There should be one question only.

What is the difference between a hardcore and casual gamer?

Any answer that isn't along the lines of "those are meaningless terms used only to boost an individual's ego or e-penis" results in a big red F being stamped both on the test and the individual's forehead.

How about when you start sweating while playing videogames and having to take breaks, and realizing you havent been to work in a week?

There's no such thing as a hardcore gamer, it's just an old wives tale they use to scare the children.

But in all seriousness I've never enjoyed this ranking of gamers that seems to be so common nowadays, it's fine to classify gamers (Retro gamers, puzzle gamers etc) but when you contrast casual with hardcore you can see what I mean.
Actually, I can't see what you mean, please elaborate...

Edit: Also, what made you jump to the word 'contrast' as opposed to any other word, such as compare? I see the concepts as on a sliding scale or continuum not armies ready for war...Hence my call for peace I suppose.

Casual gaming is just playing video games.

Hardcore gaming is when you get involved with gaming culture (Internet forums, memes, modding communities, competitive gaming) and follow up on game news and such. When gaming is sort of a hobby, then you're a hardcore gamer.

There's your definition.
That's definately not bad at all. However, I feel it lacks the elements of knowledge and appreciation of both the industry and the history of gaming that some might consider a hardcore gamer should possess.

This thread is about resolving the debate, not starting a new, more violent debate. Chill.

BAM! You're not hardcore, unless you live harcore!

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99101-The-Hardcore-Gamers-IQ-Test-Will-Make-You-Feel-Wussy

That about sums it all up.
Is it sad I could actually name more than half of the games/people on that pic.
No, I got around about the same too. It's a fun quiz that separates the men from the boys.
No Kate Walker. That test fails miserably.

Also, VIVA PINATA! TEH HARDCOREZ!
It is very hard to make a test about hard core gamers that does not deal with life style, mostly because a fair amount hard core gamers just focus on one multilayer game so yea they are hard core and will pwn at that game, they spend most of their life playing it, but don't know every detail about every game ever made.

Also, i consider myself a more casual gamer, I spend alot of my life fixing my computer up and playing games, but i play them for the story and rarely go above normal difficulty unless the game was really good and it has coop (like i have beat re5 and DoWII on the hardest setting, but thats about it). I do good in online games, but i dont spend my life on them, i usually play till i have unlocked most everything then quit. I rarely get competitive.
However i still do spend most of my life on a computer, so does that inherently make me a hardcore gamer?
Oh, and i will never own an xbox (and the same is probably true for the PS3 and 96% of Nintendo's ****).

Hardcore gaming is mostly used to make one sound awesome or awefull.

Either you are a hardcore gamer who has no life and whose universe is limited by the sides of the screen. You have no perspective and no gf etc... Basically you are a good parent's nightmare and "normal" people feel a mix of pity and mockery for you.

Or you are a hardcore gamer who plays hard everything. You are a living encyclopedia of gaming and have no time for noobs and casuals. You are that awesome all those losers fail to understand your awesomeness.

I like the subtlety and shades of grey involved in your use of the term Core Gamer. In fact I like it a lot. Indeed, I would probably define myself as a Core Gamer based on your definition.
Why danke, I've been looking to coin my deffinition

However, I'm looking to define Hardcore Gamer in the way one defines World Champion or Dan grade martial artist. There needs to be a test for those who wish to persue it. My feeling is that it will be the only way to end the debate. For example, I play basketball but I'm not a world champion player or an All Star, those titles only go to those who deserve it and have passed various tests...
Ah well that's easy.
Competition, on A variety of different games and genre, Only then do you really get to know whose cream of the crop.
Possibly, I do remember the joyous days of GamesMaster and thinking that there is your expert gamers. But what then for the single player games? How is my performance at Max Payne or Vandal Hearts more or less impressive than another?

The answer is simple, because simplicity is the way.
Does one consider themselves as hardcore gamer? If yes, they are. If no, they are not.
Honestly this is by far the best answer i've read.

Casual gamers likely dont even consider themselves gamers its just something they happen to be doing at the moment, no different than watching TV or a movie.

Personally i would consider the community of The Escapist to be at the very least gamers. Seeking to define yourself as hardcore to set yourself above or better than the majority of the populace who enjoys the same hobby the rest of us is unseemly. Sadly, wanting to conform yourself to a clique of other hardcore gamers is nothing short of snobbery. Then i suppose there are snobs in everything why not gaming too.

For me, i'm to busy having fun blowing shit up too look down my nose at others.

yeah... that's kind of under "following up on gaming news". I don't think you really need to know the "history of gaming" to be a hardcore gamer, this especially applies to the newer generation.
I disagree. Again, re movie buffs, or similar kinds of media experts if you know nothing about the history of the media you have a sorely limited knowledge of the subject. Also true of those who know everything about the history and nothing about the present time.
