Name a world leader and you'll be talking about somebody who has ended hundreds of lives over the most menial things. The people who run our nations are pretty much all mass-murderers, and they tend to be mentally competent. This is just a kid. His actions, no matter how drastic, should not end his life as well.
i love how you can explain it all away. taking two different things and putting them side by side like they are the same. what are the menial things that the world leaders are ending lives for? because i bet they are alot more important than a ps3.

and by the way, his actions were not drastic, they were damning. he killed a fellow human over a toy. i still dont see how you think that it is right to only give him 5 years in prison. that is like a slap on the wrist. if you are so insistent that we do not kill him, then how about some forced labor? i could use a couple extra trees in my yard, and i need some ditches dug, so how about it? he doesnt die, he just gets to work for me without pay for the rest of his life?

We've started wars over material goods, where thousands of people have died. We've started wars to maintain our image. You'd be surprised at how childish politicians really are. If the people who we give the right to rule can get away without any repercussions, why should one misguided kid be punished so severely?

I don't think you're familiar with the concept of restorative justice. You rehabilitate criminals, you don't make them hate society even more. A human being isn't a dog; if you slap it, it will not become more subservient. Hell, look at the whole image of violence and crime that's glorified by rap. That's a direct reaction to police oppression and the jail system.

Sad state of affairs when something so stupid can mean someone takes a life...

Kid should get life in prison for murder.

Because asking your brother to get the hell or just asking for parent intervention is THAT difficult

5 years isn't long enough for someone who would do that

...the brothers had been abandoned by their mother and spent 10 years as wards of the state before a Belgian woman named Valerie Michael took them in. She was visiting Belgium when the killing happened.
I believe this has a lot mo to do with the killing that just starting the PS3, that migth be the detonator, but the fact that they were abandoned by their family is the real problem. Anyway, it is too bad that we see another case that could be use to flame anti-gaming activists

This reminds me of a work of fiction I once read about a dude who killed his brother in ancient times because the smoke from his fire rose more nicely than his own did.

Lunatics are everywhere (in very small quantities), doing weird evil for no objective reason at all (or even a conscious subjective reason). Glad to see that it hasn't lead to another moral panic regarding video games though. Yet, at least...

poor fucked up kid.

abandoned by mom, ward of the state, killing brother.
Ah, someone I can +1. I'd rather pity the kid, rather than vilify him; journalists love sensationalist headlines, and "Kid murders brother because of PlayStation" catches your attention better than "Kid murders brother, likely had severe issues leading up to it". My money is on the PlayStation argument being the catalyst for something deeper.

This kid doesn't need jail, he needs psychiatrical help. After his sentence, he'll have at least 50 years of living with himself in front of him (if things don't get awry), I'd say that's punishment enough without making him a full-fledged criminal or drug addict in prison on top of that.
he doesnt need psychiatrical help, he needs to go to jail for life or death sentence. if he can kill over a ps3 he wont have a problem killing again for no reason.

Very well-reasoned, my friend. I'll put your name in for the next Mensa recruitment drive.

What did the older brother find his porn or something on the PS3? Otherwise this kid should be under mental health care.
Right because finding porn totally rationalises the murder.

And this is coming from someone who's mum has found his stash of porn, whilst friends of the family, including a girl I fancied was over having lunch with us, and my mum thought it would be funny to run triumphantly through the house showing everyone what she'd found.

at least there wasn't anything messed up... just lots of pictures of natalie portman fake nudes.
