Breaking up by email, text message, or otherwise without face-to-face contact is either cowardly (if you don't have the balls to tell it to their face) or the ultimate "fuck you, this relationship was a waste of time" way to make an enemy for life (or, depending on just how much she had invested in the relationship emotionally, a stalker/killer/psycho chick.)

I've never been in a relationship, nor do I ever intend to be, but I would assume women dislike impersonal break-ups because they cannot kick you in the gonads immidiately after upsetting them.

Oh yes. Dear god...

I broke up with a guy over text messages once. Biggest mistake I made (besides the relationship itself)... he went all high-school-drama-club on me and my roommates.

If you can, break up with the person face-to-face. It's just the right thing to do. If you can't (distance prohibiting this, etc) do it some way that they'll know they meant something to you.
