According to both MCV:http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/next-xbox-and-ps4-set-for-biggest-ever-e3/089421
And IGN:http://games.ign.com/articles/121/1215948p1.html
Both of the next-gen consoles will be announced at this years E3.
Are you excited or wishing they waited a few more years? Personally I won't be getting PS4 for a few years, unless it's backwards compatible.
EDIT: Sony has denied any plan to show PS3 at E3 2012, saying that they plan to stick to the "10 year cycle".

It won't be backwards compatible, I'm pretty sure it won't be.

And no, I'd rather that happened later, AFTER this obsession with graphics settled down.

I'll be impressed/disappointed once they reveal the specs. It's high-time for a new console generation, but it's probably not worth buying them for a year or two until after release, as they almost certainly won't be backwards compatible.

I know! I hate this obsession with graphics over original gameplay! I think a new generation of consoles will do more damage than good, due to high production costs.

Dammit. I just wish that we could get a homogenized console someday.
Sony has already stated they won't be making that mistake again.

So what new tech can allow for much better AI? Because that's what we need more than anything.

They're overdue in my opinion. Not that I plan on buying any of them any time soon. I just look forward to having games that weren't held back by developers having to design them so that they would work on ancient technology.

The main thing I'd like to see is developers making bigger, richer worlds and keeping the current possible level of graphical fidelity. I'd love to see if Square-Enix could be persuaded to abandon their fetish for long narrow corridors and return to a better time, of world maps and actual exploration.

In before people saying it's too soon.

It's not, if anything it's overdue.

The PC platform is suffering because of it (having to lower graphics in games in order to make it cross platform), and Console gaming is suffering from having to make graphical sacrifices in order to push dated hardware to keep a consistent graphical push, such as 720p only support, lack of anti aliasing, lower res shadows, and the game playing in thirty frames, rather than sixty.

Not wanting a new systems because of financial reasons is irrelevant, you can't stop progress at the end of the day.

It's not like a new console generation will make better games. I have no problem with graphics as they are now and would much rather have more freedom. I don't know if it's a technical limitations because of hardware, or if it's because the programmers haven't quite learned how to utilize all of the software, but if it is the former I would support new consoles. If it's just for MOAR REALISTIC GRAFIX IN CoD 6358 I will hate it. Everyone knows the first few games of the console generation suck compared to the ending years. Well not that strongly, but they aren't as good.

Personally, I'm going to go with the Wii U, unless Microsoft or Sony do something remarkable. At the moment I see no reason to play on an Xbox 360 or PS3 when I can play the games with better fidelity, controls and customization on PC. Wii games, however, while somewhat hit and miss, are unique, and I won't be able to emulate the same experience on a PC (except, of course, with an emulator XD). The touch screen on the Wii U looks like it's going to bring a new level of gaming experience, whilst the Xbox 720 and PS4 (real names not confirmed) are probably just going to panda to the Call of Duty generation, or go on a terribly casual path for your mum to play on.

*sigh* I better get saving then! I might have 1 buy 2020 ...

I do think it's about time they start working on it but I don't want it to be released and I am stuck with a PS3 for years, I am really lucky I could get a PS3!

I have had all the first Playstation consoles from launch, PSX, PS2 and PS3 (the Phat PS2 broke so I got a slim PS2 aswell though). I don't want to break tradition!

It's about time. The current generation of consoles has been out for how long? 7 years? It's gone to the point where graphics have capped out and people are resorting to tricks to bring the illusion of graphical progress.

Yeah that's pretty much why I don't see the point of buying an xbox 360 right now, it would be like buying a 6 year old gaming PC.

Or better yet, just make one gaming console. Make it similar to a gaming PC in where there are NO exclusives, you can upgrade and modify it with 3rd party parts instead of making a new console altogether, just make new parts for people to install (and design the machine in a way that makes it easy & safe to install), supports all peripherals and controllers, can run any kind of game, with no retarded region locking. Just make it focused on playing games so it is easy to use.

...but THAT will never happen unfortunately *sigh*.

Bother. Unless these things come out completely backward compatible, easy save, funds, and profile transfers, and don't cost over half a month's salary, I'm not going to pick them up for a while. Or ever. My PS3 and 360 still run just fine, the graphics are fine (for me apparently), and I'm wondering if, by the time I am ready to buy them, I'll be done with gaming.

Now, if Valve went, "Yeah, and the first launch game will be Half-Life (2 Episode) 3!", then that's a whole other story. I would consider it then.

Reading some of these other posts...I didn't realize graphics were that important to some people. Is that really the sole reason you want a new console?

I'm sure I won't be getting these any time soon. And I honestly hope they claim to be in pre-production so I can feel like the shit I just bought won't be obsolete in a year. Was just getting around to trying to get a PS3 too lol. But yea, if they come our before 2014 I don't see myself investing until at least then. Just not worth it for minor graphical upgrades. Which by the way, are the LEAST important thing in any game.

Thank God Corporations don't release products based on the ability of pre-teens without jobs to purchase new products.
