So two days ago I bought Brink and I think it's a great game across the board. Well, as long as everything works. As you may know it is plagued with bugs and glitches and overall is just unpolished. What I want to ask is that after a few patches, a little bit of AI tweaking (not needed for those only using multiplayer), and getting their server's shit together so that 16 player games are possible again without the debilitating amount of lag do you think that Brink will be able to contend with say TF2 or some other class/objective based shooter?

Project Reality is pretty cool. 128 players games on huge maps.

*googles Brink*

Oh that. Wont stand a change. The next MP shooter will wipe the floor with it.

By the time Brink gets patched to playable levels it's likely that most of its fan base will have left due to the fact that people are very finicky and because first impressions count. This game needed to have been delayed for additional development time, if Brink 2 is this unpolished I'm going to snap my freaking disk in half.

Play the game before passing judgement please. Many of the negative reviews are bug based

Honestly, the entire game felt like a 15 dollar XBLA title. The campaign was almost non existent, the AI was god awful, and the multiplayer, in its current state, was unplayable.

Fortunately, thanks to amazon credit and returning the game 3 days after I got it, I did only spend $15 on it! Thanks, amazon!

I think Brink 2 will be an excellent contender. Brink, however will probably eventually drop out. It'll take a couple months, sure, but it will. Brink suffers from lagging textures and a pretty limited weapon supply. Really, no sniper rifles? Also, the matchmaking is terrible and it commonly lags. A lot.

Parkour is cool but isn't enough to keep a game going for much longer than 5-6 months.

That's the problem, they are bug based. I really didn't think I was going to like it because when I saw gameplay videos of it because all I saw was another "realistic" shooter with slow movement speed, ADS and really quick kills, but when I played it I could mostly put those aspects past me.

And the really weird part was that I was having fun, when it worked.

Um, there are sniper rifles. They're the light rifles. You just have to put scopes on them.
Honestly, I'm pissed that the bolt action short rifle is so freaking powerful with a level 2 buff, it's usable at close range as well and is better than the lol worthy shotguns.

It's hard to say if it'll stand the test of time. It came out with a lot of flaws and a fairly limited amount of content for a $60 game. I had already played every mission (most of which are the same couple of objectives on different maps) by the time it had been out for just one day. I realize that they'll be releasing the first DLC maps for free, but I have some friends who were already talking about selling it back by the time it had been out two days because the gameplay was already becoming somewhat stale and repetitive.

To top that off, the one thing which could have kept it fresh, the online multiplayer, was laggy to the point of being nearly unplayable, and their "fix" for that problem was to limit the number of human players each team could have. That's not a good solution, and it's coming on top of a really bad first impression.

I get the feeling that whether or not the game will last depends in large part upon how they handle the first DLC. If it adds enough to keep the game fun, then it just might make it, but if it doesn't I suspect that Brink will ultimately fade into obscurity.

No, those are weak, semi auto pieces of crap. I want a bolt action, powerful sniper.
Brink has a bolt action sniper rifle which can basically one shot anything provided it's buffed at any range.

That's another issue, the amount of content in Brink almost makes it worthy of being an XBLA game. 8 maps? What?

There is. It's the one that's right under the Dragunov Light Rifle. The name escapes me, but it's a good sniper rifle, and I use it to countersnipe when my SMG just doesn't have the range or kick. I really like it, even if it's only 4 rounds to a clip, if you're good with it, it only takes one shot a person.

OT: I like Brink and will likely play it for a good long time. Online multiplayer ran much more smoothly today on the PSN than it did yesterday. There's supposed to be a free DLC thing coming out to fix some of the lag, add some new maps, and some other stuff coming in June or July I think. I read it somewhere here on the Escapist if I recall.

which will be?
.....

Exactly given its a market nobody is making games in (team based mp) its only competitor as is is tf2, and its graphically superior to that, and enoguh gameplay differences exist to differentiate the two.

Anyway OT
yeah if they keep patching and fixing it , it will be a force to be reckoned with, as is its hit or miss playable, (shame because i love it)
I agree with you. And seeing as the console version of the orange box is a joke It's really the only experience like TF2 that is going to be on consoles, currently anyway. I loved TF2 but my computer is crap so I can't even play that on it. So I think having a very similar, maybe better because there is more maps and special abilities are the only thing that classes effect a player, experience to TF2 on my xbox is very nice

Remember MAG? No? thats cuz it was terrible. and it was 128 players on huge maps. How about Planet Side? Even bigger, with a whole solar system to fight in. I hope Project reality is awesome, but I have my doubts.

From the looks of it after reading these posts, Brink will be a memory in a fairly short time. Pretty sure most people are using it as a stepping stone anyways until MW 3 and BF 3 come out, but if its that buggy and unpolished then don't think it will even last that long.

Okay, there IS a sniper rifle. You have to do a two star challenge for it, and it typically kills in 2 shots to the chest, 1 to the head. And it is bolt action.

As long as they keep fixing it, it should be fine, but when I played it it just felt, insufficient, well actually I described it as "a retarded monkey", not because it was really bad, but it just didn't always do things in a way that i understood. The AI is not brilliant, and the parkour wasn't really enjoyable as I'd hoped, but with a few patches, I will buy it for myself at some point.(I played it at my friends house, so I look forward to finding out more about the PC version)

Versus what is out there, yeah it stands out as something different. I'm still getting it. The continued work from Splash Damage and free DLC that they promised should keep the longevity up for awhile. Might turn into a cult game, depends on if Splash Damage keeps working at it to polish it up.
