I find it weird that Halloween costumes are supposed to be "funny" nowadays.

Whatever happened to Halloween being a holiday that celebrated fear and the things that make us afraid? People dress up like serial killers, murderous psychopaths, and monsters and that's fine, but dressing up as something that's truly scary crosses the line?

Devils and ghosts scare children, why can't adults have more adult costumes about what scares them? Why do people have to dress up as some kind of pretend evil when there's real evil in the world?
I am with you, put on a suit, carry a briefcase and tell people you are from the bank. Our figure out a good way to be student loans.

And...there will be hordes of people coming to defend it, saying that people speaking ill of her is infringing on her free speech and that there are worse things in the world.
And, of course, those people will be what we like to refer to as wrong.

The real outrage here is the fact that people are issuing death threats over her costume and harassing her and her family. It's one of those situations that makes you realise no one gives a flying fuck about freedom of speech if the speech is offending them.
And here we go: freedom of speech is nor freedom from criticism. I'm not sure why so many people struggle to understand this.

But the people who do take it to the point of harassing her and her family, or worse, are a bigger problem than her costume.

Agreed, free speach go in all direction and mean you can critisize someone who we don,t agree with theyr opinions... And yeah the harassing and all is pushing it too far... no matter if you agree with her or not....

just want to point that one too: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/buster/halloween/trayvon-zimmerman-halloween-costumes-657409

Harassment and threats are not the same as criticism.

I'm not sure why so many people struggle to understand this.

That's literally the point he was making.

I get that the costume was a bad call to post online, with the incident so fresh in everyones mind.

But who can be so stupid to put up their drivings license on the internet? Well except her -.-'

I'm laughing. The only way she could have topped this was if she was a "sexy" Boston Marathon bombing victim.

People really need to stop being so serious about the stupidest things. NSA spying? No big deal. A girl in an insensitive costume? TRAVESTY!

Because it's too real. Yes, the holiday is about fear, but the tongue-in-cheek kind of fear (at least for adults). I'm still in agreement with your argument, this is just the way I think most people experience the festivities.

It made me smile for a few seconds. Then again, I've seen my fair share of REAL fucked up shit (not some girl in costume), so it doesn't bother me all that much. If I didn't know about the Boston marathon thing, I'd assume her costume was Shitty Zombie Posing for Photo #3.

The way people reacted to it is far worse. Criticize it all you want, but I'm not sure ruining her life (for a while, anyway) is constructive criticism.

I see nothing wrong with her costume. Just as I see nothing wrong with Jimmy Savile, Hitler, 9/11 related costumes that you see fairly regularly. Maybe it's a tad "too soon" since the incident, but how soon is too soon?

Me and my wife once dressed as pedophile and young girl, we got quite a few people who complained to us, but a lot more who found it funny.

The real issue here is clearly the typical asshole-reaction of the internet.

That's fucking hilarious.

That's going on the list of future ideas (I've still got my Jimmy Saville costume kicking around somewhere).

On the one hand, mocking terrorism openly like this is one of the best ways to prove that it didn't and doesn't work. It's a bold, if tactless statement that all people can look to and draw inspiration from.

On the other hand: Fuck you, dude. Not cool. Real people being severely injured is no laughing matter, especially when one of the people was me.

To be fair, I'm more offended by her Twitter handle: "@someSKANKinMI"... Disgraceful.

On further review: The backlash to this is far out of proportion. Let the punishment fit the crime, assholes. She didn't maim you or your family, she's just dressed like you. In dressing like you, she is showing (on some level) that she wants to be as brave and strong as you are, not as stupid as those bombers were. Flip her the bird and tell her to change clothes, that's all you needed to do. Don't focus your pain and anguish at her instead of where it belongs, at the people who committed the crime. Don't threaten her life and family... or take her driver's licence and ruin her life, or steal her private pictures and circulate them on the internet, etc., etc.. Jackasses, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Boston is ashamed of you.

Is it in poor tastes? yes
Did she need death threats and all that harassment? no

When people attack those who they see as monsters, they become monsters themselves.

I may be opening myself up to scrutiny here, but I have no problem with the costume, hell, I laughed, and harassing and threatening someone over the internet, doesn't do much for the validity of one's outrage, I live in England and didn't know anyone at the Boston marathon, so this is very easy for me to dismiss or even laugh at, but even if something was offending me, I would not react with death threats and harassment, odds are I'd ignore it, and that's just what the internet should've done, keep paying attention to it and it will remain in the public (or internet) conciousness that much longer, ignore it and it will go away, it only bothers you as much as you let it

While I personally think that death threats are a bit much... the costume still is in bad taste. Did this person think they could get away with it?

I can't help but laugh at all the butt-frustration this is causing, both here and in reality. Why is everyone still so afraid of this crap? It's in the past, nothing to be done about it now. Not to mention, the more people say "too soon" the worse it gets. Just take the joke, let others live/do as they please and move on. (Barring that they're not committing the acts of terrorism themselves, mind you.)
I could arguably argue about how the more fear we put into stuff like this, the more the terrorists win. But I wont.

I guess they had assumed that people on the internet would be more rational in response to something offensive. You know, in a way that didn't involve death threats or divulging compromising pictures.

They were, of course, mistaken.
