You never had a crush as a kid?

Also, it pertains to the adult instructors. You couldn't be a gay BSA Scout Leader.

So are we allowed to make jokes about sashes and ascots? I don't know if I will provoke a shitstorm, but I kind of want to...
Here in the UK, we had woggles. Feel free to make your own jokes.

Is Scouting for every young man? No. I've seen that firsthand--during my time in Scouting, my troop had a number of guys drop out because it simply wasn't doing anything for them.
I was in Cubs as a kid, the junior version of the Scouts, and I - like many others - left because of the bullying and violence.

What you're touting as leadership experience seems to translate for many young men as power over those weaker. Whenever there was some crossover exercise with the older and larger Scouts, they'd beat the crap out of us. Now I'm not saying that this is the case for everyone, but certainly everyone I know who has joined the organisation at the various age brackets has experienced harassment and some degree of violence. They (and I) left not because it was doing nothing for us but because it was a fucking miserable experience. Giving the average teenage boy power over smaller children is just begging for trouble.

Fuck, guys, get it together. Still good to see.
Yeah, I am scratching my head over this too. I didn't even know it was a thing.

Weird. I always thought that all boy scouts were gay.
Now, I don't know if all boy scouts are gay, 'cos they can probably tie the knot in like 50 different ways.

So with gay people joining, will the be changing the uniform?

But in all seriousness, I am surprised that gay people weren't already in the BSA.
Technically they were. But it was a very very strict version of "don't ask, don't tell". And if their sexuallity went public in any way it was out for them. But now is all sunshire and rainbows for everyone.

/skips thread
/well, apart from the last two posts on page one

1. About time. After all, the founder was and many of the adult supervisors are (or at least were, when I was in and eventually decided to quit scouts) horrendous paedos and/or in a position to bring back copious souvenirs from Narnia, so why have one rule for them and another for the kids?
And really, when it's so much of a sausagefest in many situations, what exactly did they expect?

2. There have always been female supervisors/leaders in scouts as far as I'm aware, and they did start admitting girls in the late 90s as far as I'm aware. It was just never a popular choice (in terms of not many girls/women bothered with it; the actual scouts didn't seem too bothered either way, as it never really felt like a "boys' club" just a kids club that happened to be a bit short on female company)

3. The same people will sell "you" (I presume the question asker is American) mint cookies when all the girls join the scouts as sell the rest of the world mint cookies: the supermarket.
Srsly door to door cookie sales just aren't a thing anywhere else. Not enough of a trust relationship for a start, and in any case we expect our local charitably-minded kids club bake sale to involve things they've actually made themselves, rather than pre-packaged in a factory as GSC's appear to be nowadays.

To my knowledge they still don't allow Atheists into the Scouts, so as far as I'm concerned they're still a bunch of backwards bigots.

Maybe this means the floodgates are open, though?
Huh.... I was both a scout and an Atheist for a good two years, never was a problem. Although I do live in England where this kind of thing isn't such big deal so... /shrug

OT: Why was this not already a thing? This kind of news just makes me a little bit sad that it has taken so long.... But yay for it being fixed now and all that marlarky!

About fucking time a state funded organisation stopped discriminating based on sexual orientation. I mean it is bad enough with private clubs but they get money from the government. They letting irreligious people in too?

How would this ruin scouting? Parents afraid their precious young fragile kids will catch the gay?
I think it's the other way around - parents afraid that the gays will catch their precious young kids.

Good job everyone. To be honest I didn't know that they weren't allowed in the boyscouts. At least that's rectified now.

It's about damn time. That was one of the things that always annoyed the hell out of me when I was in scouts.

It has been a very homophobic organization for years. I remember back when I was a kid I would hear stories of Scoutmasters who had come out as gay and then were forced to quit(some in my district even) because of parents freaking out that their kids might get molested.

The BSA's close mindedness was one of the main reasons I started to lose interest with scouting after I turned 18.

So next will they allow women to join? And maybe the girl scouts will accept male members. It's a private club, can't they decide who can and can't join?
It's a private club that accepts public money. Also, they did decide who can and cannot join.

Still no fucking atheists allowed. But yeah, fuck them, go Woodcraft motherfuckers, that's what I did as a kid.

That said it changed for when my sister did it because there were different people running it and at her camps the parents just liked to go off and smoke a shitload of weed.

...would it be such a bad thing if Boy Scouts went out of business? Seriously, what relevance do they have to modern life?

All of the general skills supposedly taught by boy scouts (leadership, self-confidence, etc) can be learned in other ways...
[snip]...so who are you to say that we would be better off without the BSA?
As you can clearly see from the text you yourself quoted, I didn't say that at all. Seriously, can anyone on this board respond to my posts without making a strawman argument out of them?
Why is this site's forum so obsessed with that term?
Because we get annoyed by people who waste our time arguing against something that we never claimed?
Nah it was horrible communication on your part. It wasn't even a stretch to infer that from what you said. It's okay to apologize for it and clarify, it doesn't always have to be the other person's fault. Misinterpretation is not a strawman, this word does not mean what you think it means. Stop.
