I think we ought to make a post awesome college kid recipes thread.

I remember my Freshman year when i had a frige but not stove i figured out that you can boil eggs in a hotpot (it just takes about 30 min) and then add said eggs to tuna salad. My stuff was better than the caf's by far, but then again i am kind of a dorm gourmet.

Cheese and spinach pie.
I'd never heard of this so I looked it up. Do you use egg in yours so it's more of a quiche or is it more heavily cheese based? Either way, I think I'll have an experiment in the kitchen tomorrow night!

My personal broke food is cheese tortellini. You can get a 3 pound bag of them frozen for like 7 dollars. Add a little olive oil, red pepper, and crushed garlic and you've got an awesome meal that takes literally as long as it takes to boil water.

It's when they don't boil off properly and they just stay really, really soggy. Ugh.
Bad mojo jojo, I'll take my nuked to perfection.
I could eat bowls of them all day, guess I'm a cheap date then xD

Definitely no garlic, no. Just no.

*wafts thread idea*
I have given you the dough O'Bakie wan Cooknobie, run wild.
Ugh...damn sogginess, kicking the kitchen door in and ruining good noodles. So I'll definitely stick to my microwave. Yum~
And what's wrong with that? XD A bowl of Super Noodles beats expensive Duck Patte' any day![sub]Fuck, I should write the slogans for them, get me their number![/sub]

Ah, that might just be me then. *Chuckles* But yeah, chicken or even beef stock and, Mwah!

...I shall do so, my master. But when I have a clear head after a night of rest. I shall PM you my result.

Cheap College Food = Awesome College Food :)

In college I lived in a top floor apartment with a crappy stove and a 5 ft shower... I'm 6'4, 200 lbs... so both sucked almost equally.

When cash was extra tight, out came the Bologna, bread and Foreman Grill.... I ate alot of fried bologna sandwhiches that year lol.

Okay I never went to uni but I'm a master at cheap eats, from teaching my friends had to actually buy groceries and cook, and explaining that it is much much cheaper then fast food or meal packs.

Prices are in AUD, because I have no clue what food costs in other nations, nor do I care to look it up.

First off, general tips, don't buy meal packs, that means Kraft Mac and Cheese type stuff. If you've got to buy food in tins or packets, buy in bulk when things are on sale and store them.

You'll want a freezer, or access to one, because a lot of these meals are only economical when made in bulk and stored. To that end you'll want a set of decent, but cheap, plastic freezer containers.

First off my personal favourite, given I use to make this about 5 times a month for my friends when they were piss broke... cheap fried rice!

First off, buy a bag of rice. Yes a bag. Not a box. A big old cloth bag of rice. Now buy a tin of peas, a tin of carrots, 4 eggs, 2 onions, 4 rashes of bacon, and any other little bits you personally like.

Now boil up the rice. Fry the eggs and bacon. Dice the onions. Now strain the rice, throw the tinned vegs in, add salt/pepper/soy to taste, throw in the eggs/bacon/onions, etc. Now cook in big old pot. Total cost is about $20AU, cooks enough for 8-10 meals when frozen, easy to reheat in the microwave, and stores very well. Can also be used in part with other meals as a side, or eaten on it's own.

Another good one is chilli, buy some mince (good stuff, can't cheap out on meat) and a few packets of seasoning (we're being lazy here, old el passo is good), a tin or two of refried beans, some onions, tomatoes, some taco sauce and some salsa.

Fry the meat until it's nice and brown, throw in some diced onions and tomatoes, throw in the beans, get it nice and stirred, now add the seasoning, sauce, and salsa. Cook enough it looks right. Now store it. Total cost is about $30AU, tastes great, can be used as sides or main, good on steamed rice. Makes about enough for 8 meals, stores reasonably well.

I've got dozens of other cheap and some good not so cheap stuff that I like to make when I have friends around, if you're interested let me know and I'll post more.

The trick is to set aside a day to cook a heap of food and store it, you'll end up with good healthy home cooked food that costs about $2 a serving if you work it right and do your shopping right.

I think there may be a Helpline on the back of the packet to be honest (Why do they have Help lines on food, really? I see them on Tooth paste tubes and it boggles my brain)

Noodles do beat Patte, but it's an unfair fight really. Noodles have a pasta based god to draw strength from.
Duck patte just gets hateful letters from Dark wing Duck and the cast of Duck tails for being a horrible tasting snack for the duck franchise.
Still, if you ever need a noodely co-snacker call me.

May the Force be with you.

...In case you eat the flavour sachet first? I mean seriously, I can understand if the product is faulty, but I can imagine a caller saying in a really slow voice "Hello, my name is Brian. I tried to make your noodles and I put them in the bowl and it just tasted of packaging... What I do wrong?"

Ah, but of course, through the divination of Pastafarianism.
At least shredded duck in Chinese food makes up for the horrible plans of patte'.
It shall be done, you know what you're talking about!

Hotdogs, mac n cheese with spicy ground meat (or hotdogs), grilled sandwiches (tuna, turkey, pb&j, or roast beef), fettuccine alfredo and other simple but delicious pasta dishes with some kind of meat also, and tandoori chicken with basmati rice (cant deny myself the food of my people)

Mac & Cheese + Green beans was always my favorite inexpensive meal.

But you can never overlook good old Ramen Noodles, or Cup of noodles when you can't seem to find Ramen.

Well it's working and at 6am the local purveyors of Chinese food are not.

So, looks like I'll have to raid Your kitchen.

I would always eat Top Ramen growing up, thought I wouldn't have to worry about liking college food. Now that I'm in college I'm long since sick of noodles.
