during the most tragic piano piece I heard of in any fight. I tried to revive her instead of sacrifice her, but she got up and started fighting again. I never thought I'd be so heart broken to have to kill her... I hated her. Then I didn't want her to die :c Fuck that moment, man

To summarize an otherwise lengthy post that I don't have time or patience to type out; fuck you Mallet and your fucking mallet.

Am I the only one who has absolutely no qualms with murdering that big ol' dog named Sif?

More of a cat person anyway....

You heartless...

As has been stated before, Sif. After finding him in the DLC and having him fight at my side...to see the extra few seconds of cutscene really made that a heart-braking fight.

Tanaka from Kurohyou, now for most beat them up bosses they are pretty awesome to take down. But this guy...he is one disturbing ************, wears a gimp style suit with a steel codpiece and won't hesitate to use the codpiece when he counters you.

It's funny, I see NIER comments here, and hate to know that the reason it all failed to affect me was 'cause it was kinda obvious ALL of them were meant to be tearjerkers after a while. It's all tragic, but when you get the hilarious translations that's just peaches and creme it's just a bit too sappy to believe.

Basically, half of the bosses in Dark Souls, when they're all at least somewhat sympathetic. I guess it's kinda the same as NIER, but, more mature in how it does it. Much less in your face about it and lets you find out or piece it together.

There's a few others, but I can't remember them off the top of my head. But they usually go along the lines of, 'they're right', or the main characters are stupid and deserve to get their ass handed to them.

I'll even raise the ante with a video on your favorite NPC's!

To be honest, I actually think that the Templars were pretty... well, right in AC4 (well, except for the whole Observatory business).
The Colonial Lodge were pretty solidly 'good guy' templars. Idealistic and genuinely concerned with the wellbeing of humanity. It's only after they started amassing huge amounts of power (IE, when the USA started being a world powerhouse) that they started getting all mind rapey and human trafficky evil.

I'm pretty sure there's some fluff in AC4 which goes over the difference of outlook between the European/Vatican Lodges and the New World Lodges.

During the final mission of the Borderlands 2 DLC Big Game Hunt you're tasked to killing
Professor Nakayama. I felt quite sad about it since he was the most pathetic bad guy I've ever encountered. He became more and more scared the closer I got to his lair and in the end he was pissing his pants.
Luckily he fell down some stairs and killed himself.

Kreia in Kotor 2, just because she was right. I was actually disappointed that there wasn't a non-canonical ending where you agree with her and murder yourself in the Trayus Core. Too bad they rushed the ending and turned Kreia into a stupid child in the last 2 minutes with all the reason in her gone.
Haha, I agree with you, Kreia as a whole character was pretty robust.
Basically, I just went into this thread just to say what you did.

Knowing nothing about Borderlands, to me he just seemed like a silly clutz put in there to make you laugh your ass off at him. This is not the case?

Mustafa, he was a pacifist who was forced to fight against you, he wanted to help you, but if he didn't try kill you and your army, it was his wife and child that would be killed, when his soldiers wanted to leave, he would take the fall for them, he was such a good person that being forced to kill him was freaking hard.
That's made even worse when you take this excerpt

According to Ricken and Henry's B support, Mustafa would give Henry peaches whenever the latter visited him, on account of Henry reminding him of his son, and considered him part of his family.

OT: The only thing coming to mind right now is Megaman X5, where you have to fight against Zero, or vice versa.

I'm sure I could think of a better example, but nothing better is presenting itself right now.

EDIT: Just thought of more, but not necessarily a boss.

Anyone from the final stage of Bastion, the Ura. None of them really wanted to fight you, but you have to mow them down anyway.

Livia Sas Junas from FFXIV. Please defect to Eorzia! No? Then, please let me defect to The Empire!

Garuda from FFXIV. Please temper me!

Phaere Despana from Baldur's Gate 2 SoA. Maybe not technically a boss. Can't we just destroy the surface elves AND Irenicus together?!

Quelaag from Dark Souls. The real tragedy isn't guarding a grave, she's guarding the bell. Or something very near to it.

The only ones that I can think of at the top of my head at the moment are the mini-bosses from Aquaria. And while that sounds trivial, it actually means a whole lot for Naijia. Over the course of the game you come to terms with Naijia's feelings towards killing these ancient beasts without reason and making her "feel empty". Especially the crab and the worm mini-boss.

Even some of the normal bosses make me feel like I don't want to fight them. Of significance is the tree boss that gives you Tree Form upon its defeat.

Pretty much the purpose of every character in the series, but they built up for the fight for quite some time. In the beginning of the DLC he was taunting me about how he was gonna wreck me, because I killed the love of his life, then he became increasingly desperate when his traps didn't work.
Iirc he even started crying at some point. D:

Ok, I'll say it.

Angel, Handsome Jack's daughter.

I didn't want to kill her but save her from her father.

And a bit of that feeling came from Jack's pleading with you to spare her.

Had to stop playing for a little while.

Thank you voice actors for giving life to those characters.

Obviously every single boss in Demons Souls and Dark souls. It's the reason I never beat them. Some bosses I could handle and others I couldn't.

Sif and Priscilla in Dark Souls - broke my heart when Sif started to limp at the end of the fight.

Gaius in Tales of Xillia - He was right, for the good of the people of Riza Maxia his plan was the right one.
