I'm just curious as to how Brink became so popular. I really am not trying to bash the game; I hardly know anything about it. It just seems that the last time I looked at it, it appeared to be a simplistic TF2 knockoff without any unique features or distinguishing aspects. I've tried a few cursory searches to find anything that would dispute that assumption, but have had no luck. What is there about it that I don't know that seems to have people so hyped about it? I may be interested in getting it if you can explain why it's worth it to me.

EDIT: OH MY GOD, people! I wasn't calling it a TF2 knockoff. I was saying that, based on my ignorant viewpoint, it looked like one. I was asking you to enlighten me. And yes, while I know that not every class-based shooter is a TF2 ripoff, not by a longshot, there have been games nearly identical to it that have come out before- Toy Wars, Lead and Gold, and Global Agenda (Hell, these guys even admitted to being essentially a TF2 MMO). Lay off me.
Im a little curious about where you have been searching to not find anything that would explain the game to you. The most prom ant thing is S.M.A.R.T. or Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain, which is basically a parkour button, allowing much more movement options than any FPS (save maybe Mirror's Edge) on the market, at least that I know of.

It's the same genre of game as TF2, without a doubt. But that's where the similarity ends. First, there's the way scoring is done. You don't just get points for killing enemies; in fact, killing enemies gives the least amount of points. You get much more by helping teammates in whatever way your class is able to. It also seems like the game is a lot more team objective-based in multiplayer than most FPS games. Lone-wolf tactics won't be used because the people who use them won't level up.

Plus there's the fact that the game was built around the running/climbing mechanic. Different classes move differently, and I think strategic positioning is going to be a big part of gameplay. And you can change your class and loadout at special locations while a match is in progress.

Also, there's apparently a huge depth of character customization. Not just appearance, but also weapon add-ons and configurations, and so on.

It crosses a lot of elements I like in an FPS.

1)Class-based
2)Map-Based Missions
3)Customization
4)Stand-out art style
5)A fresh story/plot (can't guarantee it will execute well, of course)

And the introduction of weight classes and the SMART system just makes it appeal to me as a game I don't wanna miss.

Is it already out? Huh...
Comes out on the 10th.

What I'm interested in is that it's multiplayer has a story, a deep story by the sounds of it, and it is an RPG.

Immersive, narrative driven, thought provoking multiplayer.

What other game has that?

The main thing for me is the movement. After playing Mirror's Edge I have a hard time playing other FPS games. Half Life 2 was really challenging for me, and Left 4 Dead gives me some fits too. Brink will give me the FPS experience I want.

I suppose the heavy customisation is appealing to the same people who were interested in APB. It's not such a big deal to me, but I'm sure I'll play with it.

Another thing is that it's multiplayer/single player in one like Unreal Tournament, which is still among my all time favourite games, and is also the only pre Mirror's Edge FPS that I can still play without getting fits.

Brink is looking to be (for me anyhow) a great game, whether it be multiplayer or single player. The amount of customization is amazing, the introduction of S.M.A.R.T. is intriguing and hopefully will provide an experience that will differ from most other FPS's on the market. With all that it's bringing to the table, Brink deserves all the hype that it recieves.

These two have hit the nail squarely on the head. I simply can't think of anything else to add.

It's got a more fluid movement system that reacts to the environment in intelligent ways, allowing a lot more mobility and climbing. Note that the lighter characters/classes can jump farther/higher and have more mobility, though of course less survivability.

You also have dynamically generated objectives that steer players into cooperation by offering incentives for doing the right thing. Accomplishing map objectives, switching to unused classes, etc. At any time, a player can check objectives and assist in victory, even players that typically act on their own.

There's also the character customization and outfitting that gives a sense of progression while playing. All of this is within a story that can be played offline or online with human opponents instead of AI. Overall, it's not a revolution in FPS gaming, but it's certainly looks to be a fun and exciting offering for those that enjoy class-based shooters (*raises hand*). For some, these features may seem uninteresting, but many people are really looking forward to what it's bringing to the table, hence the hype.

Can't say I see the comparison between Brink and TF2. Last time I checked TF2 was nothing more than a class based online only FPS; A kiddy counterstrike with roles.

I mean really does nobody who makes that comparison notice that the only similarities are "Similar art style - Class based - FPS"? Class based games aren't new, cell shading isn't new, FPS's aren't new.

Does TF2 have multi-objective based gameplay? No.
Is there a huge customization option in Tf2? Characters? No. Guns? No.
Is there a free-running element in TF2? No.
Is there a story in Tf2? Not particularly. And what little there is? All of it occurs outside of the gameplay.

People are looking forward to this game because it has some interesting mechanics and, though it is a multiplayer FPS, its geared towards teamwork rather than being a lone wolf or camper.
I read that and impulse bought the game :] I've got finals coming up, damn you XD

Obvious TF2 clone+Console+hype=Profit. <---Easy money maker.
I don't remember Team Fortress 2 being the first team, class based shooter. Nor do I remember it being overtly violent beyond cartoonish blood spatters. Is it the presence of parkour type movement through large, complex environments? No, so. TF2 didn't have that. I'm stumped! Or maybe you just consider any games that share an idea (team based combat) to be obvious clones? Oh dear... That is odd.

Also - easy? I wish I had your skill. If making a game that took a team of developers, artists and programmers years to complete was "Easy," I'd be a very rich girl! For that I envy you.
