I was quite upset about this not just because you cant play as a girl online/offline but more so of this statement

'Doing a quick search of the Splash Damage message boards, a few of the threads feature "official" responses which basically state that the developers (allegedly) had a choice between having in-depth customization options for male characters, or having less options for both male and female. In the circumstance described, female avatars got the ax.' ------ Brad Gallaway

Couldnt the dev's just take a little more time with it i understand the whole budget thing but that just seems weird.

What are your thought on this Article?

PS: I do hope this changes but with the news i doubt it will. Unless the game devs release it as DLC or a Patch or something.

Well yea that sucks. But in all honesty wouldn't you rather them take out the ability to be female for budget reasons then say something that could ruin the game completely?

People should stop caring whether or not the character they play is male or female. If a game has a male lead, I'll play it. If a game has a female lead, I'll play it. If someone refuses to play a game based on it not being one or the other, they are just plain ridiculous.

I remember a girl in my gym class at school said she would only play Heavnly Sword and not God of War because of the female lead in Heavnly.

It doesn't bother me.

But I swear if there's a "Girl Power" DLC down the road. I'm going to shoot myself.

Though it would be interesting to see how a shooter would fair in the market if it's multiplayer only had/started with female avatars.

(With a nice appeal of graphics, weapons, settings and etc. So it isn't a generic shooter.)

Crackdown suffered from the same issues that I can see with Brink in regards to female characters. How do you handle big characters? In Crackdown, you level up to be a huuuuge 9 foot tall behemoth that makes Arnold Schwarzenegger look like a pansy, but it's cool because they just make him unfeasibly muscular. With a woman you either make her incredibly muscular or bulky and result in having ugly freaks for girls (remember what being evil and being a female was like in Fable?) or you make them big boobed, weird proportioned females that video games have been bogged down with for years now. How to you make a heavy customizable female?

Now I can certainly understand the realities of operating under a budget and the drive to turn out the best product possible, but I have to admit that there's something very disturbing to me about having a choice between fifty different pieces of upper torso clothing or including an entire gender, and then deciding to go with the clothing.
Sums it up right there.

They'll just chalk it up to "bad press is good press" I'm sure.[footnote]And likely get sued or be forced to merge with another company after someone whines too loudly about it in court[/footnote]

I'd never even HEARD of the game prior to this, so it's not like I'd be one of the potential females turned away by the lack of jiggly bewbs in a flak jacket. *shrug*

They could always add female characters afterwords. The problem with having both genders is not only do you have to skin them, but you have to motion cap them. Girls run, walk, and react differently than guys, and you gotta do voices, if only just sound effects, and then do all the different skins and customization options that all react properly to their movements. So I can understand them only focusing on one gender, but I agree that they should have just taken longer and maybe had fewer options. Then, later on, add more options for each gender.

Did she play Heavenly Sword? How about Bayonetta? Does she look like those women? Is she that kind of person? If so, she either has some horrible disease or she has had way too much surgery. I am a male who will play as anything, a man, a woman, a dog, a robot, an omnipotent invisible being represented by a cursor... Why do we need characters to be a certain something in order to play them?

I think your friend is being a little silly.

On topic: Honestly, I don't care if they only have male characters. I know some girls who would be offended, but then I think gender issues get blown out of proportion.

Yes, we do treat the sexes differently; and yes, we should. If I say to a male friend: "Come stay the night, have some beers, it'll be awesome," he'll do it no questions asked. If I say the same to a female mate, she may think I'm trying to encourage a relationship with her, so I need to phrase my invite accordingly.

Men and women are different. Treat people like people, but be aware of differences.

(At no point do I intend to indicate that one sex is inferior to the other. If I have, then I apologise as, clearly, that is not the case.)

I preffere to play as female characters, since the males are always the standard lump of muscles. It'd suck if they do add females as DLC you have to pay for. How's that for fun, you need to pay more just to have a gender fittings yours.

Normally I would just ignore and get the game, and I still will, but I just NKOW they're going to make a "Female Options" DLC costume pack or something like that...

Creating character animations is hard and expensive, especially with all the parkour stuff in Brink. So far, they have three basic animations: one for the light, medium, and heavy build characters. Adding the female option would mean they would have to redesign all three animations. This takes a lot of time and money, whereas adding character customization, which is just changing an avatar's skin, is relatively cheap. Not to mention that things like "many customization options" tend to add to a game's review score. The more this decision is inspected, the more it makes sense. Obviously, I would much rather see the option to play as female implemented than not, but sacrifices have to be made.

Crying "sexism!" in regards to a form of entertainment that is overwhelmingly consumed by males is a bit silly. I realize in a perfect world you'd have male and female player characters, but the decision to cut the girls for budgetary reasons is completely reasonable, when you take into account the fact that the overwhelming majority of the people who play this game are going to be male.

As an aside, does anyone have a link to any sort of statistics on the gender breakdown of serious gamers? Or gender breakdown of gamers by genre?
