Monty Python's Flying Circus and Eddie Izzard are the most entertaining for me. I'd rather see them then most of the comedy around here.

I recommend that you watch a show called Father Ted, it's about 3 Irish priests, fucking hilarious. PM me if you want the link to a website to watch them.
Watched all three series of Father Ted last 3 days. Channel 4 on-demand is AWESOME. It's just genius. Also, you'll never stop saying FECK instead of FUCK.
Indeed, I never say 'fuck' anymore, just 'feck', which isn't actually a swear word apparently. It derives from 'feckless' which means 'work-shy or lazy'. Although it is used as the aforementioned expletive.

Hell YES it does.

Blackadder, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Allo Allo, Are You Being Served?, Two Ronnies, Grace and Favor, To The Manor Born, and Oh, Brother! - I love them all.

And for some reason, I still haven't seen Dad's Army.

Charlie... Motherfunking... Brooker.
Did you watch his Gameswipe episode? That section on 50 Cent's crystal skull or whatever it's called? That was truly hilarious.
Hmm, you don't say?

Not bad.

This does remind me of one British comedy I saw lately (if only because they're both under the gigantic umbrella of Britihs comedy) and that is the "Look Around You" series:

Made in 2002 - 2005, by the way. A satire of old time shows in much the same Garth Marenghi's Darkplace was.

I'm American, but I've lived in England for three months. I love the shows The IT Crowd, Spaced, Blackadder, stuff like that. Didn't really like the weird game-show type shows though. Where panels sat around answering questions and generally went nowhere. Can't think of any names off the top of my head though.

Love British comedy so long as it isn't to native if you get my meaning.

It seems to me American comedy is to much screaming and cussing... i prefer the refined approach.
It can seem that way, but its because of the output- America probably has the same percentage of shit comedy as England (Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps, Dinner ladies etc.- we drop bollocks too whether we admit it or not). America has some top comedy that is easily in the same league as our stuff- Curb your Enthusiasm, The Onion, The Simpsons, Southpark and the like.

I love all of Monty Python. Aside from that, Ricky Gervais is fucking brilliant, as is the UK version of "The Office". And I know I've mentioned Monty Python already, but John Cleese has my vote for "Funniest S.O.B. on the Planet". Has anybody seen the special "John Cleese's Personal Best"? He sets the show up as if he'd died. It had me searching the internet to make sure he wasn't really dead.

conversely, as a british person i can say that my favourite comedian was Bill Hicks, but he was bigger in the UK. strange how the more thoughtful US comedians tend to move over here.

reginald d. hunter is hilarious, and should be on Tv solo a bit more

Ha, I thought it was just the show trying to get away with swearing a lot without getting censored.

Ricky Gervis gets my vote he is so funny and I just love the guy. He rocks.
You can have him, I don't think he's funny at all. In fact I find him very offensive. He's the overweight class clown who everyone laughs at because they think he'll go away. I cringe everytime I see him on TV or in a film, because he has no acting abillity what so ever, I mean christ I'll admit Orlando Bloom has more acting talent that him and he's as good as a plank of wood in a burning building. /rant

I also never found ANY female stand up to be actually any good, nevermind the country (and i do like women a lot) they just have no humor.
There's a few good ones about, but also a few really naff ones.

On the good side: Lucy Porter, Meera Syral, Jan Ravens, Jo Brand (sometimes), Victoria Wood, Prunella Scales, Connie Booth, Arabella Weir, Jennifer Saunders, Fiona Allen, Doon Mackichan, Sally Phillips, Pauline Mclynn, Kathy Burke, Hattie Jacques, Julia Salwaha, Joanna Lumley, June Whitfield, Miranda Richardson, Julie Walters.

None of them?
tbh, French (who you didn't mention, but I guess she's not so much stand-up) and Saunders kind of make up for everything. Plus Victoria Wood.

Black Adder.
/thread.

Also, I think British comedy is very representative of our attitude. Sarcastic, witty and sometimes so subtle that it leaves other countries baffled.
With a dash of absolute absurdity. It really is the best around.

I'm from Australia, I watch more British comedy than anything else, mainly via Teh Interwebz. David Mitchell is a god, QI is one of the best shows ever, I've just been getting into Charlie Brooker, also a god (and a great source of inspiration for Yahtzee, I believe). Other favourites include Bill Bailey, Frankie Boyle, Rob Brydon, Jimmy Carr, Jo Brand, Phil Jupitus, Dara O'Briain, Russel Howard, the guys from Top Gear (especially James May), Sean Locke, David Mitchell's mate Robert Webb, Lee Mack, and the list goes on. And their just the more modern ones that I mainly know from panel shows such as the aforementioned QI, and Mock the Week, Would I Lie to You, stuff like that.

Then of course there's the classic shows and comedians, Fry and Laurie, Young Ones, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Monty Python, Ab Fab, Black Books, League of Gentlemen.

And after listing all that, I've got to ask myself, do British people know how lucky they are to live amongst such a smorgasbord of top class comedy?

Coupling I could have done without.
Was that the british version, which was funny as hell, or the shitty scourge produced on the other side of the Atlantic? I'm just curious...

I'm guessing you're referring to shows like QI, Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week etc?
