Mr Bean and Monty Python, i guess.

Also, I think British comedy is very representative of our attitude. Sarcastic, witty and sometimes so subtle that it leaves other countries baffled.
And arrogant as hell, i must say.
We don't have much to be arrogant about. You've gotta' be arrogant about something.

I'm really not at all a fan. I much prefer someone like Ross Noble who has such a quick mind that you never know where it is going to take you. I do like him more than Michael McIntyre though. That man is [b/]not[/b] at all funny in my opinion.

Actually, I'm British and I always think I watch lots more American TV; I get the newest episodes of The Simpsons from the US, Family Guy, Cleveland Show, Scrubs and non-comedy shows like Dexter and Heroes. That said, I do watch a fair bit of British comedy and I don't even think about it. I have started my Red Dwarf collection, got the Blackadder boxset, Spaced, Fawlty Towers, love Black Books and other stuff like Doctor Who, Skins and Misfits.

I don't know why I always think of the American shows first though =/

As far as comedians go- Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey, Billy Conolley, Stephen K Amos, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Alan Davies, Sean Lock, Omid Djalili, Dara O Briain,.. sooo many more.
As far as shows- Fawlty Towers, Black Books, QI (my personal favourite because of the tumultuously great casts on each episode), A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, Blackadder (all of them), Monty Python, Nevermind the Buzzcocks.
You, sir have taken exactly what I wanted to say. Im Australian but live in the UK and find british comedy to be the best going. Frankie Boyle is really good too (though not for the easily offended).

I know I'm British so my opinion isn't really asked for but I think that we do have some of the best in the world. Blackadder, Spaced, IT Crowd, Black Books, Farther Ted, The Mighty Boosh, Monty Python. The list goes on.

However, we do have some utter dross. For example, My Family is still going! Then we've got Little Britain (first series excluded) and Catherine Tate as well as load of other crap for which the names have unsurprisingly escaped me.

Well, Monty Python obviously.

I've also yet to see something with Simon Pegg in it that I didn't like, and say what you will but I do enjoy the occasional episode of Last of the Summer Wine for some reason.[footnote]Being that I'm a 22 year old American I would say I'm pretty damn far outside of that shows target demographic...[/footnote] I've seen some Blackadder but not enough to have an opinion one way or another, but I do plan to watch more. Red Dwarf is always a classic also...
Holy cow, I'm amazed that anyone outside of the UK has even heard of the Last of the Summer Wine... Personally I don't like it so much but thats because when I was young it was part of a very boring stretch of Sunday afternoon programs you were forced to watch along the lines of the Antiques Roadshow ("how much do you think its worth?"), Bullseye ("you get nothing for two in a bed"), the Fashion Show or the House of Eliot or something equally coma-inducing.

Man, before the internet was like living in the dark ages...

Reeves and Mortimer, Garth Merenghi's Dark place, Doctor Terrible's house of horrible, Saxondale(which I guess is funnier because I see myself in him in spades, that and he is unusual in that he is neither a total idiot or a complete looser!) The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Alan partridge, The peter serafinowich show.

Anything with Steve Coogan the man is a god, nothing with Ricky Gervaise I absolutely hate his talentless gurning and mugging, about as amusing as typhoid but hey that's just my opinion!

Bill Bailey and Dara Obrien (I hope I have spelt his name correctly as I've seen him live four times its a tad embarrasing if I havent!

The Day to Day, Brass eye, (because fact into doubt wont go!)

I recommend that you watch a show called Father Ted, it's about 3 Irish priests, fucking hilarious. PM me if you want the link to a website to watch them.
Reference to father ted, should that be fecking hilarious??
Yes, of course, how could I be so fucking stupid! No, I mean fecking, how could I be so fecking stupid!?

I was wondering what (if any) British comedies/comedians appeal to people from other countries. It is hard to get an idea of how comedy is judged in other countries. i am a fan of Scrubs, Family Guy, Archer and House (not really a comedy but very funny and also has Hugh Laurie an English comic great). As far as comedians go I don't really enjoy any American based ones but do have a bit of a soft spot for American's based here (Rich Hall, Reginald D Hunter etc)

Anyway, just wondering if things like Green Wing, Black Books, Blackadder, Spaced, Ross Nobel, Dylan Moran etc are liked elsewhere?
Brittish comedy is the best man! Im an aussie and I love it. Black Books is fucking hilarious, and Black Adder is very good aswell.

The best comedian is Eddie Izzard. If you havn't herd of him, youtube him NOW. I garrentee you will not regret it. John Cleese is freaking funny too.

Anyway, comedy wise, Brittish stuff is generally better than American stuff. (tho I am a big fan of family guy, scrubs, american dad etc)

Love British comedy, in books and in television. My favorites are Red Dwarf, Coupling and Flying Circus. I have Black Books and Spaced on my Netflix queue, but it says long wait! Boo! From this list I am adding Father Ted for sure.

Our comedy is just amazing, to make up for how shit a lot of the reality of Britain. Most of the stand-up is describing how shit stuff is.

Dara O'Brien, Fry and Laurie, the Top Gear team, Rowan Atkinson, Monty Python, Bill Bailey, Sean Locke, French and Saunders, Rik Mayall&Adrian Edmonson... Everyone but Gervais, pretty much, is a comedic genius.

That said, I have seen some American comedians that have been brilliantly subversive and just as entertaining as our best. Rick Hall, Reginald Hunter and Bill Hicks, all already mentionned granted, are brilliant. The first two, though, seem to have adopted the British style above anything else.

If you want to see something wonderful, follow this link and watch the entire episode (it's in 5-minute chunks): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5__VFxOI99E
